Optimus Keyboard: Priced at $1,500, Shipped in December

op.jpgWe’ve long thought that the OLEDrific Optimus keyboard was vaporware. While we still haven’t seen anything more than a prototype, it now has a release date and price tag, both features vaporware rarely has. We’re happy to say we were wrong. We’re unhappy, though, about the fact that we can’t afford one, and you likely can’t, either.

The pre-order date was rumored to be May 12, but it’s actually May 20. We’d heard of it being affordable. That was wrong. If you’ve got a spare $1,500, and don’t mind sending it to a totally legit Russian company, you yourself can have a 100% customizable keyboard as early as December. Granted, the Optimus could have been more expensive. For the technology involved, it’s not a bad price. That being said, we’ll wait for the $200 Optinus Keyz Chinese knock-off.

I agree with you Matt, 1500 is way too much for a keyboard - unless it can clean my dishes and mop my floor… I am waiting for the price drop as well :-)

Man I remember first reading about this way back in my senior year in high school, now I’m out of college and have a job….granted I just went to a 2 year and I’m only an intern….but still! Ever since I want this, but $1,500?…Geez I’m planning on buying a new computer soon and I think my price is at $1,500 total.

Matt, I beg to differ with what you said about vaporware rarely having a release date or price. In fact, the more famous pieces of vaporware (Duke Nukem Forever anyone?) have had many MANY release dates with just as many delays.

The Optimus has seen its fair share of delays, and I am still sceptical as to whether it will ever see the light of day. A pre-order date doesn’t change that opinion, and December is quite a while out, it can easily slip into “beginning of 2008″, then “Spring 2008″ and so on…

But I’m already looking forward to reading about the DIY video player hack (which will come out about 7 days after the keyboard has been shipped) that uses all keys together like a wall of screens to play some DivX video on your keyboard, haha!

Didnt they say something about it costing as much as “a good cellphone”?

That’s what I remember them saying…And back when they said it, a ‘good’ cellphone was just a couple hundred if anything.

1500 bucks on a keyboard, thats way more useful than say a 10 year old vehicle which can take you to a store or library with online access at which you could ridicule people for spending 1500 jack in the box jr. bacons on a keyboard (3000) tacos
