Vista: Extreme Tech Answers, Upgrade or Clean Install?

As it turns out, Vista running as an upgrade to XP scores almost identical benchmarks to Vista as a clean install. What’s more, the system bloat and orphaned files typical of a Windows upgrade are almost nonexistent. This means that upgrading to Vista from XP should actually be quite a bit easier than from older OSes to XP was. If you’re indeed taking the Vista plunge, rest assured that the upgrade process should do the trick nicely, which means less hassle. And you’ll get to try out your huge new OS faster, too.

If only this were true! A Vista upgrade may not have as many problems with orphaned files or performance as previous upgrade versions, but god help you if something goes wrong during the process. You’ll have to re-install XP first to even try it again! Ditto for when that inevitable day comes that you need a new install down the line.

Just take a look at the comments early adopters are leaving for the Vista Upgrade version on Amazon, it is a nightmare.

Ohhhhhh SysAdmin: good point. Perhaps I should have added the trapdoor of “in theory”, yes? :-)

I was able to perform a clean install using my upgrade disc without having to worry about a previous windows instillation and it was smooth as butter. I haven’t tried upgrading a windows xp install though but I have heard it’s not as messy as upgrading to XP was.

I just purchased my 1st laptop that comes withn vista. I have now spent 6 hrs. online with a Dell rep who has taken control of my computer to try and fix a problem. The problem is that anything kept in my doucument folder and is attached to an email will not open. I have tried all 3 of my email accounts and nothing. I have tried keeping a document in ea. available format and Gmail can open one type…thats it. I was assigned a permanet Dell rep. to handle my needs and was advised to wait 10-12 days to see if an update will cure the problem. If not he has sent me instructions on reinstalling everything, which I never have done. The system comes with a restore thing but it didnt work….tried it 4 times. I have had Dells and no problems. Is this an issue due to VISTA? What a mess!
