Let’s face it. You know Sony kicks ass. You totally had a wet dream back in the 1990s when you saw the PlayStation and when PS2 fever hit, you bum-rushed Target hoping to get one. So why so much hatred for the PS3? Because you’ve been spoiled.
To be quite frank, you need a time out. The previous PlayStation models fit well within your budget and had great launch titles to boot. Now the PS3 comes along and all of a sudden, you realize that you’re going to have to actually put in more than 15 hours a week at Burger King. You shouldn’t have to work more. I mean, the Nintendo Wii costs only $250! Why can’t the PS3 cost $300 with a free sports game?
Because the PS3 isn’t banking on the hopes that you’ll play a game where you drive a damned truck with a TV remote. No, the PS3 has a long future planned out for you. See, the Wii doesn’t output in high-def, it doesn’t come with a Blu-ray player, which alone would run you $500 plus and it doesn’t come with the power the PS3 packs.
When I got a PS3, I realized it didn’t have many good launch titles. In fact, all I wanted was Resistance: Fall of Man and Madden ‘07. Now what about the Wii or Xbox 360? The 360 I have no problems with. It’s the perfect console to buy right now and the console that anyone considering a next-gen system should purchase. But the Wii?
Sure, Zelda is great and all, but guess what: I don’t give a hoo-hoo about Link running through a forest for the 10th time trying to find some treasure or rescue Zelda. I’ve been done with that gaming concept since Ocarina of Time, thank you.
I know what you’re thinking right now. “This Nintendo-hating douche obviously hasn’t played the KILLER titles!” What killer titles would you be referring to? Surely you can’t mean the crap-tastic first-person shooters or the mindless games like Wario Ware or Wii Sports. Wii Sports can be fun, but going outside and playing two-hand touch football or boxing your friends after half a bottle of Jack is much more entertaining.
Back to the PlayStation 3, though. Resistance is a clutch game. Not only is the online play free, but for a launch title, it’s damn good. It reminds me of Halo Online set in a WWII era. And get this: the graphics are killer. Bet you had no idea, right? As for Madden, it’s a great game but it’s just Madden, so whatever. It’s good for when you and your buddies get drunk and want to scream at the TV while waiting for the pizza to get delivered.
I’m basically saying the Wii is a piece and you’re just too much of a fanboy to realize it. The PS3 is clearly the winner in the next-gen console war and it’s only a matter of time before all the good titles like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2 come out and blow your hands off like a two-dollar M80 firecracker. I’ve got Blu-ray, Wi-Fi, wireless controllers that don’t make me look like I’m going into convulsions when I use them, HD output and a 60GB hard drive to store all my porn on. So go ahead and have fun spending countless hours with Zelda. I’m popping some Prozac, calling off work and spending quality time with some real next-gen games. Happy Friday.

The problem with buying the PS3 based on what Sony promises to do with the hardware later, is that historically Sony has overpromised and underdelivered. The PS2 had support for Firewire, a mouse and keyboard, USB, and a hard drive. We were promised –and what became of all that? Zilch, apart from Final Fantasy XI which finally used the hard drive–only to see Sony drop hard drive support from the console immediately.
Like it or not sony has 70% of the console market share that’s just as much as the ipod share of music players.

Well the new Disc formats are both good in their own rights but only for DATA storage. when it comes to Movies, HD downloads will win. $40-$60 for a Blu-ray disc or $10 and a bit of download time to get the same quality resolution???? I have all my DVD collection on my PC and stream it to the TV so recently I’ve had a look at the new disc formats and the other options out there (WMV-HD, Divx HD, Etc.) and at the end of the day it’s ease of use and convenience that will sell the format, after all DVD took off because the space they take up is a fraction of what the VHS cassettes took up.
So IMO, SONY should have stuck with DVD for the time being and released the PS3 with the option to upgrade to the DISC WARS winner (Blu-ray OR HD-DVD). this is where Microsoft has the advantage…. they can back peddle if Blu-ray wins and say ‘Ooops we got it wrong here’s a Blu-ray addon for you 360s’.
As for the motion sensing controllers both, PS3 and Wii may be onto something there and again IF MS want to all they need to do is release an update and a motion sensing controller and there you have it all the features of the PS3 But with a bit more flexibility.
If you think that blu-ray is a waste, then you have not. A) seen it in person against HD-dvd, it puts it to shame! B) dont see the future of games and movie content and the size required to store it all, I mean who wants a 10 disc set of a favorite SEASON dvd or Hd-dvd when you could have it all on 1 blu-ray disc? Jay Wilson, you are not very familiar with the ps3’s capabilities. The blue ray player which is equiped with the ps3 does not only produce stunning movie quality but it also enables the games for ps3 to appear a lot more complex. e.g. you may be playing a first person shooter such as Resistance and you will notice that there is a lot of things happening at once all indiviually, also allows the games to be a lot larger in length and you can forget about games being in a dual disc package with blue-ray each game will be on an individual cd say goodbye to “disc 1 and disc 2″.
I would like to finish by saying to everyone that believes that xbox 360 is superior, that you should really wait about 2 years untill sony has had time to properly work with the technology and produce games that truely harness the power of the console, b4 commenting on which console delivers a better gaming experience.

What if it fails & it will probably be shifted out in the future, because it’s too new & doesn’t conform to all the BD specs, so yes, newer movies will probably not work right. Also, a stand-alone player will probably offer better quality and functions and less buggy than the PS3 player. I’m serious here. And what if some movies never hit the Blu-eay and goes HD-DVD instead?

I can’t believe people are saying that the 360 has better graphics for less money than the ps3. Since when do consoles maximize the graphics within like 3 months?
If you compare the launch titles of both, the 360 isnt even close of having ps3’s graphics. I mean try to compare perfect dark zero and resistance and PGR3 and Motorstorm (yeah ok it’s only been released in Japan but still)
I like the 360, but most people who support it are like “OMG GEARS OF WAR” (which is an excellent and awesome looking game btw) but it took a long while before it was released. Personally i think it’s comparable to Resistance graphic-wise. The both have incredible graphics. OK GOW has better colors,an “action cam” that makes it look a bit better and i like the gore style of the game. On the other hand resistance has good physics, awesome weapons that makes (in my opinion) one of the best online multiplayer FPS on all consoles.
I also see every sony haters say that the PS3 is wayyyy to expensive. Well, if you’ve suscribed to Xbox Live, it’s a matter of time before you end up paying more than the PS3 costs. And don’t tell me bullshit about the ps3 online store, it had more stuff than the xbox had at the same time after their releases. And one doesn’t cost a penny.
Bottom line is that those 2 consoles are having a war between each other and it can only mean better games. But i think sony will win the war because of superior hardware and i am sure that they will suprise a LOT of people in the future.
It’s quite ironic that the best the Wii60 fanboys can come up with is: they’re making you buy technology you don’t need yet (Blu-Ray) & X360 games look just as good (if not better than some launch titles).
Both are true but I didn’t hear any xbots complain when the 360 came out and the initial Xbox was just left to die. So they actually forced the new console or not: doesn’t matter if you want it, but if you’re with MS then you have to spend 400b bucks! And I won’t even start on how the new Vista OS is making all others obsolete, yet again forcing itsself on you.
About why some X360 games play/look better: 1st generation PS3> 2nd generation X360. What did you expect? Just because the PS3 has the most potential that the launch games were all gonna look as stunning as Gears Of War? Heck no, but X360 launch games looked like utter crap (no exceptions) so Sony’s not doing too bad on that department. Just wait a year and THEN try comparing the graphics between the 2.
There’s a lot of other negativity about the PS3 that is really uncalled for. The worse of all are the idiots who claim the X360 or Wii have won the console war. Hell no! The world consists out of more parts than just the US, you know. And as history shows, Europe is the place where PS has made it’s greatest successes and also (eventually) sold the most of each of their consoles. So don’t be writing it off just yet!
Naturally a lot of Wii60 fanboys are going to think I’m totally biased – a sony fanboy. Wrong! I have friends with both the 360 and Wii and have played & enjoyed them both. But it’s nothing that can captivate me indefinitely. I’m sure as hell not gonna be one of the idiots that stands in line for the European launch. I’ll probably wait ’till there’s a price drop (400-450€ is a decent price) and then buy it. PS3 should also have a few good games out by then.
And one last thing: everyone is so thrilled to be able to say:”sony got too cocky, they’ll loose on their market share”. So? They’re still making money with the PS2, PSP and other electronic departments so it’s not that if they don’t have 60-70% of the market, they’ll go down for good. All that will happen is prices will come down quicker and games will also be less expensive (PS2 had the most expensive games – of X1, GC & PS2 – from it’s launch up to now, because it was the market leader and thus could afford it). They’ll actually be forced to be more consumer friendly, which will in turn draw a lot of people back, who were initially put of by the PS3’s high price.
As a future PS3 owner I’m looking ahead to good times!

I work in the tech field, so I’ve been hands-on with the Blu-Ray for a little while now. It looks good, but you know what? As someone who just wants to play games, I shouldn’t have to swallow the cost of a Blu-Ray player. Sony should’ve given people an option, but of course, they’re attempting to force its format into our entertainment centers.
The other benefits that you mentioned – longer game lengths, a single disc instead of multiple, etc. – mean nothing for the types of games I play. Titles requiring 20,30, 40 hours to finish isn’t a game that I’d want to play anyway. No time.

Pauly, you are wrong on so many levels. First of all, independent game sites are stating the 360 has equal or better graphics and gameplay than the PS3. I posted a link above but here it is again. http://www.gamespot.com/features/6162742/index.html (also I like your ‘industry’ quote, have a source or link??). And PS3 developers have had their SDKs for as long as 360 developers, so don’t think this is because the 360 has been out a year longer. PS3 graphics will look better in 2 years, but so will the 360s. As for BluRay, I will say it again, it is not necessary for a game system. Even PC games use DVDs and those have better graphics and depth than console games. I would rather use 2, even 3 DVDs over a media format that isn’t around in 5 years.
So for high-def movies, yes BluRay is nice, but for a game system you’re wasting your money. Bethesda developers have even said BluRay hurts them because of its slower load time. They have had to duplicate data to help. So apparently Sony needs BluRay’s extra strorage just to compensate for its slow load time: http://gaming.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=7715.
So if you wanted next-gen gaming, it arrived last year with the 360. The PS3 offers nothing over it in gaming, don’t take my word for it, follow the links I posted. Sorry Sony tricked you. But in that case you’re probably a few years too early, and hopefully BluRay will win or you can lay your BluRay movies next to your Betamax movies. DVDs are fine for me until high-def players come out at reasonable costs and movies aren’t 30% more than DVDs – say in 2,3, or 4 years. Either way Sony screwed you. But you just keep waiting another two years like you said. I’ll be enjoying my 360 (and a damn Wii, if I can ever find one…).
P.S. To blu-ray. I don’t care, sorry. I have seen high-def movies and they are very nice. But not a huge deal to me, DVDs play great on my big-screen HDTV. When the price drops and the next-gen movie format clears up, I’ll get one. But it’s not necessary now, regardless of how Sony has stupidly tried to force the issue.

Actually, Blu-Ray is going to lose the high-def battle. Almost certainly. The only thing you’re PS3 is equipped with is at least $200 worth of equipment that will be useless in 2 years.
Also, no one’s buying the PS3. It’s not the “clear winner of the next-gen war” because its sales are tanking and no one cares enough about Sony brand loyalty to slap down $600.
I mean, $600 for Resistance? Resistance is good, but it’s not nearly up to par with Gears of War. In fact, Resistance is just an OK launch title that will be completely trampled by the great shooters coming out in the future.
And I think calling WarioWare “mindless” is just trying really, really hard to make it sound like no one cares about Nintendo. The truth is that WarioWare is better than any of the crap the PS3 is going to get within the next few months.
Regardless, in a few years Sony will have traveled the way of Sega and won’t be in the console market any more. You won’t love your PS3 so much any more because 3rd-party devs will have jumped ship, Blu-Ray will have fallen and the Cell will be masked by the wonderful world of DX10.

With that said i still believe that within two years time the games to be brought out by sony on the ps3 will be superior than those on 360. Sony will have the time to harness the sheer mindblowing power of the ps3 and work with unleashing the talent of the new state of the art RSX GPu by Nivdia.
Also do not forget that Sony has already began planning and possibly the early stages of creating the PLAYSTATION 4 which is apparently going to be released in ten years time considering that each console is given ten years before something is created to overshadow it. Although mind you in ten years time the graphics of the ps3 will be a lot better than what we are seeing today, it was the same deal with the ps2. When the ps2 was released the launch titles if anyone can still remember them differed greatly to titles recent titles such as Gran Turismo 4 in graphical content.
Great article. Unlike websites like gamespot that run biased gamers around in circles and feature their direction less and blind arguments like creditable facts, this is straight forward, to the point and backed by a clear mind. I hate gamespot, I’ll be visiting this site more often.
Off all the people who have posted here…how many of you guys/gals actually own a PS3..?? huh…?? I bet most of you are simply reading different articles and simply mentioning somebody else’s point of view. If you think 360 is better then go buy it…if you think the Wii is better then please be by guest and go for it…heck…I’ll even in stand in line at BestBuy at 3:00 AM to help you get one. But speaking for myself, I found the PS3 to offer the best features. If I keep on getting solid titles to play around with (and rent occasional BD movies)…then I am happy. Its a free world people…live and let live.
BTW..I have one more thing to mention.
How many of us spent a lot of $$$ building that super cool computers of ours…which in about 2 years has lost 75 % of its initial value ..?? Well..?? If you are spending on hi-tech products then chill…cuz they are going loose value anyway. Lets live in the present and stop speculating about the distinct future. I own a PS3 60G and am totally enjoying it !!!

If you hate GS just because they disagree with this guy or give the PS3 bad press, that’s because this guy is very disagreeable and there’s a lot of bad press that the PS3 deserves. Like its almost completely unwarranted $600 pricepoint. If it weren’t for Resistance, the PS3 would be completely useless until MotorStorm comes out and everyone here knows it.
It’s OK for him to have his opinion, but Vince is a moron if he thinks that there’s absolutely no controversy to the quality of the PS3.
