In a convoluted story involving beer, hard rock, and t-shirts, one man recounts his experience in Holland where Phil Harrison of Sony Entertainment’s Worldwide Studios stood up and tried to auction a PS3 for charity — and failed.
It seems there’s a band called Marillion and they’re big gamers. At a recent event, they introduced Harrison who proceeded to offer a PS3 for a minimum bid of 600 euro — more than $700. Cue crickets…
What next ensued was the one lowlight of an otherwise well-intentioned, and extremely excellent weekend. For several minutes Harrison attempted to cajole an entirely silent crowd of several thousand people into bidding for his console. Terribly, but somehow inevitably, the bidding never moved beyond Harrison’s starting price. Indeed, he became increasingly desperate as it grew clear that everyone just wanted him to go away, and nobody was going to indulge his tasteless attempt at publicity.
This actually sounds more like a misplaced effort at marketing to a bunch of folks who were already marketed out, but why is it that Sony always hits these ham-handed events whereas 360 and Nintendo either stay out the limelight completely or are greeted to waves of fanboy love? So strange.

ZING! OH SNAP!
It’s because Microsoft has created a viral marketing campaign by paying off bloggers with laptops, beer, money as well as paying off commenters. “Crunch Gear” is no doubt part of this viral campaign.
How much do you guys get? Or are you just victims/pawns of their viral campaign?
John,
You caught us. We’re being paid off with hookers, whiskey, and blow. I have fifteen laptops here in the house just waiting for the trashman simply because I have NO MORE ROOM FOR MY FREE MICROSOFT LAPTOPS!

this post by Vince is a bit of counter-psychology to throw you all off.
Americans like beer. Brits like whiskey. Microsoft needs to keep this difference in mind.
FUD viral microsoft boy
Man, I like me some whiskey as well.
‘can’t give it away’ that’s because no one wants to pay $600+ for a damn game machine. This is exactly one of the many reasons Wii is dominating the market. Sony should have dropped the bluray and sold a game machine.
Wow, how original, another anti-PS3, anti-Sony article.
Could you email me when you decide to do some balanced reporting? Like.. erm.. maybe reporting the same sort of BS for other companies?

whaaaaaah…
Seems to me that this is a damning enditement to the dutch! I mean, stone cold and silent at a CHARITY AUCTION!? the heartless bastards! ‘Harrison wanted free publicity…’ NO! REALLY!?! You’ll be telling me next that all the celebrities turn up for Red Nose Day (a british charity T.V. evening) because they ACTUALLY WANT TO HELP and not to push flagging carreers.. Of course it’s free publicity! That’s not the point! IT A FRIKKING CHARITY AUCTION!.. although, no-one mentions which charity.. Perhaps it was the Axis of Evil Found a Dictator dance… we’ll never know..
Marillion is still alive? Now that’s news.
Thank you Crunch Gear for this article :) Haven’t laughed like that in ages.
I’ve never owned Sony gear, loathed the PS series, never liked it and to hear this is, is sweet. Thanks guys. What’s your postal address, I’d like to send you guys some Malt Whiskey.
Cheers
First of all, I don’t give much credibility to this article as you say (one man recounts his experience in Holland) who is this mysterious man & do you check the credibility of a story before you publish it?
So you want us to believe that Microsoft & Nintendo always stay out of the limelight. I’d like to know what planet you have been living on, John, Microsoft didn’t exactly stay out of the limelight during the European launch, they made complete asses of themselves & they didn’t get where they are today by staying out of the limelight, quite the contrary.
Why do I think that no matter what Sony does, you would report it in a negative light, it’s ok to report the negative’s as long as you also report the positive’s & there have been many regarding the PS3. People must be so sick of reading the same old stuff day after day, is there anybody on the planet who doesn’t know that the Wii is ahead of the PS3 in sales? I doubt it & yet we see dozens of headlines every day stating that the PS3 is being slaughtered by the Wii.
The Truth is: There isn’t all that much difference in sales between the Wii, the Ps3 & the 360 at the moment. You would think some of these so called reporters could come up with something new, after all that’s what News is (something new)
Enough about the console – check out Marillion.com – you might suprise yourself
