The Sidekick ID: Don’t Call It a Comeback
The Sidekick line is an odd animal. It’s not smartphone nor is it a fashion phone, but it seems to straddle the line between the two so precariously that it becomes everything to everyone. I’ve used the SK3 since it came out and found it to be the best messaging phone I’ve ever used, bar none. Symbian, WinMo and Linux have nothing on Danger’s dead-simple OS and services and form factor.
The SK3 is big, ugly, and immensely practical, yet it is popular with almost every demographic. It’s the young-people’s Blackberry and the older person’s dumbed-down email phone. What, then, is the Sidekick ID. This streamlined messaging phone does almost everything the SK3 can do, with a few glaring exceptions, and is aimed squarely at the folks who can’t afford — or don’t want — an SK3. I’m certain this audience exists, but do they want the SK ID?

T-Mobile sent me the SK ID and I immediately cracked open the SK3 for a quick comparison. As expected, the SK ID has no camera or Bluetooth. Fair enough. The device is about as big as the SK3 with a smaller screen and it is considerably lighter and looks — but doesn’t feel — like a plastic toy, especially with the bumpers installed. These bumpers will eventually come in multiple colors and styles, making them more of an accessory than a structural element. Look for a video of the various bumpers later today.

In the box.
The SK ID costs $99 with a 2-year contract and comes gray covers and bumpers. Its removable plates cost about $20 per set and will be available online and from retailers when the phone hits the streets on April 25. As soon as I opened the box I was drawn to swap out the gray plates with a set of blue plates. While I originally doubted the value of this feature, it’s clear that everyone will want to do the same thing — that’s part of the SK ID’s charm. Like the beepers and Nokias of old, this thing is begging to be stuffed into a fancy case or clad in clear plastic.
The buttons are quite interesting. The SK ID still has a directional pad/earpiece on the left side of the phone and a small squirrel wheel. All of the other buttons are completely covered in flexible plastic. The screen is about 2.5-inches wide, much smaller than the SK3’s, and quite dim. The default theme, a blue style with the ubiquitous SK guy and girl, looks almost washed out. It’s clear that Sharp, Danger, and T-Mo took some liberties with the individual pieces of hardware that make up this phone to get the price below $99. This does not mean that it is cheap or flimsy — quite the opposite. This SK ID actually feels sturdier — and has a better hinge — than the SK3.

SUP LOL STFU
The keyboard is almost the same, with a bit more space between keys and a clearer font. The call and hang-up buttons are a bit close to each other, but otherwise the entire phone is solid.

If you have an SK3, you won’t want the SK ID. It’s not for you. At $99, this phone is priced for the same folks who might get a RAZR, but instead pick up a hot little messaging phone. The UI is exactly the same as the SK3’s. The only real difference is there is no camera or MP3 playback options. Instead, Danger has added a photo album feature that lets you move emailed photos to your album. It is also MyFaves compatible. There is also no memory-card slot nor is there a USB port. Big whoop, right? Trust me. I didn’t miss it.

Baby, Momma
N.B. I’ve been trying all morning to get SK service to pop up on the phone, to no avail (it takes 2-48 hours apparently), but it works with the standard Danger Web interface. Most of the features are off-loaded onto the network, so the SK ID holds almost no contacts or account information and instead downloads the lot from Danger’s servers.

Overall, I’m not disappointed by the SK ID, but I’m not amazed. It fits into a place between “standard” phones like the Motorola RIZR with limited messaging features and the high-end gear offered by T-Mobile and the rest of the carriers. Nothing, not even the Dash, is as easy to use out of the box as Danger’s OS. If you don’t expect to use Bluetooth or a camera — which I suspect knocks folks over driving age out of the running — then the SK ID is a great device. The ideal audience, then, is someone in junior high, and I have no trouble seeing the value of this phone with such a young and fickle audience. Older folks, stay away. There will be phones for you soon, or, if you want messaging without hassles, just get an SK3. If the SK ID is your style, I can recommend it without reservation.

IMO, it will not sell well with the teens because it’s missing a camera.

I think it will sell pretty good cuz it’s every parents’ dream to have it afforable for their teens. Or teen can now afford it with their tight budget. Also, I want to include Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community - SKID is cheap compare to SK3 and hopefully its battery can last bit longer when using power. I’m Deaf myself, I don’t want to use so much gadgets and stuff in SK3. I rather have a basic gadget that has great txting service.

Well, the reason why teens would like it.. is it’s because its affordable. The SK3 is still selling for what, $349 or $299 with a two year contract? This is only $99!!

I have a sk3 and I would definately not switch to a sk id but it is a good device for someone who already has a cell phone & is looking for a phone for strictly texting & instant messaging services.

The phone without a contract will probably be around 300 most likely.

im thinking more along the lines of 250. maybe even 200. considering its mainly a text messaging/web browsing phone. the subtraction of bluetooth, mp3 players, usb port, memory slot, camera, and EDGE significantly drops the price.

I like the Sidekick ID when I get the $250 since I already upgraded my phone to a RIZR and I want a more of a messaging phone I will get one. I have a Video iPod and a FujiFilm Digital Camera so I don’t need those features on the Sidekick 3. And my RIZR camera is much better than the Sidekick 3 camera anyway. I like the Blue on the Sidekick ID. I was gonna get the Dwayne Wade Sidekick 3 But I don’t like the shape of the Sidekick 3 its weird looking and long. I want one so bad its sad.

OMG this is a cool phone! I already bought myself an sk3 in like october but I like the look of this one a lot better and I’m only 14… but the faceplate changing thing is really cool I wish the sk3 did that…
I’m thinking about getting one myself..
But, it doesn’t have a camera or mp3, although I do have a iPod video and a poloroid digital camera…so its not a complete tragedy! :D

I recently called TMOBILE about the price of the phone without a contract, due to me buying the Tmobile dash the day it came out. Tmobile has said that the SK id will be around 300.
I bought the SK3 the day it came out and the reason I got rid of it was due to the dash being slimmer and a bigger screen. NOW, that I have the dash- I’ve realized that was a BAD switch. The dash doesn’t allow fast instant messaging, and the email feature was so hard to figure out, I just ignore it.
I’m thanking all-messaging-gods that tmobile made the SK i.d. - I’ve been wanting one of the limited sidekicks due to the colors being different, and now that this sidekick i.d. came out, I def. want one.
I have a digital camera, and I have an ipod, and I paied for both so I’d rather use both of those than have it on my Phone to waste battery.
I think this sidekick i.d. is a great idea.
Maybe not so much the price of it without a contract, but a great idea.

Well, I work for T-Mobile, and as far as I know there is no concrete pricing set for the SideKick iD without a contract. You are absolutely correct in the pricing for a two year contract, however the price without a contract have not be specified. We’ll just have to wait until Wednesday, April 25th, 2007 to get that info. It really sux that even an employee doesn’t have the scoop on that info.

yah i work at a t mobile store too and i havn’t heard anything about a price without contract. I have a dash and i love it. The only thing i dislike about it is the instant messaging lags. I hate it but i can’t do anything about it. This sidekick iD is a great idea and i think I’m going to get one prepaid. I’m going to guess the phone should be around $249 without a contract. But i get a discount =]]

The sidekick Id is ONLY $150.00 with a $50.00 mail in rebate for a 2 year contract thus case and point making it a whooping $100.00. And since so many people complain about the Bluetooth, camera, and battery life w/ the 3, the ID took care of this by eliminating them and giving you a better battery life. Just check it out on http://www.phonescoop.com

theres all this talk about cameras on phones. i have a sidekick 2 right now and ive had phones with cameras in the past aside from the SK2 and ive HATED them. whats the point in having a camera if its thumbnail sized pictures? my theory is, if you want a camera…buy a digital and save yourself the 100 bucks on a phone. its about time tmobile has a more affordable sidekick out that you can personalize WITHOUT having to buy those ridiculous vinyl sticker skins off of Amazon.com. THANK YOU TMOBILE!

im gunna get it because its a good price and its got all the basic stuff like web browising, aim, email, etc. i dont need a camera or mp3 because i have all that stuff already. why spend an extra $100 for that stuff.
i like that you can change the bumpers and stuff to, thats cool.

i’m really disappointed with the id. its not that bad, but i wish it had at least an mp3 player, although it would sacrifice size. i suppose it is affordable, but oh well. why not make it more convenient, and have it all in one place. a camera, mp3, phone, and aim? but at least its cheap =)

Omg this thing is fugle as hell it look like a 2 year old made it and yes I now from exp it suck it is a down grade of a sk2 not even a downgrade of the 3 right now I have a kick 3 and I love it
The only reason I think this is no camera no mp3, no sd card slot. ,I have over 30 themes on my kick and a 512 sd card I could not live without more memory. And it look like a mr cartoon { aka sk2 } wanna be I just don’t see y they did not come out wit the 4 yet this thing is just so fugle I can’t even look at it.
At my school we have two skid. Three sk3s and one sk2
Also all the people that have the I’d,s dislike them the only reason they got them is they thought it would be a cool fone then they found out wrong.
So if I were u stay with the 3

OK. The Sidekick iD (in my opinion) is actually pretty cool. for some reason people think there is no usb port on it when in FACT IT IS. It is located on the right side of the sidekick under the charger port. it’s covered by a layer of plastic so your gonna have to get sumthin to left it up. careful not the break it thoug. so there IS A USB PORT ane because there is a usb port, i’m pretty sure the a memory card slot..i just have to find it..

I just receive an upgrade with t mobile and this phone is really good. The sidekick id I recommend, it wont a disappointment. It can’t be compared to the sidekick three but who cares; The only thing i need in a phone is to talk and text, instant message and the internet. If i probably had the sk3 i would have done the same .It cost me $149.99 to upgrade to da SK ID. A college student like me don’t need a camera on a phone. I already own a digital camera and an IPOD. Which LMAO’ doesn’t have an IPOD? I wouldn’t even need the internet
