Wii Sales Destroying The PS3’s
- March 21st, 2007

Since it’s release, the rampant buying spree that has consumed the Nintendo Wii is starting to really make a mark on the video game industry. The Wii is now almost 2-to-1 in terms of sales compared to the PS3. Like I mentioned the other day, the PS3 only sold 127k units during February as opposed to the 335k Nintendo Wiis that were sold.
This kind of dominance in a market is what will ultimately turn the PS3 into a niche product. Sure there’s some people who just don’t want to buy a PS3, but it’s also an expensive product that a great deal of people just can’t afford. 1.1 million PS3s have been sold since launch and the Wii has sold 1.9 million. That’s less than a million in difference and with such a vastly different price point between the two consoles, it’s also not too shabby for Sony. But with 2007 still ahead of us and loads of good games for both consoles coming out, I think by Q1 of 2008 we’ll be able to tell who our winner is in the stupidest battle ever: The Console Wars.

My gf just got a Wii — I’ve had a PS3 since January. My conclusion: There is just simply nothing that can compare with the *22nd-century* gaming and multimedia experience the PS3 offers. The Wii is a Gamecube with a controller that takes A LOT of getting used to. It took me about 5 minutes to learn how to fly with six-axis control in Blazing Angels on the PS3. In contrast, you may say I need a purple pill, but after 3 hours of Zelda, I still have not mastered the Wii-sword.

This news comes as no surprise at all. I have a wii but have no plans to get a PS3. At $700 (here in Canada) the PS3 is ridiculously overpriced. I would much rather go with a 360 and save money than buy a PS3. The lack of games, price and lack of exlusives (not even Devil Must Cry anymore is exclusive to PS3) make the new Playstation quite unappealing. The game situation is only going to get worse as developers jump off the sinking vessel that is PS3.

Personally, it took me literally no time at all to master the wii. if you can’t do it, you must be retarded. and in regards to the article: are those numbers just in one country? cuz nexgenwars.com says the wii has sold over 5 mill worldwide….the ps3 selling about 1.5 mill

Amen my friend! Anyone out there who is truly concerned about quality, power, future and best hardware and graphics, Blu-ray HD player for high end games and movies, on and on you would hands down buy the PS-3. It is a true Multimedia machine.
I also bought the Wii for my daughter, and the Wii has a fun factor but doesn’t hold a candle to the PS3. So anyone who is serious about the best gear and the future would know to buy the PS3. Yes I not talking out my a– since I have both systems.
I read these news reports that try to pull the PS3 down and laugh. They tried the same thing with the PS2, and the PS2 still out sells the competition and Sony has always focused on longevity not instant here and gone tomorrow…

What is wrong with every gamer in the world? You don’t have to be for the wii or ps3 and against the other. I own just a wii, not because of preference, but just because of cost, and the sad thing is, I am actually the one getting ripped off! PS3 owners are getting the best deal hands down, and anyone who says they aren’t are blinded by their own obsessions.
This is sort of what happened last time around, when the gamecube was starting to get a bad name. Although it had its loyal fans, the majority passed on it for reason unknown to me. After it was all said and done, the gamecube had just as many good games, if not more, than the ps2 and xbox. I’m sure this will be the case with the ps3 as well.

BP you sound like a shill for Sony. I wonder if Sony hires people to troll message boards and comment sections to insert artificial praise. The PS3 currently has no compelling games so I have no idea what you’re raving about. The PS2 won out because of its massive developer support and exclusive games. PS3 is currently losing developer support and its exclusives. Just the other day Capcom announced DMC4 would go multi-platform. It really isn’t looking that great for them.

I recently bought a Wii and had great fun with it…for about a month. It’s great when playing it with your mates, but just didn’t do it for me with single player games, so I sold it. I’ve ordered a PS3 and genuinely believe I’m going to get a lot more use out of it as a whole package and not just a games machine. I’ve also got a 360 and will certainly be keeping that as well…I’m loving the next generation!

I had a PS3 and it was god awful. The sixaxis was awkward and poorly implemented, the launch games were abysmal except for Resistance: Fall of Man, and the damn thing kept crashing before it finally bricked out. $600 almost down the drain. Thankfully, I was able to haggle for a refund. Thank God for my Wii. It’s a so much better deal. PS3 dosen’t hold a candle to it.

I’m glad to see that the Wii looks like it may win out, it was sad the way the gamecube went last gen. PS3 is seen as a machine for geeks whereas the Wii is slowly turning videogames to more people as it’s seen as fresh and fun….I like the way Nintendo has gone about things this generation and hope they can keep it up.

I think the PS3 will sell just fine once they get some decent games for it. Like, a dozen or so. Though dropping the price would certainly help.

The PS3 is good for the money, but its just too earlier for it. its really what should be in the generation after this. Realistic prices do help, and graphics was never a major burner. everyone keeps saying that ps3 is a great computer… i beg to differ, it does not have the same power as a computer in its ability to process huge amounts of equations. please also note that the GTX 8800 from Nvidia ( $800 Au) plus a reasonable power sup ( $120) …provided you have a motherboard also , outpreforms the ps3 several times. plus it has more complex particle, lighting and smartshading systems. in Australia the ps3 is around (soon to be released) $1000, id rather upgrade my computer which seems to be gaining a much larger catalogue of games than the ps3. As for audiance, many of you will find that you are graphics hungry….so you rush to a ps3….but many of us who have played all types of games and have seen what people can do with RCG (real time computer graphics) want to see a more fun element. both systems have different strong points wii = fun , ps3 =graphics. don’t put the other down using the controller as an excuse when its really the graphics which is frustrating you. Even then the ps3 has a very small market
The market for graphics console gaming is taken mostly by the xbox 360, it doesn’t have glitches nor temperature problems anymore. In australia the concern is when we get heat waves of 40 + degrees celcius. given the current statistics for the machine it should not work. but sony should have some lateral thinkers to have changed it in australia. the next thing is, that by the time that it actually warrents having blue ray ( most market predictions say about 1.5 yrs) the prediction for computer and standard blue ray drives are to be around the $200 - $250 range. The ps3 currently only support basic playback of blu-ray discs. Concidering the size and the new media format (h264), it currently can only accomplish basic playback. it is predicted that the blu-ray discs will have a much higher level of interactivity that only newer blu-ray devices will compatalize with. the ps3’s drive whilst very good is locked in to only have the features that are currently available on the market, software upgrades would be very difficult to accomplish since its processing is much different from a computers ( computer processing system is better for h264 - much faster). for example, high speed skipping or playback variations.
Whilst the wii cannot do this, the fun is only limited by the games. people still play tetris because its fun, they still play pong cause its fun….fun does not have technology factor involved thus it does not rely on always keeping up to date like the ps3.
Either way, the xbox 360, ps3 and wii are all good machines in their own right. the xbox 360 and wii aim for a much larger market than the ps3 which was not really sony’s aim. But this is the case due to the sales numbers, no console that has had such large sales figures has ever failed in history, and the xbox 360 has already got a huge stronghold on the market. ps3 requires the amount of consoles that they predicted or else sony will loose alot of money and the game creators will loose interest since game production costs for a sony game is above the millions easily ( maybe billions….not sure) but even activision and EA are not satisfied with the sales of the console at the moment for them to actually gain profit from their games…. lets just hope it all works out.

Wii, i want one yeah but just imagine how much better it could of been if it had a powerful GPU. I mean yeah it’s fun but graphics is part of the next gen era, and nintendo made a mistake their. Sure its selling alot but why? Well of course becuase it’s the cheapest console right now. PS3 i want one now just for two main reasons, 1. HD DVD i love, but it isn’t really looking like it has a future, and blu-ray truely does have less pic quality but it’s better at least than a dvd unpconverter, so this being i would get a ps3 for blu-ray. 2. of course for MGS4! Other than these two reasons i would never get it for 600 buckaroos. Xbox 360 right now is my favorite, the graphics are beautiful running on just components and i like my hd dvd add on. Gears of War is the shit! Halo 3 is supposed to be even better, everything will be realtime, the lighting, physics, ai, depth in field, draw distance, HDR lighting. etc. I guess well have to see. Oh and IF they do make this new xbox 360 elite, i will for sure get that.

lawl ps3 isnt going to last, sony spent sooooo much money and sooo much time into the cell processor that was supposed to be the processor AND the graphics card, well guess wat they fucked up and ran to nVidia so now its got the newest nvidia cards that well if u know anything bout pc games will be shit in like 5 years waaay b4 sony’s bullshit prediction of 10+ years and with its loss of exclusives its lacking backing of movie studios for blu ray and the fact that even if it SOMEHOW won the format war it wont matter cuz as soon as it does digital downloads will rule, while sony spent all that money and time on blu ray and the ps3.
THE ps3 is dead, and sony’s bull wont bring it back

wnen i was a gamer the console with the best games was considered good and that usually meant more media cap how can anyone say something about Wii or Xbox 360 if PS3 is the only console with next-gen media storage does anyone remember N64 a nice machine with almost the same games as PS but the lack of media space made them inferior to PS games same story here soon when PS3 games start to use Blu-ray Discs cap we’ll see which of this consoles is the best

PS3 and next-gen graphics will always have its place in geekdom. But alot of folks my age are buying Wii’s for the same two reasons I did - it’s cheaper and it helps my kids put away the gameboy ds and do something a bit more active. Their are millions of people just like me out there. I would guess most people reading this got their first systems from mom and dad.

The Wii: awesome product with more processing power than it’s being given credit for. Wait a year to see what the next run of games look like to judge it before calling it a GC redux. I’ll admit Zelda could have looked better, but it DID look GOOD and was fun. that’s all I want.
PS3: I really want one, not for blu ray, but for the specs. I’m sure if Sony can find a way to lessen the price as manufacturing goes on, more folks will buy it. I don’t see it catching up to the Wii if it keeps going the way it is, but I really don’t see how it could be seen as a failure this soon into it’s run.
I’m pretty sure your sales numbers are for the U.S., correct? They sound right for domestic figures. But worldwide, the Wii is outselling the PS3 over 3 to one, and it’s because it appeals to more people, and that’s just the way it’s turning out.
And interestingly enough, when I first bought the Wii, I got Wii sports, Zelda and Splinter Cell RA. Splinter Cell was a joke compared to the Xbox 360 version ( I actually felt ripped off…BIG time ), Zelda was honestly one of the best games I’ve ever played, and Wii sports was kinda…meh.
The reason I didnt care about Wii sports was the fact that I thought the games other than Tennis were waaayyy too simple, and that the controls on Tennis weren’t too responsive. So I put it down.
Last night ( just last night, matter of fact ), I picked up the OWNERS MANUEL and read how to hit the ball ( I was using the front of the wiimote for right and left swinging instead of using both sides like a tennis racket.
I’m now going freaking gaga over the Tennis aspect of Wii sports and think it’s one of the most flipping amazing play control schemes I’ve ever seen.
I say that last bit to point out that the Wii DOES take alot of getting used to. Little things that most people wouldn’t even think of make big differences in how you hit the ball. Where I was seeing the Wiimote as merely a mouse or lightgun substitute, I now see some definite real possibilities for how smart programmers can use it.
When all is said and done, though I’m a Wii owner, I wouldn’t pass up the opprotunity for the PS3 or the Xbox 360 to be in my home. They’re just a BIT too expensive for ME right now.
Things change. Sales figures fluctuate. Game systems ( and companies ) come and go. But good on Nintendo for giving us something new.

Well yes the PS3 costs more, but thats because of the Blu Ray. 360 you have to buy the HD DVD piece seperately. Also, you can only use Microsoft brand Hard Drives with it (ones made just for the X-box). The PS3 you can buy any brand of Hard Drive you want,as long as it is the right type of Hard Drive. The Wii is cool, but its still somewhat in short supply (where I live at least). I am getting a PS3 either today or tomorrow. Gonna get a Wii as well, but not until next year at least (I allready have a Gamecube & shit how much can you play at one time)? In part,I bought the PS3 for upcoming games like TNA Impact,Soul Calibur 4,and so on. (While these games are not going to be exclusive titles…….they will by far be among the best on the PS3.)

The Wii is just pure fun. I was stunned as I watched my friends dad get excited at the Wii Sports games and insisted that the family go purchase more games the next day. The PS3, while having tons of new features, is not something that most people will purchase. The Blu-Ray technology might not be around in a year or two (remember Sony Betamax and the VCR war?). Also, the gaming may be “superior” in terms of graphics, but not in involvement. Most people who have $600 to spend on entertainment have no interest in the games for the PS3. The “hardcore gamers” are a limited market. Nintendo is genius because they aren’t limiting themselves to a smaller market. Did anyone mention that the Wii is actually profitable. The Wii will be around for a long time to come - it’s amazing how it’s being received. Months after release, it’s still impossible to find one unless you are lucky. The PS3 makes me think of high school boys sitting in a basement for hours playing shooter games. The Wii is something that, no matter who is visiting your house, you want to show them and get them involved.

I’m a game developer (software engineer.) I’ve been in the business for 24 years. Here’s the real scoop about the new consoles: XBox 360 has very similar graphics and processing capabilities to the PS3, but it has TWICE the memory. The 360 has 512 MB of ram, the PS3 has 256. It is a major hassle to have to “dumb down” a game to make it fit on PS3. PS3 has some great features and is very powerful, but Sony made a huge blunder when they only included 256 MB of ram. The price of a 360 is also much more reasonable. The Wii is very fun and the controller is an awesome advance in technology, but it doesn’t come close to the 360 or PS3 in terms of memory, processing power and graphics capability. That said, the fun factor should not be dismissed. I’ve had more fun playing games on the WIi with my kids than any other machine, ever. Bottom line: If I want a good powerful, high-end system, I would choose the 360, hands-down, no question. If I want a blue-ray DVD player, I’d choose the PS3. If I want a fun, inexpensive machine that’s great for kids and parties, I’d choose the Wii. They all have benefits, but I think Sony really blew it with the PS3.

Totally right
Thats why Nintendo is bringing the old games to the system as well, almost instantly giving gamers a huge wealth of games and choice for a lot less than the price of a new game, but also it will appeal to parents who played those games 10, 15 or more years ago. They took a risk and decided that to refresh the industry was a good idea as opposed to saturating the market with ever more powerful consoles, the sales figures are so high because that strategy has shown the huge niche demand for change

Blu-ray is dead now that Walmart is endorsing HDDVD, and the PS3 is ridiculous, its more expensive than a new computer, only without a usable operating system. The Wii is a new concept that actually helps kids move more than their fingers while playing it, which coupled with its cheap price will dominate the PS3. PS2 was better than gamecube and Xbox, but the Wii took a step in a different direction while the PS3 slapped a soon to be useless DVD format player and some higher specs to the PS2, along with an outrageous price tag. The PS3 might have been graphics, and it may be easier to play, but the Wii is and will continue to dominate the market.

this is the year that i must say the wii is the great console to date. though i’m a sony ps fan myself they really did screwed up pretty bad. sony tends to go with an ass kicking format, like in the 70’s where they use betamax against vhs formats well everyone knows who won, and they did it again with the loser umd crap. anyone thinks that bluray will suffer the same fate i think i’ll wait next year its anyones ballgame for now. but i was really impressed by nintendo’s wii, and i’m thinking of getting one this summer.

That is sad you can’t master the Wii sord on Zelda considering all you do is move the controller like you were swinging a sword. Its sad my five year old nephew picked it up and could play it fine. Then 10 minutes later my 70 year old grandma could pick it up and play. Just face it. The Wii was built for everyone and is blowing PS3 away in the console wars. Nintendo has always had classic hits that you can play years from now and innovation way ahead of its time. You can get good graphics on any electronic but you cant get great game play that will last for years to come on just any system.

I’m stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi. In my hall, until last week, we had Wiis, PS3s, and 360s. This week we have one less PS3 since that console was traded in for a Wii. No word of lie 4 out of 5 times we end up gathering together in one of the Wii rooms. The Wii controls sure are tough to get used to…. if you have the motor skills of a six month old. The multiplayer with the Wii is unmatched. We’ve had night long Mario Party matches.. even the Brain Academy gets a lot of play! If we get Wii Sports in.. there is no stopping us.
As far as graphics go, come on… unless you have high def and all that good stuff… the PS3 doesn’t look all that much different than a PS2 anyway.
Oh, Zelda rules. Hooah!
