Sadly, most players aside from the iPod lack a digital output (or any output with a line-level signal).

Also, keep in mind, this is for audiophiles. I love Skullcandy's stuff, but they're about as far from audiophile-quality as you can get.

I think the real question is.... Will it blend?

Thats a nice setup though. I'm not much of a fan of buds so I'd pick up some skull candy SK-pros. They have a nice 50mm driver. They aren't the highest quality headphones but they are a good balance of price. But also with DJ headphones you've got about 5 feet more cable than you need.

I think this comes down to preference, but I'm not a big fan of the iPod. I'd do this with a Zune or a PocketPC. Theres a lot of good music playing software for the PPC that has built in EQ's and other settings.

Most headphones don't actually degrade over time -- they just mellow out a bit with the first few hundred hours of use. I suppose if you had headphones for thirty years and used them constantly, they might degrade from wear.

The headphone jack on a music player can degrade though... due to dirt, bent contacts, and corrosion. Usually that leads to easily audible problems like dropouts or shorts rather than a gradual decline in sound quality.

Thanks sadly enough, I actually know what an FFT anlayzer is.

Has anyone ever done a frequency response plot of how the IPOD / or other headphones degrade over time?

Paul G ---
Over the little tiny 15-cent headphone amp that drives the iPod's headphone output? Absolutely! You can even measure the difference yourself with an FFT analyzer...

As far as hearing the difference, you're limited by the headphones you're using, but if you try out Etymotic's flagship headphones, you can hear the diff pretty clearly, especially in the extreme highs and lows.

Looks like a sweet setup. Does the headphone amp really make that much of a difference over the stock one?

I wouldve gone with the Xin supermini or even the micro for a really portable solution (maybe a ray sams tomahawk if i had money coming out of my ass). I used to have an amp about the size of the bithead and still found it a bit large. Kudos for using the line-out though.

wow - you could have ScottEVest make you custom jacket to carry it and have a totaly portal $1000 hi-fi system.
not sure why... but you could
geeky...
very geeky
I think it would be cool to have some sort of inline EQ, so you can adjust the Hi-s, mid-s and low-s of your Ice Cube different than your Cradle of Filth.
