Hi! I had many LAN partys, and my tip is to not use wireless keyboards or mice, at least not several of ´em. They might pick up the wrong signals. Btw It would have been nice if u had wrote something about using switches and all. Thanx.

Check out http://www.de-frag.us we are hosting a large lan party in November however we also have monthly fragcasts which discus a lot of lan party issues and concerns

Thanks for the write-up. It’s useful and I’ll use it as a checklist next time.

The first LAN I went to was near the end of last year with a couple of guys from our brother school, but have hosted three or four of my own since, with my sister and good friends from school. :) We have a nice big double-story house with large rooms which is perfect.

My mother is also planning to turn one of the store-rooms into a computer/TV lounge (and get more power points put in :) ), and is saying “We’ll put more desk space in here so that you can LAN when you want to…” :D

Just to let you know that girls LAN too! ;)

good general Info on holding a lan, may i point out that you don’t need managed network switches to make a lan happen as long as the switches or routers have enough ports you can plug cat5 into then your set for a lan, also 10/100 speed switches are fine for lans. some games have a hosted lag if not ona dedecated server so having one is a good idea

Hey, this thing about having the same OS with same software is crap
We used to play Quake on LAN here with Windows 95, 98 and Linux altogether, no prob!
He should really have spent more time discribing issues with the lack of tables (wich were by far the most limiting factor on our older lanparties…)

@John, lol 2142…. BF2…… Who the hell plays that bs anymore. Wake up, this was a good read, no need to glamorize one game that nobody plays. That would moronisize the whole thing.

@Peter, nobody uses headphones? Every lan I’ve been to people use the hp to respect others.

A mate of mine bought 6 old dells, put them in his office, its wicked!
Best bet is to look out for office clearouts! + the chairs and stuff =]
We had a well fast fugitsu as a server.. and bashed hte ROuter onto the net and got some kick ass gameing on!

Lol, good read. I wish I found this two years ago before we started having LAN parties. By now we have figured out all the problems and glitches and what we need to do to solve them :P

An excellent start. It would be nice to add tips and links to practical problems hosting games eg running BF2142 without having to login to ea. we had a patch for BF2 but not for 2142.

hey im hoping to have one n the future and i found these tips very helpful in certian aspect’s of setting it all up. nice work… found on digg [if hosted locally or on certian bandwith limitation's watch out digg effect.] i got 250k veiws on a stor i posted and my isp was so pissed i used apache they are asking me to leave
