With the PS3 being the most expensive console out there right now, consumers are probably holding out for a price cut of some sort to make that $600 investment a little more manageable. Hopefully they’re not holding their breath though. SCEA CEO Jack Tretton gives a big, fat “NO.” to those asking if the PS3’s price will drop as quickly as the PS2’s. Apparently, between R&D and the cost per unit, dropping the price just isn’t an option for Sony right now.
Sez Jacko:
“I think the consumers that get their hands on a PlayStation 3 clearly see the value and not only want to buy one for $599, in some instances they’re willing to pay ridiculous prices to buy one on eBay.”
Very true. Plus, just think about how much a standalone Blu-Ray player would set you back. Now that PS3 seems like a bargain, right?
Sony Honcho Negs PS3 Price-Cuts [Kotaku]

With Blu-Ray ‘cracked’ now, the PS3 though still a powerful machine, becomes just a video game console again. I mean, for those that like to borrow their movies online of course.
So even though it’s a cheap Blu-Ray player, if you can watch Blu-Ray movies on your computer now(/soon), what will stop people from getting a cheaper video game console that’s also an hd-dvd player (ala the 360). Even though HD-DVD is cracked now and you’re able to watch HD content on your computer now too, it’s still a cheaper game center compared to the PS3.
If I had the dough though, I’d still like to get a PS3, but I was hoping for that price drop, guess I just have to wait a bit longer eh?
PS3 seems like a colossal scam. The prices of Bluray and HD-DVD players will fall MUCH faster than the PS3. As a standalone Bluray player, the PS3 comes without a remote. You can’t use a universal remote, cause it only works with special Bluetooth models.
Wait, wait, wait. The price will come down once they realize that nobody is buying it. Already PS3s are over stocked in stores. In Japan, Sony’s home country, they are already slashing prices.
I think that’s why they aren’t dropping the prices, because there’s so many in stock from people not buying/returning them. Which makes sense. For each console Sony produces, they lose a couple hundred dollers (I believe), so off the bat they were already losing money. But they hoped to bring in most of their money from games and peripherals. And then once sales were good, they’d probably find cheaper ways to produce the PS3 and then drop the price. But that’s just me. And seeing how sales started out haven’t been that good, they better find that cheaper way a lot sooner.
Keep in mind to watch Blu-Ray on your PC, you’ll need to shell out $600+ for a Blu-Ray drive. As for it being cracked, it’s not cracked enitrely as of now and when it does become cracked, no one feels like downloading 50GB no matter how fast your connection is.
As for the PS3 not coming with a remote, true, but the controllers are wireless.
