Microsoft has garnered a lot of press this week with the announcement of its Xbox 360 Elite. The updated console features HDMI inputs and an expanded 120GB hard drive. Its announcement, while not a surprise to anyone, warrants one obvious question, “What now Sony?”
The above FCC filing from earlier this month might hold some indication as to how Sony plans to respond to the 360 Elite. Michael Mowhertor at Kotaku believes that the letter could be indicative of an augmented PlayStation 3.
While it only states the presence of a larger 80GB hard drive, the new PS3 model (CECHE01) could have more under the hood than a larger hard drive. I’m not sure how plausible it is, but this constitutes as some of that food for thought everyone always seems to be hungry for.
And, of course, we’ll keep our eyes open for any new info to surface.
Sony Working On PS3 “Elite” Model? [Kotaku]

Adding a bigger hard drive to the PS3 would just make it more expensive wouldn’t it? thats one thing they don’t want to do. I believe the price of the PS3 is the biggest reason why they aren’t seeing the success that they anticipated.
A lot of people keep thinking that the PS3 will take off when this happen or that, thinking about the PS2’s success, but until they get the price down, they are going to continue to struggle…..The game lineup is indeed going to get better, but Halo 3 alone is huge enough that a lot of those PS3 game releases may not help much (may get buried in Halo’s hype) if its still $600 bucks. And thats gambling on the fact that another 360 game doesn’t surprise us and gain a big following
The only reason Sony would be bringing a larger hard drive to their box is because they’re on the eve of releaseing a download service that could potentially create interest for more storage space than is currently available in the 60GB model. It’s really the same reason MS is releasing the Elite. There’s really no new functionality in the Elite. An HDMI port on the back is nifty, and long overdue. Without an HD DVD player, though, I’m not sure how useful it really is (except in Press conferences when MS wants to tout their HD capability on a box that doesn’t put out a 1080i signal)

beyond the broken English you speak here, there are other problems. For starters, the PS2 still kicks MS’s ass in the states. The PS3 is kicking (currently, right this minute, not a thing Sony is hoping for but something that is actually happening right now) MS’s ass in Europe. The real question is, who will you return that Ferrari laptop too when MS wants it back, you shill.

Yes, it could have even MORE under the hood. It could have a car wash, or a tiger, or maybe even a chunk-o-gold. Why even waste the energy that had to be exerted by your fingers to type such a nonsensical statement?
