Netflix Downloads: Om Chimes In

Our buddy Om Malik has chimed in on all the Netflix movie downloading streaming shenanigans with some pretty intriguing insights. It seems we may have jumped the gun a bit in our immediate praise of the service.
Aside from the equating it to the rabble of players who tried to getting into the music downloading arena, he’s got a nice little list of what Netflix downloads is and isn’t. Namely it isn’t a downloading service because it just streams the video.
Another valid critique is that because it’s attempting to stream DVD-quality video, users need at least a 3Mbps connection. Not an issue for me and you, but for our readers out there with old and busted 1.5Mbps connections, Netflix movies Online might not be as appealing as we were quick to say.

I disagree with Om. When you’re a large player like Netflix, it takes a lot of work to get things in order. Even Apple couldn’t get more than one studio on board for it’s movie download service in the beginning; and that only happened because Jobs is on Disney’s board.
And let’s be real, 3Mbps is perfectly fair. The cable companies are in the midst of upgrading their service and copper wiring anyway. Why build for the lowest common denominator when 1.5Mbps is going to be a thing of the past within the next 12 months.

By the way, I posted that last message (just forgot to fill out my info).
Blake, you have a typo in the article. In the last half of the last sentence where it says “Netflix movies Online might now be as appealing as we were quick to say”, you need to change “now” to “not”.

You also forgot to mention that the Netflix streaming “service” is not compatible with Macintosh systems. Which is totally inexcusable. Macs are gaining market share every day and there is no reason why the platform couldn’t be compatible with it. The minute Apple would offer an unlimited streaming plan for a monthly fee through itunes, I would leave netflix and never look back. DVD’s are soooo ‘00. Why are we even still messing with physical media, there’s no reason we should. DVD’s are a waste of space.
