Steve Jobs’ iTunes dance [Salon]

  • A point about your comment that Cory Doctorow’s salon article is “all DRMed up.” It isn’t. It’s accessible to anyone who lets a brief interstitial ad play before it appears; once the ad runs you have a “day pass” to anything at Salon. That’s one of the ways Salon supports its journalism.

  • That article really shows how locked down apple is when it comes to media content. They know what they’re doing in chaining you up. That’s the main reason I never fell into a mac product. If you’re wondering what I use… iRiver Clix and WMP11 for a 20,000+ song collection

  • I’ve definitely been wary of this “future tax” on hardware purchases. I feel a little locked in to the iTunes/iPod “ecosystem” (er, not-unpleasant-jail?).

I wish they would open up Fairplay, to get rid othe so-called “tax.” I don’t like having my music locked-down. I read Steve’s essay last week (Thoughts on Music.) Sounded good enough — but I kept wondering why Apple couldn’t make a DRM system where they didn’t have to give up their “secrets.” Like, a system where licensees’ had their systems automatically updated over the web (luke Software Update — for DRM!)

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one.
