The War Is Over: Blu-ray Outselling HD DVD
by Vince Veneziani on February 1, 2007

I’m a man of some intelligence and I certainly know when a silly electronics war is over. So when I read up on these stats regarding Blu-ray and HD DVD sales, I knew the format war was won. As an avid fan of the color blue for the past 15 years, I had a hunch Blu-ray was going to win hands down. I mean, HD DVD doesn’t even have a color in it’s name. How are you supposed to distinguish between the two? In America, we have red, white, and blue—not red, white, and HD DVD.

According to Niesen VideoScan, Blu-ray was gaining on HD DVD throughout 2006. For every 92 Blu-ray discs sold, 100 HD DVD discs found their way into homes, putting Blu-ray behind, but barely.

Now that we’re in 2007, Blu-ray has caught up to the “other” format and is now outselling HD DVD more than 2 to 1. The reason why? Obviously, the greatest console ever, the Playstation 3. Not only did Sony play a crucial role in giving Blu-ray a boost, but they did it at an affordable price. Sure Microsoft’s Xbox 360 might have that silly HD DVD add-on, but who wants to drop $200 on a plastic enclosure that sits outside your console? Not a sane person, that’s for sure.

Lastly, there are also the films. Titles like Saw II and Open Season probably should have tied each other for “Best Picture” at the Oscars, but for now, I’ll let it slide. With groundbreaking titles like these, it’s no wonder why Sony’s Blu-ray has pulled ahead so far while leaving HD DVD in the dust. I mean, just look at the competitor’s titles! Brokeback Mountain? Liar Liar? I suppose if you’re into playing games of naked Twister with Jim Carey on your TV, HD DVD gets the job done just fine. As for me, I don’t settle for “just fine,” so I’ll see you and your PS3 at the local Movie Mart while I pick up some new Blu-ray discs.

  • I’m still rooting for hd-dvd. Cooler name. Colors start gang wars.

PS3 the greatest console ever? Pass that dutchie over here…don’t worry it’ll come back 360…hehe…

    Hmm, I feel dirty now.

Vince, what are you smoking and how much did Sony pay you to write this fake article? I know i will never read another article posted by you anymore. You say the PS3 is the greatest console ever!!!!!! LOL Can you walk into any store and buy a PS3? YEP. Can you walk into any store and buy a WII? Nope. People are still selling WII’s on ebay and making money. People are losing money when trying to sell PS3’s. PS3 is the another beta max.

  • This is not a new article. Was the war over when HD DVD outsold Blu Ray? No. It’ll be back and forth for a while. Demand for PS3 is drying up. When they’ve sold all they can sell, HD DVD will be on top. Then they’ll drop the price of the PS3 and Blu Ray will be on top again. It’ll be a cycle.

  • I agree that the PS3 is the greatest console ever built. I’ve owned many consoles in the past and PS3 is the most impressive. It is true that BD is outselling HD, it happen since December. It’s only going to get better and better because of the content that is being release on Blu-ray only.

  • vince_smokes_crack,

I believe you’re mistaken. This article has a bit of sarcasm included and I actually prefer Methamphetamines!

    Lotsa Love,
    VV

  • I think HDDVD is going to win now that BluRay won’t allow adult content. We’ll revisit this post in 2 years :)

  • You’ve got to be kidding. Saw 2 & Open Season are the titles you are refering to as a good title release for BD? Who the hell wants either? Don’t know about you but my 3 year old is yet to come to me begging for Bd or hd for that fact. Kids movies are not going to push an early format. Did anyone run out & buy their kids DVD players when they first hit the market?

The war is far from over & it will go back & forth for a while. The fact is that Disney will have no effect on the early going because kids who’s jumping into new tech early on. Later yes, now, no. The only studio that might give HD a hard time is Fox. Other then that, Universal has allot better titles to release then the other BD exclusives. After 7 years of being a lyal Sony geek I woke up…Sony, while flashy, is just that & nothing more.

  • To all the xbox fanboys who supported a doomed format from the beginning because they are Bill Gates little bitches…

“Those who learn must suffer. And even in our sleep pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart. And in our own despair. Against our will. Comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God.”

    —Aeschylus

    RIP HD-DVD
    2003-2007

PS- anybody have a xbox360 HD-DVD add on they want to sell. I’ sa need a paper weight! ;-)

  • Call me when there’s a region-free Blu-ray player. Until then, I’m not interested.

And I’m getting tired of this Vince Veneziani troll.

  • hannibalchew_PS_FANBOY - February 1st, 2007 at 1:35 pm PST

hannibalchew just use your $699 PS3 as a paper weight. Plus everyone with any brains says 360 has better graphics than PS3. Also play your PS2 games on your $699 PS3 and tell me how they look. LOL

  • hannibalchew_PS_FANBOY - February 1st, 2007 at 1:37 pm PST

Gears of War is far better than Fall of Resistance. Go buy a 360 with GOW, WII with Zelda and it will still be cheaper than the PS3.

R.I.P. PS3. PS3 and Blue-ray is the next beta max.

  • hannibalchew_PS_FANBOY

“Gears of War is far better than Fall of Resistance. Go buy a 360 with GOW, WII with Zelda and it will still be cheaper than the PS3.

R.I.P. PS3. PS3 and Blue-ray is the next beta max.”

So sorry you cannot afford a better gaming console but don’t fret, minimum wages are going up.

  • 2007 game release for PS3-

    MGS4
    Warhawk
    Heavenly Sword
    Lair
    GT HD

  • What I don’t get is how people can say it’s cheaper to buy a 360 and Wii and all these games.

    Xbox 360 Premium bundle = $400
    Gears of War = $60
    Nintendo Wii = $250
    Zelda for Wii = $40

    Total? $750. Last I checked, PS3 costs $499 and $599.

  • How could anyone NOT take this article for Tongue-in-cheek? I mean c’mon. The cheaper alternative usually always wins. Betamax had higher quality than VHS, but the higher cost killed it. If Blu-Ray continues to have higher prices in both the players and the media than HD DVD, the latter will surely win. I believe LG is working on a combo optical that can use both, dunno if it’s true though.

As for the consoles themselves, the PS3 is hardly the greatest console. The worth of a console is as dependent on the game titles as it is on the competence of the hardware. In both cases the XBox wins by having higher image quality, albeit marginal, and far superior top titles than the PS3. Unless PS3 carries superior versions of the best titles for PS2, I’d have to go with the XBox.

  • hannibalchew

“So sorry you cannot afford a better gaming console but don’t fret, minimum wages are going up.”

You idiot, if you buy a Wii AND an Xbox 360, then it would be the same price as the PS3.

PS3 sucks, and so does blu-ray.

Sony probably paid this guy to write this piece of crap article.

  • noabasdg

How about getting a real job so you can buy all 3 consoles before making a judgement.

    who’s the idiot?

  • I still think it’s sarcasm. Who the flip would think Open Season or Saw III would be shoe-in’s for Best Picture??? ROFL

Anyone who can name PS3 games that presently top the XBox’s top titles please post, because I haven’t found any that do.

  • You know what Vince, you’re right. The 360, Wii, and all of those games do cost more than a PS3……BY ITSELF. Why don’t you go buy a couple of PS3 launch titles and run that math again.

“…don’t fret, minimum wages are going up.” Who do you think you are hannibalchew? What a stupid comment. I could afford any of the systems but the Wii is for kids and the PS3 is full of itself and in terms of graphics and raw processing power, is no better than the 360.

The PS3 is nothing but an overpriced, monolithic brick and BluRay does nothing to help it. Sony is backpeddling hard and fast now that it didn’t reach it’s lofty sales goals. Scalpers are now returning their PS3’s in droves because they’re not selling and the average auction price on eBay is steadily declining. Sony execs are sleeping on the job and letting exclusive titles slip away. Shall I go on?

The only thing shoring up BluRay’s sales is the PS3. Which means what class? Yes, very good, it means that without the PS3, BluRay is dead. THAT is the doomed proprietary format. The discs are too fragile (data layer closer to surface than HD or regular DVD) and it requires a different and more expensive manufacturing process than HD-DVD, which can be run off of regular DVD manufacturing lines with little retooling needed. Production costs down and durability up = long lasting potential. Don’t even bother arguing about storage capacity either because HD-DVD is going to release a 3-layer disc soon that will be larger than BluRay. Of course, then BluRay will make theirs bigger, and so on and so on…

  • vince_smokes_crack - February 1st, 2007 at 2:23 pm PST

    Vince.

Got my Xbox 360 Premium bundle = $300 ($100 rebate)
GOW = $40 post x-mas sale at target
    WII = $250
    Zelda = $40
    total = $630

    PS3 $600 plus F.O.R. for $60.
    Total = $660.

What would you rather have, 2 next gen systems plus 3 games for less than PS3 with F.O.R. and a blue-ray player? I would rather with today’s systems and current games, it is clear. 360 and WII wins for me.

  • That’s how it’s done Vince! If you want to encourage people to leave more than two or three comments on a post, just fill it with statements about not only one war, but TWO: The high def dvd format war and the console war, and then clearly take sides on both. Sweet :-)

Nice to finally see some action in the comments section here. My opinion? Well, the PS3 could never do for me what the 360 Media Center Extender does with my Vista, which is work like a charm :-)

And regarding BluRay vs. HD-DVD, I think BluRay will turn into a game-only format while HD-DVD will continue outselling it in movies, or has anyone forgotten already that BluRay doesn’t want to have porn on it? The adult entertainment industry decided the Betamax vs. VHS war, and it will decide this one as well. Not that any of you (or me) would buy porn on HD-DVD of course ;-)

  • I dunno how people can actually defend Blu-Ray with all the crap against it. The PS3 could’ve been a WICKED system, but instead Sony used it as a last ditch method to push its proprietary format. Then Sony produced a system with inferior hardware to its rival. And with the aforementioned abandonment of exclusive titles, not only does the PS3 have to contend with more desireable games, its fate is also tied into the fate of Blu-Ray disc. If the format dies, it takes the PS3 with it. But it didn’t have to be that way. I love my PS2, and I’m disappointed that its successor isn’t worth it for me. I would’ve loved to see improved sequels to major PS2 titles on the next gen. If they all end up on the XBox, that will be my next purchase.

  • You are absolutely ridiculous. If Crunchgear has any “decent reputation” they would ditch this hack. None of the information is valid. You are the reason why rumors and garbage are posted all over the web.

  • I can’t believe anyone would defend HD-DVD crap. I mean all the big blockbuster movies are all coming to Blu-ray except for one. TDK has already made 200gb Blu-ray discs vs 51gb HD-DVD. Blu-ray discs are scratch resistance, there’s already been tests using a screw driver and amazingly the BD still works fine, then you got all the exclusive studios behind Blu-ray, oh yeah manufacturers too! 96% are blu-ray players in Japan which is obviously won over there. Blu-ray has more contents as we speak, have you looked at the upcoming releases lately? HD-DVD is a JOKE!!! it’s only a matter of time Universal will start producing Blu-ray discs.

As for the console war. I own a PS3, XBOX 360 and played the Wii. I love both my PS3 and X360 but more towards my PS3. I’m not impress with the Wii, don’t like the idea of switching batteries on the controller when it’s out, graphics look like crap, if I wanna play golf or tennis, I prefer the real thing.

all you HD-DVD fanboys need to get it in your head, Blu-ray is going to prevail if you like it or not. Metal Gear Solid 4 is already taking up 50gb disc of space. without Blu-ray, you’ll have 7 DVD discs to switch from. Your DVD case will be 4 size of the normal DVD. screw that!! I want BD!!

  • @ Steve

I doubt you have set around with friends and played a Wii if you do not enjoy it more than any other console out there. I own all 3 consoles as well and will gladly play my Wii over any of them. Sure the PS3 has great graphics, but that is nothing new. Every year graphics have been the selling point, but not anymore, Nintendo has really changed the way video games are played and that is why sales are miserable for the PS3.

To be perfectly honest, the only reason I have a PS3 is because it is the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market. I am a big fan of new technology but I don’t see any reason that Blu-Ray will replace HD-DVD completely, at least not in any time soon. Also, no matter how much I lovethe color Blue, I just can’t help but think about the Laser Disc that was supposed to be the big thing a long time ago, for some reason I can see Blu-Ray going that way, but we shall see in time.

  • No one mentioned production costs… its so much cheaper to produce a HD DVD’s … as for MGS4 reaching 50GB, ahhaha… yeah crap code, and way oversampled audio, plus other lazyness would take up more space… Half of Resistance is crap video and audio.. give me a break… U know, I’ll make a V-RAY system, going to a smaller wavelength of light and fit more crap on a cd… and stick it to FONY!

  • Try writing an article from an UNBIASED point of view. Comments like ‘the greatest console ever, the Playstation 3. ‘ you arent really being unbiased in that comment, and through out the entire article. Please, before you post this bullshit and waste 10 minutes of my life, consider the actual facts of the other competitors. PS3 isnt fun to play. But hey, it makes a good paperweight AND heater.

  • all you of you heard it. Blue is winning stop whining. Not only this guy says it but other websites like the one posted on this one. Just stop arguing. For all you people arguing all you know is that it might change one day that HD might have an advantage over blue ray (yeah right, hahaha). Just wait a couple more months and then i will come back.

  • I purchased a brand new 60GB Playstation 3 from GameStop for $389.99. Less than the premium package of the 360. How? By trading in my old PS2 for $100 off sticker price. Along with that, I traded in my network adapter and about 15 games I don’t play anymore for another $111.

Some would say that I had to sacrifice something for the PS3. Yup, I sure did. My old beat up PS2 and 15 games I DONT PLAY. Now I have a brand new shinny Playstation 3 with already, count ‘em, FOUR games. That’s not much now but buying them together, with my PS3 and an extra controller feels pretty nice. As I sit back and enjoy them, I only sit happily waiting for the other exclusive titles I can hardly wait to play… Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Killzone 2, Lair, MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden, God of War 3, Devil May Cry 4, Tekken 6, Gran Turismo 5, Ratchet & Clank, and of course lets not forget; SOCOM.

If I get tired of waiting for any of those titles, I could always play some 360 games on my PS3 like; Saints Row, Splinter Cell Double Agent, GRAW 2, Call of Duty 3, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, so many…

Playstation 3 owners know that their money was well spent (at least the ones who did not pay the scalped eBay prices) and I assure you that no matter what you say your Xbox 360 and little Wii do for you, we sit happy with our Playstation 3s in our homes enjoying what it has to offer now and cherish what is in store for us in the near future.

Thank you Sony for giving us such a great machine!

ps: The GameStop deal ends February 18th! $100 off either model, 20 GB or 60 GB! That’s a PS3 for $400 or $500!

  • Well put “gamer”. i could not have said it better myself. except that the fact is that i wanted one so bad that i had to camp out for 10 hours to get mine. i also didn’t get it for your price i got it for the normal price. i also still kept my ps2 since i like to play guitat hero 2 on it with the 46 inch tv. and the ps3 with the 32 in samsung with bose system. and jbl system with the 46 inch. i am truly happy. never been happy. especially today which i found that blue ray is finally beating hd dvd. thats going to be great for us guys that own a ps3. peace out doug.

PlayStation 2 becomes “impulse buy”, outsells PlayStation 3
Posted on February 2nd, 2007 by Staff reporters

It must be painful being a Sony executive these days. Not only is the PlayStation 3 (PS3) being outsold by Nintendo’s Wii, but in the Japanese market it’s also being beaten by its elderly parent, the PlayStation 2 (PS2).

PlayStation 2 becomes “impulse buy”, outsells PlayStation 3

Champion PS2 beat PS3 sales in Japan

The PS2 is the most popular games console of all time, having sold more than 105 million units during its seven-year life. Despite the launch of the PS 3, the the popularity of the PS 2 still seems to be growing.

In the Japanese market in last full week of January (January 22 to January 28), the PS 2 sold 20,995 units, while the PS 3 sold 19,996 units, according to market research company Media Create.

Media Create receives sales information from 3000 stores around Japan, which it uses to estimate national sales.

Sony US spokesperson, Dave Karraker, recently dismissed the Wii as an “impulse buy”. In an interview with the New York Times. Karraker said that because the PlayStation 3 was much more powerful than the Wii, it did not belong in the same category.

It should be remembered that the price of the PS2 is about one third of the price of the PS 3, so to use the language of Sony PR, the PS2 really has become an “impulse buy”.

Sony hopes to ship 6 million PlayStation 3s worldwide by the end of March. It claims to have sold 2 million units as of mid January.

The sales figures from Media Create also reveal more bad news for Sony. They show that during that same week, Nintedo sold 83,754 Wiis, while Microsoft sold 7365 Xbox 360s. Nintendo’s portable DS Lite sold 194,526 units, against 35,700 PlayStation Portables.

There’s always an silver lining, and the great news for Sony is that because the PS2 is such an elderly machine, it can’t be considered to be in the same category as the PS3, and is therefore no threat to PS3 sales. And yes, I am angling for job with Sony PR.

Nintendo Wii Outsells Sony PlayStation 3 Three-to-One in Japan
    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,250543,00.html

TOKYO — Nintendo Co. Ltd.’s Wii game console outsold Sony Corp.’s (SNE) PlayStation 3 (PS3) by nearly three to one in January, Japan’s largest video game magazine publisher, Enterbrain, said on Tuesday.

Nintendo sold about 405,000 Wii units last month, compared with around 148,000 units of the PS3 sold, Enterbrain said.

Wii and PS3, made by two of the biggest players in the $30 billion global video game industry, went on sale late last year in a three-way showdown with Microsoft Corp.’s (MSFT) Xbox 360.

A wider range of software titles for the Wii is luring more users, while the PS3’s higher price tag is hindering sales growth, Enterbrain said.

The basic model of the PS3 sells for 49,980 yen ($415.9) in Japan, double the price for the Wii.

Nintendo has sold a total 1.4 million units of the Wii in Japan, far outpacing the 614,000 PS3 units sold, Enterbrain said.

“There could be a price cut for the PS3 by the end of the year, and more software titles will hit the market. I expect the PS3 to be doing better after a while,” Enterbrain President Hirokazu Hamamura said.

“Of course, the Wii will keep running ahead all the while.”

Shares in Nintendo were unchanged at 32,950 yen in afternoon trade, while Sony was up 2.1 percent at 5,820 yen.

    LOL @ u PS3 fanboys

  • What tards, just watch, u’ll see sooner or later disney will start supporting hd dvd, why? $$$ thats y! there not stupid, so just watch and then when this happens blu-ray sales will rapidly slow down.

  • this id dumbest article i have read. the second paragraph doesnot make sense. this proves any idiot with a keyboard can and will write an article,

  • I bought a Sony 46XBRR3 1080p LCD and a PS3 to play my Blu-ray movies and haven’t look back since. The only thing I can complain about is that the PS3 hasn’t updated it’s firmware to upscale my old DVDs but for $600 I have a BD player ($1000 for others) a next-generation gaming console ($250-$400) with wifi internet access, a 60gig storage for my saved games, videos, photos and music, and like no other gaming console it has a future-proof HDMI 1.3… I call my living room…heaven! Oh, I moved my old XBox to my bedroom and gave my PS2 to my younger brother and I don’t think HDDVD will last a year.

  • I love the fact that someone says that the “gimmic” here today, gone next year console the Wii is tops.lol Like I say, as did the Gamecube, it will fly then die. Sorry, but it will.

Another day, another bad PS3 article.

    http://www.informationarbitrage.com/2007/02/from_inside_ea_.html

From Inside EA: Buy Xbox 360 and/or Wii - NOT PS3

robpas robpas submitted, made popular 1 day 10 hours ago (www.informationarbitrage.com)

In the wake of my somewhat incendiary post on EA, I discovered an interesting comment on the blog FreeRepublic.com from Dr. Andrew Garrett, a game developer for EA. By way of background, Dr. Garrett is a major dude, having joined EA in early 2003 as part of a major hiring spree. Here is a quick bio that was posted on the blog MegaGames in the wake

  • I am huge XBOX fan it was most capable system ever!!!!! That is until the PS3 came out!!! I’m a big gammer, Huge Online gammer and as far as Picture, speed, sound the Sony PS3 is going to be the system for the next 5 years… Don’t read all the garbage that people tell you about the PS3, I gaurentee they don’t own one… If they did it would be a different story. The the only downfall to the PS3 is the games arent quite there yet, but give it a couple months because plenty of big realeases are due to come out. So (I own both the XBOX 360 and the PS3) I have played the Wii, but Im an adult, not a 5 year old… The Wii is a great system no doubt if your 5.

  • Funny how you think the PS3 is now the most capable machine. Yes maybe for a gaming machine only (with no content). But I will stick for the extras XBOX offers. Networking rules with the Xbox and I am not talking about the memberships-Playing music (without having to download it from Sony’s site). Streaming recorded HDTV from Media center pc flawlessly. Up converting DVD’s and a bonus Add on HD DVD player. Downloading HD and BD titles in High Def. Downloading Hi Def tv shows and regular SD shows.

The difference in Sony and Xbox is that Xbox is going to make a crap load more money. There Network alone will make them millions upon millions.

  • Ok! I think this whole war has gone on long enough. But to be quite honest regarding both these formats, they provide great picutre quality, great sound and interractive menus. But to say that HD DVD is better than Blu Ray and vice versa…..well………that’s just silly. But to say which TECHNOLOGY is better, well then that’s a whole different story.

I own both an X-Box 360 and a PS3 and both consoles are fantastic. However, when people start saying that PS3 is a 600$ paperweight, I must say that the statement is completely ludicrous. The PS3 only came out in North America on 11/17/2006. Basically, about 3 months ago. You can’t possibly conceive that Sony can produce the same amount of games that Microsoft did for X-Box 360, in 3 months. The X-Box 360 console has been out for almost 2 years and has had the opportunity to produce a large amount of games. Give the PS3 time to do the same and the scales will tip again towards the side of the PS3.

Now, this whole format war is getting pretty much out of hand, but let’s look closely at what has occured within a 16 month period.

HD DVD was outselling Blu Ray during the year of 2006. Now let us examine why.

HD DVD had the leg up during that year because more movies were being released in that format and the HD DVD players had already been produced, giving the public the ability to appreciate the new technology. Universal, which is the ONLY principal supporter of this format, began to release old blockbuster movies such as, “The Fast and the Furisous”, “Aeon Flux”, “The Mummy”, etc.. These movies allowed the public to enter electronic stores and view these incredible pieces of technology display a vibrant and detailed picture on a HDTV. Now, during that year, Sony, started to develop and market their product, the Blu Ray disc. Now let us look at the Blu Ray disc technology.

The Blu Ray disc technology, comparatively, is better than the HD DVD. You can store more information, which allows for better viewing on your HDTV. I did a comparison between the HD DVD version of “The Departed”, “Sleepy Hollow” and “Superman Returns” and the Blu Ray version of “The Departed”, “Sleepy Hollow” and “Superman Returns” and there was a significant difference between these two formats regarding the picture qulality and clarity. I own a Sony Bravia HDTV, with a 1080i picture projection, and with the HD DVD, in many instances of the movies, I wasn’t really impressed with the colour and the clarity. Don’t get me wrong, it looked better than regular DVD pixelling, but nothing to brag about. Then I watched the movies on Blu Ray, and WOW………what a difference. The picture, the colour, the clarity and the sound, all of these features were better than the HD DVD counterpart by tenfold. Then I started researching to try and figure out why there was such a noticeable difference between these 2 formats and this is what I found. With Blu Ray, the technology allows the studio to input more information. Such information can be colour shematics, pixell clarity, audio definition and so on and so forth. Therefore, the Blu Ray disc will give you the maximum details output that the film has to offer in both sound and picture because it has more of a storage capacity. Unfortunately, the HD DVD doesn’t have as much capacity. That is what I mean by, “we should be looking at the technology”. I know that there are MANY people out there who hate and despise Sony. Whatever their reasons are, I will respect them. I also know that there are many people who have looked at Sony’s previous attempts to make their products the “mainstream” product to use and have failed, such as Betamax, 8-track, the PSP movies etc.. But let us not only look at their failures, but at their successes as well. The CD was a Sony invention back in 1969 and gained success along with Philips back in 1980. Betamax failed, but Sony introduced the VCR technology to the world. In additon to that, Sony’s technology is not something that should be discriminated against. Look at the PS and PS2. These gaming consoles gave Ninteno a run for it’s money back in the 1990’s. Then the PS2 came out and it was virtually unstoppable regarding the sales aspect. Microsoft came out with the X-Box, but even though it gave the PS2 a run for it’s money, it didn’t surpass it. Now, though, the X-Box 360 is in more homes, has more games and has been exposed to the public for a longer time. The HD DVD add on helps with the HD DVD sales, but the add on is still 199.99$. All together, the system and the add on are equivalent to the price of the PS3. The PS3 needs time to get to the top of the mountain again. And it will. The console is great, the picture and sound quality are amazing and the games will just keep on getting better. And also keep in mind, when the PS3 was introduced on 11/17/06 to North America (specifically in Canada, since I will quote the Canadian stats for the release of the product), they were sold out within a week and were very hard to find to purchase after that. The only way that they could’ve been purchased were only online via US merchants and the conversion would cost more than if bought in a Canadian electronics store like Future Shop. Only as of late have the stores been able to stock up on the consoles and even in that regard, they are selling them at a quick rate.

In addition, Blu Ray movies have exploded into the mainstream. You have Sony (Columbia), 20th Century Fox, Disney, Buena Vista, Touchstone, Paramount, Warner Bros., Miramax, LionsGate, MGM and the Weinstein Company, as the MAJOR backers of the Blu Ray technology. HD DVD has Universal, Paramount, Warner Bros., and the Weinstein company. Now, which technology has more support regarding the movie studios? It’s not difficult to see which one has more support. And there are a number of other supporters for the Blu Ray as well as for the HD DVD technology. But, when looking at the support that Blu Ray has, it’s hard not to think that Blu Ray will win in the end.

And to make a comment about the Porn Industry’s influence on the format war………..Many people are saying that it is VHS vs. Betamax all over again. Betamax lost because they wouldn’t allow porn to use their technology and in additon to that, their technology was too expensive for them to use back in the 1980’s. But it is now 2007. And so many things have changed since the 1980’s. Especially the manner in which we gather and research information. The invention which has helped us with that is………..tatatada………..drum roll please………….”The Internet”. Ever since the inception and utilization of the internet, the Porn Industry has seen sales fall for their VHS and DVD movies and visitation to their adult content websites rise, rise and rise again. People download now and pay less to join these sites than it is to buy a DVD. And, starting very soon, the Porn Industry will start displaying their interent content in High Definition anyway. And will be giving more access to other sites with the same definiton quality. Consumers are purchasing computers with LCD screens which can display the picture quality in high definition as well. People are spending more money on Home Theatre systems for regular movies and leaving porn on their computers to be viewed in the privacy of their own studies/rooms. So, by stating that porn will be the decision maker in the format war is veering towards the wrong direction. It was the decision maker in the 1980’s, but, ladies and gentlemen, a lot of things have changed in 27 years. The adult film industry has evovled with the times. For profit and less money spent, the Internet is the current life blood of porn. Not to mention pay per view.

In conclusion to this, I hope that I have provided enough info to explain why I feel that Blu Ray will win the format war. Not to take away anything from the HD DVD realm, but I think that by the end of the year, with the massive amount of movie titles which will be available on Blu Ray and the drop in prices for both the PS3 and Blu Ray players, the consumers will finally realize that Blu Ray is not only the next step for high definition movie watching, but also the next step of evolution for technology.

  • Mr. Perfect works for Sony.

  • Boy did Sony really drop the ball with the PS3. Every F’n game released so far sucks!! I’m sorry to say im dissapointed. :(

  • Boy, Sony really dropped the ball with the PS3. C’mon every F’n game released sucks bad !! Sorry but im really disapointed :(

p.s. Sony is really the nazi’s ran by Adolf Hitler

  • Thanks Mr. Perfect for helping me choose which format to pick. Definitely blu-ray! You’re the first person here to write a convincing argument. I have a 360 which I enjoy very much for the games (Gears of War Rules!!!), but I agree that blu-ray does look a little better and PS3 will definitely have an improved selection of games in the future to come. At Sears they had a blu-ray display and hd-dvd display side by side and I stood there and watched for a while and not only did I, but everyone else who observed said, “I like the blu-ray picture better!” The 360 and PS3 are both excellent gaming systems and the winner, if any, will be the one with the better games, but I truly believe blu-ray will beat hd-dvd and maybe 360 will offer a blu-ray add on instead.

  • I like how all 4 titles you mentioned are not HD, but were rather just transfered onto HD discs. There are only 23 titles in HD so far, and only a couple of them are completely HD. Sadly, majority of the titles suck. HD is still the future, not yet the present.

Shame the average customer doesn’t know that much about HD.

  • mr perfect is talking out of his ass. The only movie he mentioned that was actually HD is superman, its the only one that will make you say WOW when not viewed side by side against a normal DVD, much less an HD-DVD.
