Hot Jugz Personal Shower
4 Comments
by Vince Veneziani on January 30, 2007

Believe it or not, Hot Jugz is not the name of a porn star from 1983.

It’s a personal outdoor shower. It’s comprised of a two-gallon container that can keep your hot water warm and has a shower wand for helping dirty people get clean. It requires no power and can go for sixteen minutes with just a few pumps on the container. There’s a bunch of different models available and you can even get one made with your own personal logo on the device.

Anyone who goes camping, to the beach, or landfills will surely benefit from Hot Jugz and its incredibly sexual name. They retail for $49.99 and up and they’re called Hot Jugz.

Anthrax Guitarist Can’t Play His Own Song In GH2

by Vince Veneziani on January 30, 2007

Meet Scott Ian. You either remember him from the band Anthrax like I do, or you’ve at least seen him doing bits on VH1. Either way, he’s a guitarist and a good one to boot, but when Scotty goes to play an Anthrax song in Guitar Hero 2, things fall apart quickly. It goes to show that you may be able to shred in reality, but the world of video game music-making is a completely different story.

Belkin Wi-Fi Phone For Skype

by Josh Goldman on January 30, 2007

I’m a little late to the pleasures of Skype-ing, but Belkin was kind enough to loan CrunchGear one of its Wi-Fi phones to use with the service. Setup was easy, just connect to a network (it tells you if there’s an open one to connect to or you can type in an SSID and password for a secured one) and then punch in your Skype account info and you’re done. It loads up your contacts and that’s that. It’s so very nice when things just work right out of the box, and this phone does.

We’ll have a full review soon, but for now, here’s some video.

Geek Proposes Via Dashboard Widget

by Vince Veneziani on January 30, 2007

Some would call this a story of love between two geeks. Apparently, some dork who goes by the username “Bjorn” on Flickr proposed to his girl by coding out a custom Dashboard widget. Shaped like a ring box, the widget has an image of a diamond engagement ring and the message “Jennifer Christensen Will You marry me?” He told her to hit F12 and the rest is history.

Awwww. Who says geek romance is dead. I wonder where the reception is being held – Fry’s or Circuit City?

slightly embarrassing turn on the Daily Show, Bill and Steve finally pushed Windows Vista out onto the world. As I write these words her majesty, the Vista, is installing herself on my PC, grinding away at my RAID like a champ.

Twinhead Durabook Rugged Notebooks
1 Comment
by Blake Robinson on January 30, 2007

As a person who is admittedly more than a little clumsy, I’ve always been intrigued by these rugged notebooks. I’ve tripped over the power cord of my Powerbook, sending it sailing across the room more times than I can count (the thing is dented to hell now). It performs noticeably less than adequate now as a result.

Twinhead Corporation is releasing two notebooks that could resolve this disaster in the future. The D13Ry and D14RY feature magnesium-alloy cases that are 20 times stronger than ABS plastic. They also feature an anti-shock mountain design that protects the LCD and hard drive from damage and data loss during falls.

Its spill-resistant design insulates the keyboard, touchpad and adjacent buttons from spills leaking into its sensitive underbelly. Additionally, double protection smart battery circuitry prevents damage caused by current or voltage surges and overheating, while Twinhead’s Smart Battery Calibration helps fight the loss of battery capacity after repeated charge-discharge cycles.

And these systems can perform. Each of the systems feature an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, WiFi and are Vista ready. The D13RY is a mobile multimedia center with a 13.3-inch WXGA display 1.3-megapixel webcam and four 1-watt speakers. While the D14Ry features a non-flare 14.1-inch display.

The D14RY is available now and the D13RY will be “available soon.” More information can be found at Twinhead.

Samsung L74 Wide
by Blake Robinson on January 30, 2007

Samsung’s camera division has been busy lately. Yesterday we saw the NV11 and the i7, today we’ve got the L74 Wide. This 7-megapixel camera is equipped with a 3.6x optical zoom on its 28mm wide-angle lens. It features a 3-inch touchscreen LCD through which most device functions are controlled.

Like other new Samsung cameras, it features face recognition AF and AE. It also has Samsung’s fancy ASR image stabilization, which should help with higher ISOs.

Apple Finally Releases 802.11n Enabler

by Vince Veneziani on January 30, 2007

A while back, we reported that Apple would be releasing an 802.11n enabler as a software download for $1.99. Sure enough, look what has showed up on Apple’s website. The download allows for you to unlock 802.11n wireless capabilities in the following Macs:

• MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo
• MacBook with Intel Core 2 Duo
• Mac Pro with AirPort Extreme option
• iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo (except the 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)

Apple notes however, that if you buy the new Airport Extreme Base Station with 802.11n, the enabler is already included in the box. So don’t buy that enabler just yet, cheetah pants – you may be able to save two bucks and buy some Pringles to eat while you download torrents at blazing fast speeds.

Bill Gates on The Daily Show Humping for Vista
3 Comments
by Matt Hickey on January 30, 2007

You don’t need any silly blogger to convince you that Vista is by and far the best Windows operating system yet. No, you need Microsoft’s chairman Bill Gates, who sat down last night with the Daily Show’s John Stewart for quite awhile and discussed the OS, as well as password protection and that pesky F12 key.

It appears as if the Daily Show’s crew went all-out for the chairman’s visit, as the Vista logo is every-freakin’-where on the set. If the charming Microsoft boss doesn’t make you want to get Vista, we don’t know what will. Catch Part 2 after the jump.

The Mac Basement Collection

by Blake Robinson on January 30, 2007

Well this is about the darndest thing I’ve ever seen. In our scouring, we uncovered a Flickr photoset of a person who has seemingly every Apple Macintosh device ever made in an elaborate basement setup. You name it and this person seems to have it.

I think the real question is, who has the money to do something like this?

People with more money than me, clearly.

Meet D.A.V.E., Our Friend From Seagate
1 Comment
by Vince Veneziani on January 30, 2007

While D.A.V.E. isn’t the most clever acronym in town (it stands for Digital Audio-Video Experience), it looks to be a promising gadget thanks to its slim design and features. Seagate’s D.A.V.E. is basically a small, 20GB hard disk with Bluetooth and WiFi built right into the device. You can transfer files to and fro without the need for a PC, making it perfect for consumers who need more storage on their cellphones or other enabled devices.

The best part? It supposed to cost under $200. No word yet on when it’s going to hit the market, but we’ll definitely be sure to keep an eye on this gem.

Raise Hell With A GPS/GSM Jammer From DetectNu

by Vince Veneziani on January 30, 2007

Aside from a traffic light changer/MIRT, a GSM/GPS jammer is second on my list of devices I should own, but don’t because I’m trying my hardest not to be a jerk. However, if I ever do feel like being a bit of a devious bastard, I can order this GSM/GPS Jammer from DetectNu, maker of radical spy gear.

The device plugs right into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter for mobile power and is designed to block all GSM and GPS signals in the surrounding area. According to DetectNu, this is for the ultra-paranoid who think they’re being tracked via GSM and GPS. No word on pricing but it’s available through DetectNu directly.

Apple Poops Out Multicolored iPod Shuffles

by Vince Veneziani on January 30, 2007

Damn you Apple. You sure do like to tease us, eh? You take down your entire online store to get us all wound up then drop a big pile of colored iPod Shuffles on us while you laugh and call us girly names. You can now scoop up a Shuffle in pink, orange, lime, blue, and silver – similar to the original iMac colors and all are available to buy right now.

But why no previous announcement about the $79, 1GB MP3 player? According to some (Josh mostly), the covert release was in response to Microsoft’s recent release of Windows Vista. We doubt it, but what do you think? Coincidence or response to Vista?

Free, Steamy T-Mobile HotSpot Access
2 Comments
by Vince Veneziani on January 30, 2007

I’m sure a handful of you hooligans have been inside a Borders or Starbucks and have seen that “T-Mobile” wireless network lying low. Truth be told, the T-Mobile HotSpots around the country are great ways to connect to the Internet, but they’re also a little pricey for the casual user.

So this brings us to Microsoft Vista. Vista users who connect to a T-Mobile HotSpot can receive three months of free, unadulterated, steamy access. Everyone else however (XP, 2000, Linux, OS X), is getting the shaft – until now. Use the following user agent switching process in Firefox and within minutes, you’ll be surfing the Internet at no cost to you.

Winos Rejoice! Alcohol From Your Rice Cooker!

by Vince Veneziani on January 30, 2007

As one of CrunchGear’s many resident alcoholics, I feel it is my duty to present to you the following DIY contraption. It seems some lovely gentleman was able to rig a rice cooker and a plastic garbage bag together so that he could produce a rice-based cooking wine. The article explains in great detail what you’ll have to do to in order to get a speakeasy up and running in your domain. So remember kids: should you become bored one day, you can whip your father up a cheap and easy Father’s Day present with a little creativity and a whole lot of rice cookin’.
