Target To Sell Apple TV, But Will People Buy?

targettv.jpg

Target may start carrying Apple TV before the end of the month, joining Best Buy as the only two retail stores selling Apple’s multimedia streaming device. So says AppleInsider at any rate. The current idea is to dedicate a large portion of electronics department floor space to Apple TV, showing everyday consumers (’cause that’s all these companies see you as, consumers) its mighty power.

AI also mentions that, well, Apple TV isn’t selling. A Best Buy rep (admittedly just one, which may not be a wholly accurate representation of the situation) said that it wasn’t “selling too well at our store.” I always had a feeling that Apple TV would be a little more niche than Apple would prefer.

IMHO AppleTV is targeted at two audiences, Apple afficionados and folks who aren’t all that good at networking the PC where their videos live. Just goes to show ya’ how fast that part of the population is shrinking.

I work at Best Buy and we can’t keep Apple TV in stock for more that a few days. My store also is one of few that carry apple computers, so it may just be the case that my store is unique because of this.

Im just curious as to what knowing something about networking has to do with Apple TV not selling? You actually have to know a little about how to set up networks, because of the fact that has to be hooked up wired/wirelessly to the network.

How do you stream your videos/music to your tv/receiver with just a network? I know some receivers have network jack. I wasn’t aware tv’s had network jacks?

Apple TV is no more than a way to send media to your tv with the addition of a Hard drive. Your media library can be stored on the apple tv so you don’t have to always have your computer on to enjoy your media collection on your TV and/or sound system. I’m just confused by the comment about not being good with a network.

And just for and fyi, this comment was NOT written on a Mac, I don’t even own an ipod. I just know a good/useful product when I see one.

I think the Apple TV’s will sell like hotcakes - but it is going to take a little more time for them to catch on and also the major networks finally letting their content be more accessible online, in centralized locations. I don’t get any television reception (and don’t care to cash out the money for cable) so I use a lot of the internet sites (legal ones like ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, iTunes, and AOL In2TV) to watch episodes. It works great, but definetly needs to be streamlined and centralized before it becomes widespread.
