Free International Calling Yanked… Not Quite

It took advantage of some sort of loophole, explained here, that involves some sort of rural carrier arbitrage deal, whatever that means. Apparently some lobbyists and government types essentially shut down the number recently and there will be no free calls for you… or perhaps not?

What I don’t understand is why the telcos don’t just create a Skype-killer and offer flat rate calls all over the world. They can make their money on selling home Internet access and grab a large chunk of late adopters.

  • Thanks for the mention John

  • Does anybody know why futurphone was pulled? If it’s government involvement then surely allfreecalls etc. would have been pulled or facing the same legal action? Services that work on an arbitrage principle have been around in the UK for years e.g. http://www.dialabroad.co.uk/mobileplus so it’s shame they are struggling to get off the ground in the US. Hope allfreecalls survives.

  • Well John, your suggestion is great – but it is like saying why don’t all the nations of the world make peace and we will all prosper… Great idea, but not so simple to implement. Same here there are many countries (actually the majority of the world!) who are not democratic. Their governments think they will make more money by over charging for termination of calls to their country. So no one can really offer a flat rate to the world.

However – to most of the western democratic you can terminate calls for about 1 cent US. So there is no one stopping you to make a flat rate to those countries. Some companies do.
