I have found some DVDs (copywrite protected, DRM'd or not) just will not be copied/backed-up successfully with some DVD burners (whether 'Direct' or via USB 2.0) or via different software. Sometimes, it may take the right combination of burner and software to successfully rip a given DVD. Sometimes a additional tool such as VOB Merge or FixVTS maybe also come into play. With DVD burners having the latest specs being so affordable (not talking Blu-Ray or HD-DVD) and already having one with Lightscribe as well, one might consider adding a burner to their stable that is capable of performing a Disc Quality Scan, if you in need of an upgrade or extra burner. I've been advised to steer clear of SATA optical drives for now, as motherboard compatibility can be hit or miss.
