The Bitheads onboard DAC is used whether the unit is powered through the USB from the computer or from batteries. Switch to battery the Bithead will be powered by the batteries which should make for cleaner sound. The whole point of using the Total Bithead with your Mac/PC is too bypass the awful sounding DAC and electronronics in most, if not all sound card most Macs and PC’s are equipted with

Kodeslinger: Can you point me to where you see that the bithead has spdif in? I’ve looked at their online manual and all the photos, and I can’t seem to find it. I’d love to give you the opportunity to correct the author’s supposed ignorance on the issue.

Also, I believe the total bithead DOES come with SPDIF and digital connections.

maybe he’s using a very old model.

This article is full of technical inaccuracies. The crossfeed switch does not change the tonality of any range of the music, it just feeds a slight percentage of the left channel to the right, and vice versa. This can have the effect of making the soundstage sound larger, but it doesn’t change the tonality as this article suggests. Another example: the DAC operates continuously whether the unit is running off of batteries or USB power.

It’s flaws like that, along with the “gushing” tone, that make me disbelieve this article. And I’m a proud owner of a 2006-model Total Bithead. I’m a little disappointed HeadRoom pointed to this “review” from their product page. Diminishes believability.
