Alan:
How dare you put down people who live in trailer homes!?!?

Many Katrina victims still live in FEMA provided trailers; are they stupid?

How about someone who grew up with less opportunity than you; does that make them stupid?

Who keeps CD's anymore anyway? I thought it was all MP3 and Ipod(video or otherwise) now, or are you too stupid to use new tools?

actually the metallic layer is not where the data is. The ink layer is what is modified by the laser... If the destruction method only destroys the reflective layer, I would bet it could be replaced, by someone determined enough. Thermite and a fireplace or clay enclosure would work handily on any cd/dvd collections...

I stick unwanted CD's and DVD's into my deskside paper shredder. It makes a lot of noise, but the disk is gone.

Wicked. I can't imagine any of us are going to have top-secret/life-threatening info on a cd that would warrant some psyocho cd reconstructive surgeon to put it back together when its broken in quarters anyways.

This is stupid. Either don't burn the stuff to DVD in the first place, or just break them by hand or microwave them (the few seconds it takes to kill a DVD isn't TOO likely to cause problems, though you do it at your own risk). If you need to buy a special DVD puncher, chances are you're an idiot.

Or you could put a label on the CD that would completely through them off your case something like "My neices 1st steps" or "Childhood Memories" then u take a disc and you put several very strong viruses on it (make sure they are set to autorun) and put "confidential imformation, keep secure" or "Bootlegged Jay-Z CD" so when they goto test it on one of their computers they will be busy trying to get rid of the viruses. they will prolly leave whatever disc said childhood memories there.

"or just use a normal hole punch?"

I tried that one time with my 3 hole punch and almost broke it. It's much easier to use a heavy duty scissors or shears.

Putting metallic objects in a microwave that results in sparks, arcing, or fire is damaging to the magentron - the part the generates the actual microwaves. You also run a great risk of starting a fire and buring down your trailer park "home". If you're stupid enough to get caught by the RIAA or put metallic objects in a microwave, you do live in a trailer park don't you? Scraping the underside of a DVD will not prevent the reading of the underlying data using special techniques. It's the upper reflective layer that is the most critical part of a DVD. Removing that is more effective but scraping off that top layer results in lots of tiny pieces of metallic mylar, which are a pain to clean up. The only totally effective method of destroying a DVD is to incinerate it. This applies to any media that you want to totally destroy. This is the approved DOD method for destroying all confidential media. Of course building a bonfire fire outdoors is not an option for most people, especially if living in a populated area. Of course that may be allowed in the open trash pit in some trailer parks. The next best method is a good shredder that is made for shredding CDs/DVDs. When a black car with tinted windows pulls up in front of your residence with several very large men wearing dark RIAA emblazoned blazers, you want to get rid of the evidence NOW. Building a fire, microwaving, or scraping really isn't viable. As for the boiling in oil suggestion - hahaha. Hey guys, could you cool your heels for about 45 minutes while I fire up my deep oil turkey fryer? I'd put my odds on a CD/DVD shredder that can obliterate a disk in seconds. My Fellows PS-77C shredder can atomize a CD/DVD in about 3 seconds.
