Helpful ATV review, insightful prediction, clever Noonan pastiche. Would love to see you compare-and-contrast TV-out quality of: iPod Video, MacBook Pro, and ATV. Also, am curious if same podcast troubles apply to ATV–iPod Video and MacBook Pro on Front Row both are prone to confusing audio and video feeds. Does ATV do 5.1 or just stereo; if former, should vloggers start producing in 5.1? I knew a John Biggs at Purdue, lost touch and wonder, though I suspect yours is a popular name, wouldn’t happen to be you?

If you do upgrade the drive, drop the plugin from perian.org into /Library/Quicktime (username:frontrow password:frontrow) and get DiVX playback. Source: SomethingAwful

JP – Also agreed. But I’ve used my fair share of “streaming” devices, from an iPaq jukebox to a 360 downloading HD content, and everything takes time. If I can set and forget ffmpegX and come back for it later, I’m happy.

Great review. The simplicity this product offers is awesome — if all your diggie entertainment lives in iTunes. If not……..be prepared to spend a lot of time encoding.
