I found that you can run the "N" mode, but the SSID (i.e.e the name of the wireless network) needs to broadcast in order to connect. If you don't broadcast the SSID in an effort to hide the wireless network, you won't connect to XBox Live. So leave that SSID available to be seen, change it something more random, and use the WPA/WPA-2 encryption scheme with "N" left on.
