One Things For sure instead of spending a $1000 on a 2TB external i would rather buy 4 external 500gb harddrives…it takes up more space but you can switch them out when you need another and your saving a couple of hundred bucks

I have the 1tb (500×2) model, and it’s painfully slow, clocking in at under 12 MBs over gigabit/cat6 LAN, and that was moving 300g of ISO’s.

I’ve done some digging, it looks like the myshare is a NAS not an external hard drive.
Compare to the NAS you mentioned it is a bargain ($440 for 1TB)!!

I am wondering where you got the $1200 price from Dell. I just went to their website and under network storage it says $1150 is a starting price and that was for 2 x 80 GB drives. If you upgrade to 2 x 500 GB hard drives, that knocks the cheapest server up to $1800.

Also, I looked at desktops and to buy a barebone desktop with one 500 GB drive, it costs $650. So, I am not sure where you are seeing the pricing from Dell.

I have been shopping for a NAS for about three months and I was looking at a Buffalo Terastation for a long time. Typically about $750 for 1 TB. But that was a little bit more then I wanted to pay because I do not need hot-swappable drives. Thus, I started looking at dual drive products like WD, Maxtor and D-Link. I also looked at single network drives from Lacie.

I found that the dual drive NAS is the best feature set and capacity for the $$$. So, I dug a little deeper and decided to buy the myshare when I found it on Newegg for $440 and some change for shipping.

I installed it and it only took me a couple of minutes. Thus, I am pleased with my purchase.

If you could point out a better NAS, price per GB with similar features, I would like to hear about it.

Not impressed, there are already 1TB, 1.28TB and 1.5TB external hard drive solutions for cheaper then what these models will go for. Not to mention that for $1200 you should be able to pick up an NAS device from the Dell outlet that would provide more secure storage then just a simple raid array.

Nicholas, since you didn’t add any price indicator or estimate I did some digging, and it looks like the 2TB monster will not go easy on your wallet. Since it’s not available yet here the prices for the smaller versions (prices from PC Connection, CDW was more expensive and only had the 500 GB model):

500 GB: $399
1 TB: $499
1.5 TB: $899
2 TB: $1199 (?) *

* Model not available yet, this is my guess based on simple math. The final price is probably much higher, given that the 1.5 TB model is almost twice as expensive as the 1 TB model.
