CNN Calls Gates Out On Vista’s Design

Sometimes you gotta face the music, Billy boy. You know damn well you copied a lot of features from OS X when designing Vista and now CNN is calling you out. Watch this video to see Gates get called out on his own game and go “no no no” as a rebuttal.

But according to Gates, Vista has revolutionary features like support for tablet PCs and parental controls.

Parental controls? Wow! I totally have to run out and buy Vista now if not for the parental controls, then perhaps for the networking utilities. You got called out Gates. Man up and deal with it.

“Man up and deal with it” … ??? Are you serious? Are you auditioning for a gig on ESPN?

People, come on. Buy it if you want it. Don’t if you don’t. Period. Free market - free choice. I’m just happy we don’t have an economy that CNN would prefer where the government chooses everything for us little helpless folk.

Grow up everyone. Grow up.

Worst rebutle ever. Was it me or did Gates bring up a laundry list of functions that Apple has been doing for yeard (except parental controls). But honestly, who is going to be sold on a new OS because of parental controls?

Here’s the question…does it really matter? I think it is pretty obvious, the similarities between Vista and OSX, and I would venture to say it’s fairly certain Vista “borrowed” quite a few design and functionality elements. At the end of the day though…who cares?

Both Apple and Microsoft take ideas from each other and move them in their own direction..its the nature of the marketplace. It’s called benchmarking.

For example, Apple’s upcoming Leopard will offer Time Machine for data backup utilities, something long missing from the Mac OS while Windows has had System Restore for years. Of course, Apple is making the process much simpler and aesthetic for their audience. In this particular interview, the commentator seems to be referencing the similarities between OS X’s Finder and Vista’s Explorer. While there are similarities to the look and feel, Vista offers significantly more information (meta data) about a particular file integrated into the current window while OS X requires opening the “Get Info” and sometimes additional steps. Previewing is better on Vista as well with the enlarged rollovers. As to the parental controls..it’s not important to me but if I was a parent and had seen a couple episodes of Dateline’s “To Catch A Predator” series, I think parental controls would be a much higher priority for my computer purchase.

This whole OS war is just counterproductive and rather ridiculous. You never see a post or news story about Toyota “stealing” ideas from Volvo when they start adding side airbags to their vehicle line-up or Crest toothpaste’s flavor and packaging is ripoff of Colgate’s. I believe that we early adopters and active participants in technology must be above this trifledom. We should be evaluating a product or service on whether its good/bad, does it bring value, and does it work.

BOTH OSs copied Xerox in the beginning, what we see now is simply a progression in technology and features, it makes sense that both are now where they are. Nothing more. Nothing less. Sure there is some similarities but to be honest, just because different species of trees share green leaves doesn’t mean they copied one another ;-)

Yeah, first time Parental Controls have been done…Well, except for the fact they’ve been in OS X Tiger since April of 2005…Other than that, yeah Bill, it’s the “first time it’s been done.”

Guys, all of them steel from each other in some way … Yea there are some features in Vista that look like those in OSX but then - when Apple is working on an OS, you pretty much don’t get to see, hear or even think about what it’s gonna incorporate in the next release.

With Windows it’s different. We all get to see it and follow it through from the day One - I used the Longhorn Alpha version…

If you still think that Vista stole a lot, just check out the Longhorn Concept Video from around 2003 or so …. You’ll be amazed what were all of the things Apple actually got from there ;)

All in all - it does not really matter! What matters is that both packs get the best OS possible which makes them more productive and makes them want to work in it.

Cheers,
Petar
