As some have pointed out, this announcement is basically saying that online music won't be inferior versions of CD's. So, the market has corrected itself -- this isn't really a big advance, more like a reversion to the way things should have been from the start.

An argument can also be made that DRM (or DRM-free) isn't really the issue here. The music industry is missing another boat entirely: music licensing for User Generated Content. There's a good article on Media 3.0 about this, by Shelly Palmer:
<a href="http://advancedmediacommittee.typepad.com/emmyadvancedmedia/2007/04/drmfree_itunes_.html" rel="nofollow">DRM-Free iTunes - Did We Miss the Memo?</a>

Listening to music is an old model. The new model -- where the growth lies -- is in using music to create your own works.

Erm... we're talking about the same Fox news, right? With the shoddy reporting that makes me yell at the TV when I watch?

Hilariously, my soon-to-be-ex-roommate loves to yell at CNN for not being biased enough! But I hear ya loud and clear.

Besides, we know the REAL news is only found on Comedy Central. ;)

Many of us quietly put up with CNN's bias for years. Now that there's an alternative it's a bad thing?

Perhaps fair and balanced means not having a choice. After all, it's easier to hear all sides when there's only one side to be heard.
