Geek Two: Kira Arnold, retail manager

Items: iPod, HP Omnibook 6100, T-Mobile MDA, Pabst

Matt: Tell us what’s in your bag and what you use it for?

Kira: I use the HP Laptop when I’m at the coffee shop to read trashy blogs. It’s what laptops are for. I just got my iPod last year and Love it, I ride the bus a lot so that’s what that’s for. I have the MDA because I’m thinking management like, and it’s handy to have the calender and email. I got it for $50 last summer on Amazon, good deal dude! It’s really good for MySpace, too. And it’s a decent digital camera.

Matt: So what else is in the bag?

Kira: A beer!

Matt: Can I have it?

Kira: No you brought your own I saw you.

Matt: Jerk. Do you have any porn on your iPod?

Kira: No! Quiet, I’m on the phone with my dad!

Matt: I can wait. Now is there any porn on your iPod? I have “One Night in Paris” if you’d like.

Kira: No, I don’t want any porn. Thank you, though.

Matt: Whatevs, snob. You totally have porn on your iPod.

  • Is that all they carry, damn I must be an uber geek, I have to carry everything,
I have a Motion LE1600, an ipod 80 Gig Video, a Black Zune, Jabra BT8010 bluetooth stero headphones, a TMobile Dash (HTC S620) a PSP for some nice gaming in public, a Zyxel WiFi SIP for those never ending long distance calls, and thats just about 10 percent of whats actually in the laptop case.

Maybe do a story on the average IT guys daily carry items

  • When I travel I carry -
    Dell Inspiron 1405E
    Ziplink ethernet cable
    Generic mini optical mouse
    Mini mousepad
    Wireless presentation controller
    Samsung Blackjack
    Sony PSP
    Logitech Bluetooth Phone Headset
MioTech Mio 269 GPS navigation unit
    Panasonic Noise canceling headphones
    Panasonic AV20 camera/mp3 player
    SOG powerlock multitool

  • I guess I’ll throw in my two cents:
    MacBook w/ WaterField sleeve
    30GB iPod Photo
Able Planet Clear Harmony Noise Canceling Headphones
    USBCell Double AA Batteries
    Sidekick 3
    Blackberry 8703e
    Samsung WEP-200 Bluetooth Headset
    Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital ELPH
Crumpler Barney Rustle Blanket (I need a bigger bag now)

  • I know my selection’s a little odd – I don’t have either an iPod or a fancier phone, and as a student, the less expensive, the better.

    - On a usual day -
    Dell Axim 51v + 2 GB SD
ThinkOutside IR Keyboard – I know, I could use BT, but it’s left over from my older PDA. It also does the job reasonably well, without being almost twice as expensive. IR also doesn’t noticeably drain the battery
Ye Olde Cell Phone – Which needs to be changed, as at the moment it doesn’t ring very well.

In smaller bags – my aunt brought me a set from Shanghai, consisting of five rather skinny zippered bags, perfect for storing bits and pieces. I’ve since found these in Singapore for about $3 a set, but I don’t know where they can be found in the US.
Headphones from a 100 Yen store – If they are misplaced/lost, I can replace them easily enough… well, until I stop going to Tokyo every six months.
    Spare Battery for Axim
SD card case (from CVS) with: 2 GB card (camera), 512 MB (mp3s), 256 MB (documents). 128 MB (spare)
SD USB reader w/MP3 playback – I don’t listen to music as often, but it’s nice to have it available – it can play files in the root of the SD card, though not in folders, to my annoyance. This charges via USB, and lasts for about 5 hours. It also works as a USB 2.0 card reader, handy for transferring files from my PDA to print.

    - In addition, in my Samsonite laptop bookbag –
The advantage of a laptop bookbag is that there’s a sleeve for your laptop built in. This one fits a 15 inch or my 13 inch widescreen.
Sony Vaio SZ110 – Dual Core, Dual Graphics = laptop love.
    Spare headphones
Retractable Ethernet Cable – I may replace mine, as mine’s not always reliable.
Konica Minolta Dimage X50 + Spare Battery – a smallish digital camera, though not so great for indoor shots
And my problem: more cables than I really would like to carry.

  • OK- I’ll geek away!

    –General–
HP D610 Laptop (had a wider screen one but it was a brick!)
    Palm T3
Motorola i670 Phone (Nextel- bare bones)
Combo Audio/Cell Phone Earphones with inline Mic
    Skype Mic and Earbud
Olympus Digital Camera (Takes SmartMedia Cards!)
Lexar USB Card Reader for SmartMedia

    –Personal Audio Gear–
    iPod Shuffle (podcasts only)
Sandisk Sansa E250 (Podsafe Music Network tunes only- for the podcasts)
Phillips 512mb USB mp3 player (a gift- exercise audio)

    – Podcast Gear–
Zoom H4 Field Recorder (Podcasting and Rehearsals- takes SD Cards!))
Portable Card reader for SD cards (USB Stick-size- manufacturer unknown)
Headset Mic (3 pin connector) for podcasting
TWO Sony ICD-SX46 Voice Recorders (you never know) with USB Capability

Wow. No wonder my back hurts all the time!

  • I’m a retro geek. Someone once said I’m a fine collector of obsolete items…but I love it when people get curious over the obsolete haha…

    -In my bag-
    30 gb ipod video:…okay not obsolete…yet.
Tapwave Zodiac: for all my emulation gaming needs + pda functionality
HP Jornada 728 handheld computer: I’m a student and I wrote half my papers on that thing, no way I’m trashing it now
    4 gb usb flash stick
    aaand
    A couple of SD cards
(No phone to speak of right now, though I’m in the market for a new one)
