The above chart clearly shows that upgrading OS X will be as easy tripping over your own feet. As for Vista, it’s more like trying to get a pro-PS3 article submitted to Digg. Maybe Microsoft should take a hint from Apple and stop releasing about 60 million versions of its next OS.
Vista Mac Upgrade [MacHouse]

Lucky number 13… I guess now they even want superstitions to bow at their feet ;-)

I happen to think choice is a good thing!
Typical hypocritical Apple babble.
The anti-anything-Microsoft fools would whine about a single, everything-included OS (”Why does M$FT force people to pay for things they don’t want?!”), or multiple options (”Why does M$FT complicate things by offering so many options?!”).
Damned if you do, damned if you don’t…
Why does apple release a Service pack and Claim its a new os?
why not offer options gives the customer more choice in the matter what they want and dont want, what they need and dont need,
Unfortunately all of them come with craptastic IE.
And you’re right, choice is a good thing. Thankfully we have Linux and OS X
to take the pain away.

Even though Apple upgrades every couple years or so, the upgrades are worth it, and easy to do. It also only costs, $79 bucks. It also doesn’t have the DRM or complications Windows has.
And to get Basic only to upgrade that to Premium and then to Ultimate would cost more than 10.1 through 10.5
Also don’t forget MS Live OneCare to protect the PC from the OS that just came out and you just paid for. $50 bucks a year anyway.
And as choice goes, you don’t need to upgrade to tiger, we already have EVERYTHING Vista has and we had these thing for years.
PS. Exposé is way better, as in usefulness than that scrolling thing you have.
I’ll try not to jump into yet another Microsoft vs Apple debate here, but I just wanted to note that an upgrade from any version of Vista to another can be taken care of with “Windows Anytime Upgrade,” which allows users to purchase a license and use their original installation DVD to upgrade.

……?
MacOS X are nothing else but service packs hidden in a “new os”. They just include a decoy such as exposé to make you think you’re getting something valued at 79. If you think about it, they have charged you 79 times 6 (10, 10.1 and so on) for the whole OS X thing.
Doesn’t Apple have the most annoying DRM scheme EVER? What about iTunes? You PAY for music you “own” but you can only listen to on THEIR players!
What’s up with you people.. at least if you’re flaming MS on every post, you should open your eyes and see that Apple is not as innocent as you all say.
Thanks.
“It also doesn’t have the DRM or complications Windows has.”
Wow. Do you even know what DRM is? Please don’t ever post on the internet again, your stupidity might adversely affect the IQ of anyone reading anything you say.
That 13 versions scheme is easy to understand, but only if you try a second.
Face it, it’s a pure visual publicity stunt based on emotions.
And the bad thing about DRM (Apple and MS) is to bind it to a specific product (”mea culpa” of the entertainment industry).
BTW, I use Mac (for happy hours), Windows (work) and Linux (game server), multiple choice and not bothering about I-got-the-better makes your life really rich…
well, im not a windows fan, im actually a mac user and dont really care if osx release a new version of their os every 2 years. most of the stuff on vista are just copies of mac, google “windows vista copies mac os x” and look at how many bad reviews you get. anywayz, im still installing vista on my boot camp partition :P i just wanna try it out, but i had to go throgh a complicated process to finish |-)…..
2 words “MAC RULES!”
hi im a windows user and i just bought a new laptop and media centre edition of xp as im to recive the express upgrade from HP however im also a big fan of mac os x and plan on getting a macbook pro or a mini mac. I think that os x is much easy to use and you dont have to spend about £40 (gbp) on antivirus software every year and the new upgrades are much cheaper than windows anyway
Hey guys the author of this article forgot something very important. Each edition of Windows Vista, except for home basic, is available in both 32bit AND 64bit versions, so you can double the number of options on that upgrade chart. Could the author please re-do this chart to show the full complexity of the situation? It would be quite incredible to see it.
@Mysterious
Btw son, Vista has been working on a lot of the features that Mac implemented after 2001 before that. Vista had those so called “mac features” in plan for Vista, but Mac copied that and then claimed that Windows was copying it.
What about the one/two mouse button functionality? I didn’t hear Windows users whining that Mac suddenly had two mouse buttons. Let’s compared Windows 95…to say that Mac OS at that period.
Complete rubbish…You can cleary see from 1995 onwards Mac started copying Windows features.
Whoever authored this article has fallen from Macintosh propaganda
@Jude – That could be the case. But Mac’s seem to do it better ;)
macs rule pc are rubbish they can make up their own software and reley upon oter componies to make their hardware for them and it sometimes is not a smooth bringing together……..BUY A MACINTOSH….darren bloor is wrong!!!
Well i dont really care about which one is best. I have a pc and just since a week got a mac pro and osxx and guess what 20 yrs of MS experience and am going to throw it all through the windows. Why ? Vista and the upcoming Longhorn are just fat pigs, cost way to much money and come from a company that has decided in the last years to behave realy very arrogant.
On a Mac everything simply works. And for those things i really have to do on windows i got bootcamp, parallels or VMware.
Thank but i dont need PC’s anymore way to much trouble. And sorry investigate properly before you make certain claims (mac had some features since 1989 that MSFT even never had thought off at that moment, lets not even talk how to write a kernel which they still havent figured out, OSX is the culmination of scientific work (MACH, NUKernel, FREEBSD) of over 30 years.
But hey you love Vista have fun with it.
Since that picture really tells us that Windows is giving more options. I have come to a conclusion that Vista was aimed to a wide range of users. Unlike Apple, who only gave one option…it’s a bit dichotomous. Shall I buy a Mac or not? For Windows, you have freedom to choose the version that fits your need and depending on your wallet size. Yet the person who made a comment about Windows knows nothing about marketing or business for that matter. The business strategy was to acquire a variety of customers, not just a Mac lover. I don’t buy Macs because of Steve Jobs. I don’t like what he did to Bill Gates back in the 80s.
Hi, I’m a Windows user and my Acer keyboard recently started to become dodgy and I had to continue programming that day with a massive amount of right and deadlines right in front of me. so I stupidly went out and bought a MacBook as an experiment – I was fairly skeptical and thought that it would be a fun novelty but I’d get annoyed about lack of familiarity and eventually go back to the Acer with the keyboard fixed. So I went in to Terminal and compiled my Java code (I did not have to install anything because the MacBook came with Java development kit straight out of the box), FTP’d the upgrades to the server with FileZilla (same as I used on PC) and so I could continue working that day.. Then I started getting familiar with all the nuances and the first week I was programing at about 80% the speed, then the next week about the same speed and presently I’m finding that I’m getting work done a little faster (and somehow it just feels more comfortable) than on the PC. So think I’m here to stay.
Regarding upgrades, the life span of a PC is generally a fair bit less than a Mac from mt experience of talking to people, but I don’t think this is so much the hardware (it is this also, but not so much) as the software.. The Mac OS X does not get clogged up after a year or two of heavy use in the same way that Windows does. So generally you don’t “need” to upgrade (or re-install) Mac OS X so much as you need to either re-install or upgrade Windows. Of course you can re-install windows whenever you want but in practice people often see the operating system getting slower and slower and things going wrong and then they think “time for a new computer” rather than re-installing.
idk i dont care like you guys do!!!!
I’m a 19 year old student studying computer science at Sydney University. I have used pc’s all my life, and im glad to say that i finally came to my senses about 2 months ago. I own a macbook black core 2 duo 2.0ghz, 1gb ram 120g hd etc. It is the best computer i have ever owned. Prior to my macbook i used an AMD Athlon 3200 64bit, 1.5gb ram, nvidia 256mb dedicated graphics card, 19″ widescreen LCD running windows vista ultimate. Ran great on both xp and vista, but i could never escape the constant errors, security reminders, driver updates etc. The simplicity of the Mac OS combined with the power of the intel core 2 due is just incredible!
Its true what they say you know…Once you go mac, you NEVER go back!!!
=)
MAC Rocks
Vista OK
XP Faster than Vista
I am thinking of getting a macbook after leopard is released, but i am not sure wheter they will punch in leopard into a macbook as it is 64bit. love to see apple do it. apple is simple and not overhyped like windows. it is SECURE, SIMPLE, SPEEDY and SEXY. and to those assholes up there saying new MAC OS is a service pack, look again. no service pack would have over 300 new features in it.
I have been using windows since version 3.1 and always enjoyed the challenge of keeping my pc running as if it was new. About 2001 my patience started running out when the glitches on windows 2000 pro kept annoying me. Constantly upgrading hardware, reinstalling software and administering my computer as if it belongs to the secret service did no longer fit in my increasingly demanding schedule as a Webmaster, c++ programmer, restaurant manager and student. I started experimenting with Linux and was really delighted at the performance upgrade and customization options. The learning curve and sketchy resources at that time did not allow me to use Linux as my #1 os and I still relied heavily on windows for my web design and administrating.
About 6 months my friend sold me his new powerbook g4 because he “didn’t like Mac.” For the first time I had an affordable Mac and my journey began. It took me about a week to do everything I do on windows as the same speed. Now I work twice as fast and this elegant os simply works!!! No more not working for any obvious reason as with windows and intermittent freezing. I have also realized that hardware especially disk drives have better performance and longer life on os x. Mac rules. Unix is rock solid and soon as Linux becomes easier for the average user, I foresee windows mainly in the workplace where IT’s don’t have the luxury of changing operating systems.
For all the Mac haters try it. It is not like windows and that’s a good thing!!!
The reason there is only one version of the mac Os is because the one and only version of OSX already contains each and every one of all of the features that all 13 versions and additions of Vista together have. You only need one.

Visat Home Basic costs around $200.
Leopard will cost $129.
One gets you the most basic system that you can “upgrade” in 13 different, confusing varieties.
One gives you everything at one time.
Are people trying to debate on whether Leopard will be a good buy? Seriously?
I’m just happy that all the music junkies and the “I’ve got to have the latest thing” crowd are paying Apple to build me the best machine ever made. Thanks!
I really do think that all of your opinions are just that – opinions without any data – driven proof. I love both machines. Unfortunately, I prefer PC’s because they are cheaper and I have more freedom with the parts I want to replace or upgrade. You can’t do that in Macs without spending thousands of dollars! Now for the OS, I prefer windows. I really like Vista because it’s not a hybrid, they didn’t use other operating systems like Unix to boost up performance. All versions of OS X are slow and they false advertise about it being better than PC. They say that OS X is original — no! OS X is a BSD and looks a lot like a Linux distribution. Vista might have copied a few little gadgets but they didn’t copy the TRANSPARENT windows. Based on the data provided in a lot of websites in regards to OS reviews, Vista tops all of them when it comes to security. (search in google)
Now people may say, “Oh I hate vista it’s so slow!” Well…you did not check the system requirement to run this operating system. You might want to get a new computer to run Vista because it will not run on your grandfathered PC.
If you are just a Microsoft hater, well, we can’t force you to like them. I find that a lot of MS haters to have missing screws in their head. So get over it, get some therapy, take your anti-depressants and start using logic for once.
Best~

Having worked at Microsoft, I can tell you that they would rather not have to release so many versions of their operating system. It’s time-consuming and expensive to maintain all of these versions.
The reason they do is because of all the lawsuits against them that require them to sell stripped down versions of their operating systems.
If it wasn’t for the lawsuits, they would gladly sell (as they had done in the past) a consumer version and a server version, and leave it at that.

If that’s true, can I upgrade my Mac G3 to Leopard?
No, there are hardware requirements in upgrading as well, Noname, and that hardware requirement is either Intel or PowerPC G4 or higher.
Microsoft making so many choices is stupid, because it’s not like lower ones are more ideal for personalized use than Ultimate or Business are, it just that they leave out features and still charge multiple times the cost of the feature-complete Leopard.
Now it’s an issue with how many versions are out?? This is getting really annoying.
Let me put it this way…say I’m an Apple user (thankfully not), and uses my Mac for typing letters only, and sometimes surf the net. So why on earth do I need to pay for all the other useless trinkets they are rubbing off on me, atleast I can save money when buying Vista.
Say I’m a business owner, using a Mac for business stuff only, so why would I need iMovie and iTheater and iTunes etc. With Windows I would save money.
Windows can run on any PC that manages the minimum. I guess Apple users are so used to being ripped off they would fight to protect it. PC users have the option of buying any damn PC they want to, even build their own. Unlike Apple who rapes your behind when forcing you to buy a Mac. Upgrade wise, Windows users has a universe of options…drivers everywhere available…and we all know that Vista has limited driver support currently…but isn’t that the case whenever a new Windows is released?
Windows Users have the option of customizing their interface on Premium versions so that the glass look will change colour, or remove it altogether….if it is so “distractively translucent”
Can Apple Mac OS X send faxes through the modem on your PC using a standard phone line….and receive them?
Can Leopard play any game out there? Windows Vista sports the new DirectX 10….which supports High Definition Gaming. Unlike Leopard with it’s limited graphic capabilities.
Windows is the most secure platform out there, unlike Leopard which may be more secure?? because there is very limited threats.
I can upgrade my PC myself….
If people started to give up their freedom of choice by buying into Apple’s dictatorship, we can just go back to the time when black people was oppressed and women had no rights.
If MACs are so much better than why does everyone emulate windows on them?
I don’t emulate windows and I don’t have any microsoft malware on my machine.
Lol!
There doesn’t even need to be a CD for Linux to upgrade to the latest version.
ha just reading through some of the posts, i found this a most amusing read, especially at Dreyer Smit’s.
my god that soul don’t know what he’s rambling on about, pissa – I see it this way, if your going bitch about Mac don’t point out its better than microsoft features
a couple of quotes from Dreyer Smit i found really amusing and must comment upon!
❶ “Can Apple Mac OS X send faxes through the modem on your PC using a standard phone line….and receive them?”
- can i just say! Fax seriously? this is part of your argument? Have you only just come out of the 80’s, you do know we have email and instants messenger these days?
❷ “Windows is the most secure platform out there, unlike Leopard which may be more secure?? because there is very limited threats.”
- hmmm, contradicting yourself there a bit mate, asking your self a question! then answering it with the obvious. just setting up a brand new netbook(XP) for my mother just yesterday, windows seems to panic from the moment you switch on, it repeatedly told me:
“you have no anti virus software installed, your computer maybe vulnerable to the thousands of new virus’s found everyday, do you want to go online and find software to fix this?”
first thing i did was download clamwin using the mac and transfered it over the internal network to install on the netbook along with firefox, even before i let it have a sniff of the outside world, I’m not stupid!
lets see who wins on how many viruses they can have:
windows-2,000 new viruses a day, 365 days a year = 730,000 to name some, not to mention the no. of years thats been a problem!
mac-7 new viruses a day? NO, 7 new viruses a year? oh NO! try about 7 new viruses a decade and even some of them look fun to have, take a look at newton virus for mac, its a laugh!
❸ “Can Leopard play any game out there?”
- Yes Yes it can, its called a little help from either my dual booting friend(bootcamp) or emulation(parallels, VMware, ect.)
I could go on, but lets face it this guy is just a prime example of why mac is so great!
I think we know who wins here!
P.S. one last mention, any you guys seen the new windows 7 beta? how very mac like it all seems to be, the task bar has just become a very shoddy dock knock off!
I would just like to comment here. Unlike the market Mac caters to, alot of people still prefer sending faxes outside in the real world.
Secondly, you say that Mac can play any game out there. Okay, you need emulators/VMWare/Parallels/bootcamp to name a few. Firstly you’ll have to buy a astromically price inflated Mac (Low end PC hardware with a Apple stuck on it) then you’ll have to buy Windows (for the bootcamp…you end up spending a shitload just to play a game, which will be stripped off features because Macs rarely have DX10 ready graphics. Why? I ask you would any person in their right mind would choose Mac…oh I guess you did.
Windows 7 (I am testing it) is already busting Apple. I heard countless of Apple users saying they like Windows 7 and that they would buy it for their Macs…OH NO!!! WHAT IS HAPPENING!!! MAC USERS CANT LIKE MICROSOFT??? And it’s not a dock knock off, have you even used Windows 7 before making such comments? I guess not.
And another thing PC users can do that MAC users cant—SHUT THE F%CK UP!
I would like to point some things out here :
- I’m not saying that OSX is a bad OS but it’s a lot easier to make a faultless OS for a limited range of hardware specs. Windows runs on almost any computer as long as it isn’t too old.
- Let’s not forget that OSX is based on linux
- According to an IBM test, OSX has more security holes in it than windows vista.
- The only fair way to compare the two OS’s would be when they both run on custom based computers from the box. Windows does that more or less (you still have to install drivers) but OSX doesn’t!
I don’t want to buy an overpriced white box of hardware with the apple logo on it!!!!
I want to build my own PC and still be able to run OSX.
Well technically Apple gives you two options: Leopard and Leopard Server.
But still a much simpler OS release model from Apple.
I would just like to point out that windows is better for the working person, and mac is better for the on-the-go person. mac is easy to set up, has great systemwide security, and has gret customer support. it also hase a native app for almost everything. windows, on the other hand, has a little thing called bsod. mac logs everything, so fi you get a kernal panic, go check the log.
