5 Reasons Why The AppleTV Rules And Sucks

finally shipping after a month of nail-biting anticipation and most people are excited while others are attempting to justify some reason to order it. I’m still on the fence about shelling out $300, but Gadget Lab’s “5 Reasons Why AppleTV Rules, 5 Reasons Why it Sucks” tells it like it is and backs up some of the reasoning why I think it will change home entertainment. One reason why it rules is that it’s the only way to stream iTunes content to your TV…duh! One reason it sucks is quite simple and a huge part of why I’m on the fence — no cables and we’re expected to pay $300. Hmmmm. Anyways, check it out and see where you stand.

The article made some valid statements. I personally found the 3rd one interesting. If it really does sport 256 megs of ram and a Pentium M CPU… Why is its sole purpose being a streaming device?
What I don’t like is that it is too dependent on the PC that it syncs with. It would be cool if you could access a striped down version of the iTunes store on it and directly download movies , music, podcasts, etc.
It’s a nifty little device though, I’m glad that Apple is expanding its market penetration by releasing new devices. (maybe an Apple TV next?). However, I personally don’t think apple knows quite what their doing yet in the TV and mobile phone markets just yet. So I’d say wait a while before buying anything.

“Oh and there is one more thing…” 40 Gigabytes? This definitely wont be a solution for high def (or any def) content on your big screen TV. Unless you want to stream-erase-stream-erase. And with large high-def movies that is definitly going to be a pain.

The big “but” is it streams, but not from the net, rather only from Itunes. There is much free content out there and according to Mossberg (where everyone should get all their news from) it won’t grab it for you.
Just about every primetime tv show (Lost etc.) is available for download after the orig. air.
How about a portal that shows everything that can stream, giving you plenty of choices, not just pay to play?
I don’t think pay per download or pay for time (like netflix download service) is going to be the model that works…

Ish don’t think so
No cable tuner?
and whats this crap about the streaming your iTunes content to your TV?
why not copy it to your Ipod and pull the A/V cable switch-a-roo?
there you go. you can watch your Desprate Housewives on the big screen.
40 gigs storage isn’t much if this is suppose to be A/V center of your house
and by buying one, you are supporting a DRM market place, i don’t care what Jobs says

I’m mostly in the pro corner when it comes to Apple TV. The product sounds great. With so many iTunes users out there now being able to get their content to the TV it will really have an impact on home entertainment. The “old style” of TV is very much on the outer and products such as Apple’s TV are helping usher in a new era.

Ringo, I agree but paying for content works too. Like I said, there is plenty free content ON the itunes store. Like podcasts and shows. The problem is you can’t connect to the iTunes store, only to your iTunes library…

I wish someone could give me 5 valid reasons a person, especially one who uses the English language to earn a living, would follow the word “reasons” with the word “why”. Hint: if you even try, you will come up 5 reasons short. And for such an error of grammar to be used twice in one title and to escape the attention of editors, well — that’s just sad.
