the only reason apples product is such a hit is because it was the only thing of its kind at the time, it had a monopoly on the large hard drive mp3 players. and the reason ipod chargers are making more than zunes is beacuse stupid apple has to make everything onl fit there system and price it rediculously high! it like 40 for an ipod chaarger! it doesnt even come with one in the box!

Apple has an IPOD to help them get back on track, since the MAC System is just like Netware up to what now version 7.x? If you want an IPOD and follow Apple then do it, but for me I am sticking with Microsoft and already have a Zune and another one on the way.

Do not think that Apple can hold the market because you see some people with a well overpriced IPOD and a glass store? when most have everything from MP3 Players to MEdia Players dong the same thing for half the price.

Article was stupid and immature and give them time and Zune name will be more popular than Apple could have even imagined. Now go talk to the old man Mr. Jobs now...please give me a frigging break.

I have to agree with G8TR. The zune is nothing more then an attempt to copy the ipod. I was shocked that M$ would abanded its plays for sure after it had pushed it so hard. That pissed off allot of makers and exactly why best buy joined up with sandisk and real to do there version of the ipod/itunes.
I can quote a million reasons why apple is a better company and makes better products then M$. I will admit the desgning of the xbox360 is nice it looks very pleasing to the eye. The original xbox was crapy looking. The thing still remains the zune is competing in a whole different areana then the xbox360 is.

Its going to be very difficult to do anything to the ipod. The ipod is cool and the nano is even better if you dont want video. The mini was the biggest mp3 seller ever and the reason being not everyone wants video not everyone wants to put photos to show off on thier mp3 player. Some just want it do play music and the fact that i can still have so many 3rd party accessories and it can still do a calender, be a portable HD and more.

The itunes interface is so easy to use and it manages your music on your hard drive not on the web. That is a big plus.
The zune is not only competing against the ipod its competing against all ther plays for sure players and every other MP3 player on the market. WHich is alot and with the xbox there was only sony and nintendo.

The problem with M$ is they dont know how to inovate they dont know how to make something just work. sure Apple doesnt have 90% of the OS market and they dont make gaming boxes but the ipod kicks butt. It may not have an FM radio it doesnt have WIFI but what it has is a constant set of rules. It just works period no ifs ands or butts about it.

Zune will never accomplish this ever. MS cant even do it with thier OS.

What truly makes a great user interface is an ineffable internal logic, a set of consistent internal rules that one absorbs without their having to be stated..."
Apple understand the "interface" between the user and the computer interface, because they understand and have attained the 'Ness.
This goes for not only the OS in the computer but the OS in the new iphone the ipod. If you can use one you can use the other.

M$ and no one else has figured this out. ITs simple logic but yet they dont get it.
I think M$ got lucky with the Xbox360 On the other hand zunes sit on shelves and no one wants one. They will never be APple nor will M$ zune ever be the ipod. It just wont happen.

I like the all you can eat music style.
The player is as good as any ipod.
Thats why I plan to purchase a zune within the next month.
Untill then, I'm quite happy with the 15 bucks a month I pay to microsoft as a opposed to the hundreds of dollars I would have to fork over to Apple for the same muisc.

These are the biggest problems with the Zune (in my opinion).

•The Zune is a re-branded Toshiba Gigabit player that is thicker, heavier-looking and blockier than an ipod.
•The wheel at the bottom isn't touch sensitive like the patented ipod scroll wheel.
•The Zune is incompatible with songs purchased from iTunes (where over 75% of digital music is purchased)
•The Zune is also incompatible with all other music stores using MS PlaysForSure DRM (ironic that Microsoft doesn't even support the format they previously endorsed and licensed to third-parties like Napster, MSN Music, Urge, etc).
•You have to purchase Zune content using MS Points. In an attempt to confuse the consumer, Microsoft sells 80 points for $1. Therefore, you think you are getting .79 songs when you are actually paying $1. You also have to purchase 400 or 800 points at a time instead of buying exactly what you want, when you want like iTunes.
•The Zune doesn't support Podcasts.
•The screen is larger but the resolution is the same as the ipod’s.
•Construction is inferior and all plastic unlike the ipod's aluminum back shell (which can be engraved for FREE and shipped for FREE if purchased from apple.com).
•Microsoft's DRM isn't as lenient as Apple's.
•Shared music on the Zune can only be played 3 times or 3 days (whatever comes first) before it disappears.
•Microsoft doesn’t inform you which purchased songs are available to transfer before you buy. Many songs, such as anything from The Rolling Stones and other top artists, can’t be transferred at all.
•The Zune software (also called Zune) doesn't manage your music and sync it to your player as seemlessly as iTunes software and I don't think you can use it as a portable HD (correct me if I'm wrong).
•Microsoft sets a bad precedant by giving a portion of Zune revenue to Universal Music in a desperate bid to gain influence over the record labels. If the Zune succeeds, every label will want a cut and consumers will pay higher prices for the "privilege" of playing their music on your device. The labels will also get variable pricing (higher pricing for new music) that Steve jobs refused for iTunes.
•The Zune only has a few third-party accessories whereas the ipod has thousands of accessories available, including cases, docks and even a Nike sports kit that wirelessly tracks data from your run and transmits it to your ipod Nano.
•The Zune is made by Microsoft. That about says it all. Microsoft doesn't even have the guts to put it's name on the product because of their bad reputation. They shamelessly copy everything that Apple does right down to a cute little greeting on the back of their player.

I seriously don't see how Microsoft can compete when consumers are informed. I believe they rely solely on their entrenched customer base and deep pockets to even be sucessful in the software business. I will say that the xBox 360 is a great gaming console though.

There is a difference in the xbox vs the zune. When the Xbox came out there were only 2 players nintendo Gameboy and Sony PS2. both are great depnding on what you like to do. Nintendo has always pushed themselves as the more family oreinted. They also has the top selling portable till sony PSP but even now the nintendo DS is a hot seller. Anyway when Xbox came out it didnt sell well at first. It stil is no where near the PS2. yea it beat the gamecube out but the gamecube didnt play DVDs either and at the time it was released that was a big thing to have a DVD player in your system. NOw the PS3 comes out its going well. The nintendo Wii is going like crazy. Its not the best graphics its not the fastest processor but its cool it is fun. I have a friend who has xbox360 PS3 and gamecube and wii. he says the Wii is so much fun and so interactive you cant put it down. he says for ultimate graphics geeks they may not like it because some of the people dont look real but he says its a matter of fun. PLsu with Wii you can download all of nintendos history and go play old games. PS3 has the blu-ray drive in it making it good. I think its over priced a bit but like everything else it will come down. I have to admit Xbox 360 looks like something apple would make. But MS learned from thier xbox mistakes. Its still not the greatest and still has its problems.

Anyway sure the xbox sold allot and xbox 360 more. BUt when the 260 came out there was no other next gen gaming system yet. they were first and lots of people are early adopters. They are only competeing with 2 other companies and they will never outsell the PS3. sony has kept one thing right you can use all your old games. mS failed on that point.

In the world of ipod vs zune. When the ipod came out it did not lose money infact it sold like crazy. Then itunes store came out and it sold even more. There was not allot of other players in the market at the time the ipod came out. Plus nothing at all like the all in one interface and simplicty of the ipod and itunes. (by the way i have an ipod and i dont have any drm on it. all you do is buy cds and then import then to you ipod. Or buy thing from itunes and burn it then make it an mp3 and put it on your ipod boom no more DRM. But my point is the Zune is a left over toshiba gigabeat that has zune software on it. It doesnt sell and its not going to there are way to many other players out there. Plus all the ones MS pissed off by making the zune and dropping them. I love the ipod i dont care if it has cool backgrounds i never look at it excpet when changing songs. I go for style and ease of use. My ipod is easy i just plug it in and it works always. look at the new ipod shuffle its so cool it just clips on. When the first shuffle came out everyone said it would fail people wanted screens to look at but it didnt and now the new ipod shuffles are selling great. MS has not only ipod but the best buy/sandisk/ to compete with and personally the sandisk looks better then the zune by far. Creative has several players and so do many other companies. When the ipod came out it was differnt it was unique and it took off. the zune is unique too i dont know of any other poop colored players but other then that its not that great. Who cares about sharing via wifi or an FM radio. If i wanted to listen to the radio i wouldnt be buying an ipod. I want a place to store and play my music and pictures. The iphone is awesome and when apple does something like that with an ipod it will shake the earth.

Apple is a great company and for your info the intel switch was an upgrade not downgrade. Intel chips have become faster and comsume less power per watt used. They are smaller and lighter (good for laptops) And intel can do things for apple IBM would not. Apple was a small part to IBM and they did not spend the time developing the chips Apple needed. Intel is fat up with MS for going to AMD and they know APple has a great product and are more willing to work with Apple and develope chips and so forth and spend the extra work to make apple happy that IBM would not do.

Quacky, You got a problem with Murricans? They have computers, go on the internet and read forums too. Probably, like many consumers, haven't found a compelling reason to buy a Zune. What are you doing shopping in a dusty old Murrican retailer anyways? Your comments were ignorant.

Hey guys, lets just take a break on the hating. It gets to be a pain after a while.

Buy what you like and enjoy it. Trying to put down the other companies just makes everyone look dumb. Problems with equipment is good info for someone looking to buy, but "J just hate apple cause they are the more popular" sounds dumb from someone buying a PC cause they are more popular. :-)

Microsoft is very big and entrenched. They have an almost captive market. If anyone kills Microsoft, it will be Microsoft. IBM owned the computer world and then came out with the IBM PC. It took IBM to kill the IBM PC so bad that they had to sell it to Lenovo.

So, kids, be nice and play together well. LOPL

Chris,
You say this is how market introductions work....the second generation will be better.
Wrong. This is how poor market introductions work. The first iPod was miles ahead of the competition and the OS and iTunes software that came with it were best in class. That's how it's done right and that is why iPod has 75% of the market and Zune has less than 2%.
A second half-assed Zune effort and the whole Zune brand will be history.

Dear Mr 'FA';
Hello. I'm a pro photographer.
ALL my 80Gb iPod can do is play my songs (2631)
and my podcasts (83)
and my videos (32)
and my movies (12)
and my audiobooks (4)
and my tv shows (3)
and keeps my calendars handy (2)
and lets me play simple games (3)
and stores and displays photos from the last weeks shoots (1600)
and is an external hard drive to store backup client wedding photos (1200)
and keeps a thousand peoples' phone numbers handy
and lets me set a stopwatch timer or a wake up alarm
AND it is not yet two thirds full.
It fits in my pocket, lasts all day, has a screen too bright for night viewing and makes my $30 noise canceling headphones look cool.
Now if only Apple made a phone.
Hold on...

"But, do you know what the loss was for XBox in 2002? I don’t have any official figures, but analysts have publically estimated about $750m. I don’t know if that figure is accurate, but I do know we did not post a profit on it. Now it’s the market leader."

No, the XBox360 is still sold at a loss, and the Zune is sold at a loss too. The $289m loss is from the Zune/XBox division from Microsoft's latest accounts, as reported last week.

Microsoft confirmed last year that the Zune was being sold at a loss. They confirmed last week that the XBox is still sold at a loss. They hope the division will be profitable by 2008 or 2009, they claim. This isn't speculation, but factual statements from Microsoft.

If you really one, you should buy it at ebay. Tons and tons of people selling it. Just like rats trying to get to higher ground on a sinking ship.

Mel you are sadly a tool. I cannot believe i actually read that hog wash. If you even had a clue about apple you would know that Intel is more of a downgrade from their previous provider which was motorolla as well as microsoft has the xbox360 which was not ground breaking like the ps3 but it is slaughtering it and is definitely ground shaking.

The whole rise of apple has been contributed mainly by the ipod though there was an event long ago that had similar results and that was the imac. People went goo goo and gaga over the imacs and they started taking place in most classrooms and buildings then after sometime the raving finally ran out. Same speculatory responses as well as anti-MS speech is going on as it was back then.

Apple is just a lifestyle sort of thing which is their pitch. It seems to be some sort of revolution since people tend to not think for themselves and need leaders of companies to tell them what they need. Then let people who bash products be the 2nd decider for them.

Now if only creative had good tech support... they would be above everyone since the zen vision m > all
