I love my 360. It’s a great system and I feel confident that it will win the console war. There is a problem though. It’s the nosiest device in my room. When I’m sitting here playing Gears of War there are so many grinding sounds emitting from the unit that sometimes I wonder if it’s going to explode.
Recognizing that there is a problem, Microsoft is taking steps to rectify the issue. New consoles will feature the quieter VAD6038, manufactured by BenQ-LiteON-Phillips. The older Toshiba-Samsung and Hitachi-LG drives are on the outs.
Maybe I’ll have to go trade mine in.

Cool deal. My room mate just bought a 360 from a friend and he hooked it up yesterday. I was surprised at how loud it actually was. Sounded like someone was vacuuming in the other room trying to get a stain out of the carpet that just wouldn’t come out.
Are these new consoles going to be the ‘360 zephyr’ or is Microsoft just going to randomly switch to the new drives with current 360 production?
Damn… I just got mine back from the repair center.
Would be cool if you guys could follow up on this once the new ones are out, maybe there is a way to tell from looking at the serial number on the box or something like that to figure out what kind of drive is inside? I want to buy one soon but would like to make sure it has the silent drive and I’m not getting a console which has been sitting on the shelf for a while…
Yea, I’ll follow it up.
