The War Is Over: Blu-ray Outselling HD DVD

I’m a man of some intelligence and I certainly know when a silly electronics war is over. So when I read up on these stats regarding Blu-ray and HD DVD sales, I knew the format war was won. As an avid fan of the color blue for the past 15 years, I had a hunch Blu-ray was going to win hands down. I mean, HD DVD doesn’t even have a color in it’s name. How are you supposed to distinguish between the two? In America, we have red, white, and blue—not red, white, and HD DVD.

According to Niesen VideoScan, Blu-ray was gaining on HD DVD throughout 2006. For every 92 Blu-ray discs sold, 100 HD DVD discs found their way into homes, putting Blu-ray behind, but barely.

Now that we’re in 2007, Blu-ray has caught up to the “other” format and is now outselling HD DVD more than 2 to 1. The reason why? Obviously, the greatest console ever, the Playstation 3. Not only did Sony play a crucial role in giving Blu-ray a boost, but they did it at an affordable price. Sure Microsoft’s Xbox 360 might have that silly HD DVD add-on, but who wants to drop $200 on a plastic enclosure that sits outside your console? Not a sane person, that’s for sure.

Lastly, there are also the films. Titles like Saw II and Open Season probably should have tied each other for “Best Picture” at the Oscars, but for now, I’ll let it slide. With groundbreaking titles like these, it’s no wonder why Sony’s Blu-ray has pulled ahead so far while leaving HD DVD in the dust. I mean, just look at the competitor’s titles! Brokeback Mountain? Liar Liar? I suppose if you’re into playing games of naked Twister with Jim Carey on your TV, HD DVD gets the job done just fine. As for me, I don’t settle for “just fine,” so I’ll see you and your PS3 at the local Movie Mart while I pick up some new Blu-ray discs.

  • The difference maker for me is that, from what i can gather from research, Blu-Ray can display 1080p while HD-DVD can only produce 720p/1080i.

Progressive scan makes a BiG difference! I mean, it did back in the day when 480p made 480i look like… well i’m sure you guys remember.

I’m just prepping myself until i can get that 1080p HDTV. 1080p is the future until someone comes out with the Gamma-Ray disc player with 5043p, heh.

  • If PS3 was an inferior product from the 360 how come they are already making an upgrade for it? Oh, and fans of HD-DVD you do know that MS if the upgrade comes with HD-DVD it will ask devs to only make it in HD-DVD you know that right? Seriously. Don’t be dumb. Better product. Tell that to the 10% who had the ring of death. Oh, and those systems aren’t fixed. Or how about the crases? Or even the texture errors (Artificing). Yes, I have seen them with my own eyes. You 360 fans are so dumb. Better product? Ps3 barely even 1% or less hardware problems. Hell, they didn’t have any. So dumb.

  • Bluray is doing great, Casino Royal just set some sort of record. PS3 is breaking records for sales in the UK now that it is launched their. PS3 first gen games are close or better (motocross) then 2nd gen xbox games…can you imagine how much better then 2nd gen PS3 games will be?
What happens when xbox needs more space and some games only come out on HD-DVD? You have to go drop another 200…all the sudden your xbox with worse graphics, and overheating problems costs more then your PS3…
PS3 will win long term, and Bluray will win long term…until something better comes along anyway

  • Ok for sure the format war is over now……. blockbuster has decided to go with blu ray only in all there stores bye bye hd dvd i stand behind the man that says america is all about the red white and bluray.

  • Well i would say hope you don’t choose a format bases on what blockbuster they clearly will go bankrupt any day now. And lets not down play the picture quality of hddvd lookin at films on both formats is amazing. The sugustion i would make is purchase the lg super blue player it plays both formats and up converts regular dvds thats the option i picked i work for sears and they had it on sale for 799 plus i got my discount. My suggestion to people is to not mae a decison and ge an up convert dvd player for now. wait it out a little longer. The image quality of any film varies tittle by tittle. New big budget movie look better than small budget old movies so if were going to compare things compare the same thing dont tell me you pluged up both players to a sony tv clearly the setting on the set will display better. simular products work better. I tell one and all try lg super blue

  • heh blu ray wont win because the PS3 is technically a flop. the ONLY place it is selling well is in Japan and thats a small market globally compared to North America and Europe. Ps3 has limited inferior online game support, a handful of games (most of which were out on the 360 months before), a larger price tag. Published sales for the PS3 are down on expectations. Way down, hence the drop in price. Sony is becoming desperate, and has the smell of defeat all over it. I have both consoles so no one can call me biased, but one thing i know for sure is which one i spend the most time on and it isnt PS3. They have nothing that competes with Live and now with the recently released Halo3, you can see the PS3 slip even further. Rip

  • ps3 is doing well in the UK james? and just where do you get your information lol i dont know ANYONE cept me with a ps3 but i know loads with a 360. Talk about being a fanboy trying to instill greater confidence in a failing product.

  • to the guy called idiots. You bet your life you are one. an idiot that is. you dumb sucks who bought a ps3 5 months ago and then Sony shoots you in the ass. AGAIN by lowering the ps3 price. hard luck all you peopel who bought one at the much higher price. Sonys dropped the price cos they aernt selling them, and the STATISTICS back that up. Live has over 1,5 million members now, Sony is lucky if they have 50,000.

or maybe the real fact said by microsoft it self that the red ring of death has cost them now in the massive millions to fix for free might i add than they will make o but they get some back cuzz u actually pay for xboxlive plus i do think japan has what like 7 billion people there compared to the 300million or whatever in north america and europe so small bit of the market huh and one more thing i had a 360 and got rid of it thank u fuck up microsoft on 3 red rings for me never had a prob with ps3 and home will blow away xbox live lol

  • and i guess 360 hasnt adjusted there consels either or maybe all those game versions of 360s and out of all those 360 owners i dont know a single one with the hd drive added in or bought the package that had it built in so ps3 sell out on first day in us at what 500,000 so thats 500,000 bluray sold on day one dont know but i think that blew away and hd dvd players sold and completley dominated 360 hd addon what a joke

  • All i have to say this aint PS3vs360. Its Blu Ray vs HD DVD. And Blu Ray is killing HD DVD, there outselling them almost 3 to 1.. Plus to add to that, Target has chose to sell only Blu Ray players in stores and to make it worst Blockbuster only supports Blu Ray, to an average person what would you buy? A item that’s in all stores? Or and item that you see less and less places selling… Exactly. As for PS3vs360, i cant comment on that since i dont know much knowledge about it.

  • the only reason ps3 vs 360 came in is cuzz the ps3 has a blu ray drive in it and 360 has a add on hd drive

  • Obviously you dont know the first thing about economics. When there are a lot of sales and the production increases the cost of production lowers and so does the price. Then with the price lowered the sales increase more until the market is saturated.

I hate it when people talk from their ass.
