I’m sure plenty of you are still excited about the iPhone, but when the end of June rolls around, will you buy one? It’s not looking likely according to a recent Markitecture poll. Out of 1300 people surveyed, only 6% said they were “likely to purchase the iPhone” when it comes out. The reason? Mostly the price and having to deal with a contract/specific carrier. Ouch! Doesn’t sound too good for Apple!
But at least people know about the iPhone. 77% of those 1300 surveyed said they did indeed know about Apple’s upcoming device. Those who were “very familiar” with the iPhone said they had an excellent or very good impression of it. Sounds like the hype for your product is still there Apple, but you’ll need to get that price down to $499 for the 8GB version or you’ll have a Playstation 3 on your hands.

I think the Iphone would have sold much better if it was release right after the announcement when everyone was in awe of it. Now that the buzz has settled and it’s been picked apart the majority won’t want it.
KC – you are 100% on point… recently Apple began pre-announcing releases, a few weeks after the keynote, reality hits and there just isn’t that much of an absolute rush to go out there and buy one. Is it cool – sure it is… do I want to buy it because it’s cool – nope.
Now let’s see if Apple during the next conference can re-hype the product – they tend to have a knack at being able to re-energize markets rather quickly.
Jon
Well, considering Steve Jobs said their goal was to capture 1 percent of the market by the end of 2008, I’d say the analysts are pretty darn optimistic, and this website (among many others) are playing the half-full glass card. Please. In a market of 100 million phones, six percent would be spectacularly great.
Oh, and I remember well the hoots of derision from detractors at MacCentral over the introduction of a new-fangled device we now know was vastly more popular than anyone could have anticipated:
- “I still can’t believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player?”
- “All that hype for an MP3 player? Break-thru digital device? The Reality Distiortion Field is starting to warp Steve’s mind if he thinks for one second that this thing is gonna take off.”
- “Better bring that price down or you wont sell any of these babies”
Comments from clueless readers after the 2001 iPod introduction.
I disagree KC and Jon, you think it would be better to let the FCC release images and specs? No way. This way, Apple controls the spin; as best they can.
Sure it’d be great if the FCC didn’t have to approve stuff before Apple could sell it but what is Jobs to do?
I think people will buy it, and not just cause they are lemmings…ok, well that and it is slick. Just look at the razr. cmon!
Im sure the iphone will do more than ok when released. Apple above all focuses on one thing only, providing simple solutions to everyday problems (ok and very design oriented as well). As costumers realize iphones ease of use, combination ipod and wireless acess aplications, they will begin to disappear of the stores.
