As I recall, unlike the PS2, Xbox and Xbox360, the PS3 allows you to use your own harddrive in it, no need to buy an "official" harddrive, the PS3 will accept and fully use with no limitations any 2.5 inch SATA harddrive you plug into it. And consdering previous history of the PS2's 40gig hdd being $100, and the 360's 20gig HDD being $100, whatever harddrive you buy yourself will be a lot cheaper than the inflated price of the PS3. Sony just wants to get a more expensive model out to help reduce their losses. One of the main reasons people are not buying them is because of price, making a MORE expensive one, espeically since by now all the "hardcore" fans that would have bought one already have one, is just pointless. Sony should drop the 60GB PS3 to the old 20gb's price of $500 (or better yet, $400!) and make the new PS3 *fingers crossed for at least 120gb* at the current 60gb version of $550-600 or whatever it is.
