Hackers Hack Hacked Apple TV to Play DivX

What if I told you that somewhere on this island there’s a very small box that can play DivX video?

Clever clever hackers! Some clever folks have opened up their Apple TVs, taken out the hard drive, and installed an SSH client as well as some video playing codecs. The result? An Apple TV that plays DivX, albeit with some difficulty.

They’ve also discovered that the device runs a stripped down version of OS X, which is essentially BSD and Linux. Clearly, the hack isn’t for everyone, but it’s still great to see that the Apple TV is actually quite open and just waiting for hacks, hacks, and more hacks.

  • OMG, ROTFL :-)

The AppleTV is actually quite open? Hah! All you have to do is take out the hard drive, install it in your intel mac, do some occult incantations and tada! your appletv is now “open”. Until you do a software update that is, when all your hacks will be wiped out. Pah!

For open, see http://www.neurostechnology.com/ which does everything my appletv does (albeit not as screen-lickingly slickly), but is truly open. It plays every format I’ve thrown at it, browses my network for media files and I can plug any size usb drive into the un-crippled usb port. And guess what, it actually uses the external drive for storage.
