a post from CNET’s David Carnoy on Crave, it looks like Sony may have accidentally on purpose sealed the fate of SACD, which it created.
It seems even though the PlayStation 3 has the ability to playback the discs, it falls short in the output department, with no multichannel analog audio connection to handle the multichannel tracks. Carnoy goes on to explain although Sony may someday enable an HDMI out to digitally handle SACD audio, you’d still need an HDMI-equipped A/V receiver to, well, receive it.

You’re forgetting the Optical audio output. I’ve used this type of connector since the early days of the PS2 to play the sound output for my game systems, and all my computers use it now as well. HDMI also supports this already, as far as I know.
Kazriko, according to the story, there’s not enough bandwidth in an optical or coaxial connection to pass a multichannel SACD track.
The article is completley wrong. Guess, in this age of internet everyone can write what they want (and even get paid for it). PS3 can output multichannel SACD through HDMI. Almost all receivers (even el’cheapos)found on the market these days have v 1.2 HDMI or higher. PS3 SACD playback is rock solid. Of course, you cannot expect it to reach quality of dedicated SACD players often costing $3-10 k.
Was David so lazy to check the facts before posting such garbage of an article.

Best thing to do is stay well clear of these sites and stick to the more well known established sites like IGN and Gamespot.
I happen to fall in hear because of Google alerts about PS3 news.
Sorry, I meant to spell ‘hear’ with ‘here’
Zee, Eshef was commenting on the story, which originally appeared on CNET, a very well-known established site that in fact owns GameSpot.
The article is correct, you CAN’T use optical digital connections. I just bought my first SACD to play on my new PS3 with my high end amp (which does not have HDMI connector due to the amp being a couple of years old.)
And… IT DOESNT WORK AT ALL. All I get is a message from the PS3 saying “SACD audio will not play with a digital optical cable, please choose a different option.” What a piece of crap…. the SACD is going back to the retailer, and so, I think, will the PS3. (I bought it for its high-fi capabilities, not for games.)
Sony has totally shot themselves in the foot due to their insistence on lame copyright protection. I was all primed to order a whole bunch of SACDs to play on my new PS3… but because they refuse to let the unencryped signal travel over a digital optical cable… they will never make that sale. Morons.
This is for Jason.
If you wanted to use an optical connection for SACD, this only shows you have no idea of what SACD is.
Obviously it doesn’t work.
you should read a little about what you want to buy.
For the same price of PS3, you can buy dedicated SACD players … Buying a PS3 for Hifi is just … LOL.
YOU KNOW I HOOKED MY NEW 8 TRACK PLAYER to my DAW and the dam thing tells me I/O error WTF? iM taking the player back! those dam rca’s are confusing!
There are very few, if any machines, that can handle Hi-rez formats like DVD-A and SACD via optical. On nearly every universal or SACD machine they have 6 analog outputs to handle the information. DVD-A is exactly the same way.
The reason I ended up on this site is because I did a search for multichannel SACD+PS3. I was hoping Sony issued some sort of 6 analog output to hold me over while I waited for an HDMI 1.3 receiver to hit the market.
BTW The HDMI output is supposed to be very good on SACDs from articles I have read.
what a bunch of crap. NO sacd player will output over optical. the PS3 has always supported the HDMI out for SACD. In fact, it’s one of the best sacd players out there as far as audio quality. And it’s rumored that DSD bitstream output support is planned for a firmware upgrade.
The real problem here is people not researching their purchases!
Better late than never…
As of this month (system software version 2.00) PlayStation3 supports playback of Super Audio CD via optical audio output.
For details see http://www.ps3sacd.com
Yes… but not in it’s true form. The signal is converted into DTS. Anyone knows the difference in quality?
Someone in this thread has written that no SACD player will give the signal through optical or coaxial. But I believe I have seen SACD Marantz players with only THESE connections.. :S Am I wrong?
burrrn
no SACD over optical… you should learn to read mate. optical, I.link and HDMI allow a multitude of variations of signals to pass thru. 5.1DTS, THX, 7.1, DSD… it all depends on how you hook it to your rig and what you are using. PS3 does support SACD but not in true DSD format, it uses DTS and PCM to allow it to work through optical. Most SACD playes and DVD-A players do the same job. A true dedicated SACD player would handle DSD but would start at about £2k.
