Over the past few months, rumors of a “Sidekick 2.5″ were flying about. I took notice and after a few weeks, checked with some of my sources to confirm. Sure enough, a “Sidekick 2.5″ was in the works as a trimmed-down alternative to the Sidekick 3. Today I was leaked a picture of the device, which you see above in a color pattern known as “ugly”. Though it’s not the prettiest device, the Sidekick ID (yes, that’s it’s name) comes with all the features you love on your SK3, just without all the crap.
So what’s in a name? The Sidekick ID is trimmed down to showcase communication features rather than the extra crap that’s usually included. You won’t find some of the following features on the Sidekick ID: Bluetooth, MP3 Player, digital camera, or a microSD slot.
What you will find on the Sidekick ID though is probably quite welcome to most people. An IM client with AIM, Yahoo!, and MSN, e-mail client, web browser, and, of course, a phone are all part of the Sidekick ID’s core. An updated Danger OS and new menu style will of course be present, but don’t expect a radical new design change or anything like that. Of course, T-Mobile’s myFaves will be an integral part of the Sidekick ID.
Navigation will include a trackball like the Sidekick 3/Tempest arcade machine, but it’s currently unknown if the d-pad will make its way to the Sidekick ID’s final design. Since all we have a picture taken from a T-Mobile employee, it’s hard to gauge if the left-hand side will be a speaker or d-pad. Perhaps both? It’s a possibility, but judging by the looks of it, I’d say a speaker.
The fan-favorite keypad design will stay with the Sidekick ID, allowing you to text and IM to your heart’s content. The display will still flip out and make a ridiculously loud sound so everyone knows you’re using a Sidekick. Don’t worry. You’re still special to us.
So with most of the specs and features covered, two questions remain: “How much will it cost me and when will it be available?”

The Sidekick ID will drop in Q2 this year, most likely during the summer and will cost less than the Sidekick 3. I’ve heard from two sources that a $149.99 price point is being considered to keep it affordable and to make it available to the masses. I mean let’s face it. T-Mobile totally made a killing releasing the Sidekick 3 and making people pay $300 with a 2-year contract. Sure they can leave their contracts now, but T-Mobile still made decent buck.
However, with more core features and less gimmicky crap like an MP3 player, the Sidekick ID has the chance to become one of the hottest communication devices of the summer. Think of it as a Blackberry for non-professionals who still want to keep in touch with friends, family, and co-workers while on the go.
Anyways, that’s it. That’s the dope on the Sidekick ID. It’s not called the “Sidekick 2.5″, it is lacking certain features, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing in this case, and it’s due out this summer. Enjoy.

t-mobile doesn’t make money on phones bought out right. they make plenty on the plans. the prices given on the t-mobile website are almost a break even price. i work for an indirect dealer and if we charged those prices without a contract, we either break even, for most phones, or lose money. i promise that most prices on t-mobile.com are reasonable and you will get your money’s worth.
also, let me clarify something about the camera on the sidekick. the camera on the sidekick does not suck. it’s the screen quality. 1.3 megapixel is plenty to take decent resolution pictures. no matter how nice the picture quality is, the sidekick is still on a VGA screen.
yes, the sidekick iD was make specifically for those who don’t want to spend so much money on the sidekick, but want to take advantage of the great messaging and data plan. also, you can NOT compare the dash to the sidekick. the sidekick was made for kids for their aim and texting. the dash was made for business use. they are both made for different application. as i always say to my customers: if you don’t need it, don’t spend the extra money on it.

I went to a tmobile store today to check about my juicy sk2 and one of the guys working there brought it out to show me. I am definitely getting this phone. And the bumper looking thingys are changeable. So ur not stuck to the the ugly white and grey alone (even tho it doesn’t make it all THAT better). And its also wayyyyy louder than the sk2/3. The menu looks just like the sk3 but it feels a little lighter in my hand. (Maybe that was just my excitement tho). But ne way I personally think its something to look forward to. And the price is unBeLiEvABLe!!!!

I just ordered my SKiD. I’m so excited for it. I have an ipod, and am getting a digicam, so those features don’t matter. I think it looks cute, not ugly. I have a shxtty SK2 right now, so, this is a great/cheap upgrade for me. =]

I was gonna buy it, but then i saw that it didn’t have a camera attach, so now i doubt i’ll get it…… but other then that i like the none camera phone
The SKID came out and I spent a while contemplating on whether to get rid of my SK3 for the SKID. I went ahead and went with the SKID and am happier with it. Reason for this being the following: I didn’t use the horrible camera on the SK3 nor the music player or bluetooth, so I figured the SKID was obviously the phone for me. If, however, you do use these multi media apps, the SKID is NOT the phone for you. I have a 7.0 mega pixel camera, and don’t use music players, so I don’t need these sub par features on a phone. That leaves this phone with all the communication and organizer apps (I use every single one of the apps on my SKID now).
Everything is pretty much the same (minus the multi media apps), except that the buttons on the SKID have DEFINITELY improved. Instead of being the cheap, Halloween-themed black and orange color, they’re white and blue – a MUCH better look. I purchased a white color kit for my phone and honestly, it’s very attractive and professional looking.
I would highly recommend this phone to anyone in any age group out there, not only preteens/teens. If you’re always on the go, and need an extreme communication gadget with an appointment app for your clients and to do app, this is the phone for you. It’s definitely not a Blackberry or Palm though, so if you need an intense business phone with more than the appointment and to-do functions, this is not the phone for you.

i think its a good idea… the only differance is … the ID doesn’t have a camera…. and if you ask me, the sidekick series never had any good pictures to begin with… so i think it will do just fine..

so i went into the t-mobile store today to check out SK3 and i realized WOW there is a sidekick ID. I loved the fact that its changeable and i really do not need the camera since i do have a digital camera. Plus i heard that the SK3 digital camera is crappy anyway. I really don’t need the Mp3 player because i’ll be damned if i walk around the mall with my sk3 playing and everyone is looking at me like “you dumb ass” as much as i love Mp3 players i am just not the type to “walk out in public” with one. But i think the phone is very nice. It is 149.00 with a 50.00 mail in rebate which makes the phone 99.99. I will be going back to the store in 2 hours to buy the Sidekick Id.
Oh yes and to those who are saying that if you buy this phone you are considered broke… Well the Sidekick 3 is now 200.00 with a mail in rebate. Which means that you are paying for a digitalcamera and a mp3 player with 100.00 and 9/10 you really won’t use either one of them. I already have a 300.00 camera why get a CAMERA PHONE that i know i won’t use and plus i will have my other phone which is a pebble. I have only had that for about 3 months. And i have only used the camera 4 times. And it wasnt to take pictures of myself.
