80GB PS3 Is For Real, Dare We Say In the Wild?

Lay the rumors to rest, as the truth has now been revealed! Here is a spy-shot of an 80GB Playstation 3 “in the wild” as they say. Before you go calling Photoshop and all that jazz, readers should note that the box contains a new model number for the device: 98004. With the 20GB PS3 laid to rest and the 60GB PS3 as the only lone version available currently, it makes sense for Sony to do a more beefed up model for those using their PS3 for multimedia.

No word yet on when it’ll hit stores, but if it’s already boxed, etc., I’d say by summer’s end.

  • Those sneaky sneaky bastards…

Anyway, I don’t know what they’re thinking of by making a ‘better’ version of the 60gb ps3 which was currently the ‘better’ version. So a ‘better’ version of the ‘better’ version would only make the new ‘better’ version more expensive…throwing it’s ‘better’-ness out the window, seeing as how that’s why the current ‘better’ ps3 hasn’t been selling.

The only way I can see this sell is by a price drop all around…And boy can we only hope.

(plus I’d like to see the 80gb have more than just the hdd, anyone can get the 60gb version and replace the hard drive, they DID make it easy enough for you to do so. So if the only thing different is the hdd, then it’s not worth it…especially if it’s over the current $600 price tag)

  • The 80GB will be replacing the 60GB at the same price point or less. Sony already said last year that their would be incremental improvements like this.

  • Just throw a 80GB (or more) into your current 60GB model and call it a day. I also don’t see how the new Xbox 360 model provides solid proof for this article.

  • Could it be that Sony just pulled out all the 20Gb hard drive and stuck them to the 60Gb version and call it an upgrade?

…with Elite having 120Gb of storage why would Sony only up the hard drive to 80.

I don’t own a next gen console (just my wii)
but why do we need a big harddrive if we can’t(shouldn’t) download HD movies/game?

80Gb just for contents downloadable from live market or sony store?

  • Will these play Bubble Bobble?

  • Going from 60 to 80 is not that big a deal. An extra 20GB means you could store an additional 4 movies at high quality, or about 2 hours of HD content. Meh. I want a 500 GB drive for the PS3.

  • Actually the truth behind this is that we’ve run out of 20GB and 60GB drives.

  • Everybody that has seen this, this is a fake, I work for sony and I helped to make the Ps3. And we will not be making this ‘80gg’ Ps3 you all clam, Photoshop people PHOTO SHOP
