Apple’s industrial designers have just been showed up by Yann Le Coroller. The MacTab combines the MacBook’s looks with a tablet PC’s function and portability. It’s held together by “magnets” and “notches” and a hinge on the back lets you use it in the vertical position. Another shot of the beauty…

So yeah, forget the iPhone, Apple, let’s see some new and exciting computer design for a change.

  • Wow that looks good. I would prefer the interface to work in a similar way to the iPhone where we could use our hands and gestures to move things around on the desktop/in folders and trigger actions.

  • Nice concept.. but you are missing the point. Why do you need a keyboard?
I thought Apple solved the problem with iPhone…
Do you really need that stand in the back? makes it look more fragile.

  • From the picture, i saw “A” & “Q” key and were inverted.

  • Can tell you right now, trying to use that flat keyboard would suck. My knuckles hurt just thinking about it.

  • W and Z are inverted for some reason aswell

  • @Hasbullah Pit:
That is a French AZERTY keyboard, no clue why Mac would have a prototype made in france though.

  • Kind of nice but Ives will blow it away like no other if given a chance.

  • @Hasbullah Pit and Asrrin29

The keyboard displays an AZERTY layout because the guy who did the mockup is obviously french ( breton name actually )

  • Yuri Said:

“but you are missing the point. Why do you need a keyboard?

    If you’re serious, you’re dumb.

  • “So yeah, forget the iPhone, Apple, let’s see some new and exciting computer design for a change.”

You’ve got to be kidding! Let’s see someone, anyone, come up with a fraction of the design advancements Apple has produced!

  • I can only imagine trying to type with that on your lap… How would the stand work on your lap? where would the keyboard go?

  • “I can only imagine trying to type with that on your lap… How would the stand work on your lap? where would the keyboard go?”

id imagine apple would find a way around it. Most likely fold the back of the stand the other way and pop the keyboard in, there you have it, typical laptop set up(ish)

  • um, how has apple been ’shown up’ by a completely imaginary visualization of a product?

  • Sneekr,

I think the keyboard detaches from the computer… thus I can only assume there exists some sort of mechanism by which the keyboard may be reattached uh… subsequently..

  • the keyboard is probably attached magnetically or something to the stand that is holding up the display.

  • It only counts as “design” if it fits a set of requirements. These drawings are fun eye candy, but don’t confuse them with actual design that accounts for mundane things like PCB layout, power supplies, battery size, heat dissipation, etc.

  • I think I just orgasmed.

I have a tablet PC (and yes it is as cool as you might imagine!) but that is truely a thing of beauty.

I want to see Apple make one of these, spur the PC makers (fuji, Acer, etc.) to make something more interesting, and spur more development in them.

After all, at the moment tablet PCs are still a novelty!

  • You make it sound like Apple has never designed an innovative computer build before…

  • Macs are just a novelty as well. All looks and no brain. Macs are the blondes of the comp world.

Oh how I love blondes though :D Mmmmmm Blondes.

  • Silliest quote of the day:
“So yeah, forget the iPhone, Apple, let’s see some new and exciting computer design for a change.”
    Congrats.

  • I LIKE!!!! There’s No Place Like HOME!

  • what’s M doing next to L?

  • I’d buy one of those :)

  • Man, that’s what I’ve been waiting for since YEARS!

  • Wow this is totaly awesome, I’d love to have this baby :-).

  • Giskard Reventlov - May 8th, 2007 at 8:09 pm GMT+5

That’s very, very slick. But hasn’t Apple made it fairly clear they’re twice shy after the Newton disaster?

    G.R.
“There is no such thing as the Jamijama.”

  • Lets see.. we go from 1 mouse button, to none at all.

    Brilliant!!!

  • Press the ANY key… hmmm… Where’s the ANY key!?

  • I designed a GIRL with FOUR BOOBS!!!

    Seriously – it’s Mac fantasy art, not a computer….

  • I’m sure I’ll get some groans for this… but…

    MULTI TOUCH SCREEN!

    This would OWN!

  • Ok… seriously I’m pretty sure this is a “mock up” from the designer. I wonder if it really is the tab book. I mean… think about it would apple really take a picture of the uber cool mac book with OS X 10.3.x ? Panther is outdated, and in my opinion there is no way its going to be on the images of their creations. Good Adobe Photoshop skills I guess.

  • As a tablet user, I feel that this design is completely ridiculous. I really don’t see the point of using a tablet vertically. Writing and moving about on a vertical service is extremely difficult, any attempts at it would only push the laptop over. That keyboard is also a nightmare of a design. How would you type? Where would you put it when on the go? What if you lost it?

Functionally, this design is idiotic. It might be aesthetically pleasing and seem like a dream for all you Mac users, but using it would only end up being a hassle. As for the people who are excited about features that could be included in a Mac tablet… they’re already out there, but only on Windows machines.

I also don’t see how an image mock up challenges the design team at Apple. This is only a picture – no specs, no features, no demonstration and most importantly, no prototype.

I have a Thinkpad X60 Tablet with multi touch, if any of you feel like hating on the Windows user.

  • Looks very clean and like a ultrathin computer. Smooth :)
Would be cool if it would cost not more than an imac.

  • Looks nice. Not sure about using magnets though…?!

  • @Lupe:

LOL “all looks”… yeah, that’s why the G5 processor is now in all Xboxs and PS3s… PCs are a cheap, dispossible commodity, with the option to build it yourself. Moderate speed gains and better (& worse) choice of games don’t make up for crap color management, weakened productivity due to glitches, and overall heinous GUI. I’d rather be in a slower Cadillac with an awesome sound system than a slightly faster beige Yugo who’s internals were “ergonomically” designed by 20 accountants, who speak different languages. Quality over quantity, sorry son.

  • It’s the AZERTY keyboard layout used in France (and Belgium). The reason why you ask? Because the designer who designed this thing of beauty IS French! It is _not_designed by Apple mind you and the thing doesn’t even exist, it is merely a digital mockup.

  • “I also don’t see how an image mock up challenges the design team at Apple. This is only a picture – no specs, no features, no demonstration and most importantly, no prototype.”

It’s amazing that some people hold an aire of professionalism, yet forget that drawings, images, sketches, doodles, yodles, play-doh, toothpicks, and popsicle sticks are where EVERYTHING we have today came from. It spurred the imagination to want to ‘create’. If you don’t believe me, take your cherished Tablet PC and do a search for “Da Vinci” and “sketches” and then tell me how we put 300 people in one chunk of metal and made it fly! Somebody had an idea!

  • The keyboard is a slide out and the back of the keyboard will be the backside of the front of the laptop when closed. This will be made … a little worm in an “Apple” told me.

  • “z” and “w” keys are flipped also…..

  • This prototype mock-up is not a feasible design. There would not be near enough heat dissipation to accomodate the Intel processor without sacrificing power or regressing back to the Power PC processor. Although these concepts are definitely on the board for future incarnations, they are still an unreality at this time. Rest assured Apple Designers are the best in the industry and maybe just maybe a low voltage quad core with a bit of onboard flash memory may be the answer in creating such a device.

  • That is definitely a clean looking design. I don’t see the keyboards being detachable like that quite anytime soon though.

  • Clarissa – The thing that Lenovo (IBM) calls “multitouch” is very different than what is proposed by Apple in their tablet PC. Lenovo’s “multitouch” is very simply the ability to use either the pen OR your finger to point on the touch-sensitive screen. Apple’s tablet PC will use the Multitouch technology created by Fingerworks (www.fingerworks.com) which will allow the recognition of more than one point of contact on the touch-sensitive surface. This will essentially eliminate the need for a separate keyboard, since the screen can serve as a virtual keyboard.

For anyone not familiar with multitouch technology, I recommend checking out the fingerworks website. They are no longer in business, but their website contains very interesting information about the keyboards that numerous dedicated fans (myself included) have used for many years. The technology that run these keyboards are what will make these tablets the Thing To Own.

And yes, I will purchase one as soon as they becomes available

  • Quartertone, I’m with you….

“A pearl of great worth …”
I dream about it at night. I visualize all the places my “McTablet” and I will go and all the wonderful things we will create together.
    Others tablets pale by comparison.
    Hurry Santa. don’t delay.

  • Gostei desse novo modelo da apple

  • uhh … there’s already a Tablet mac o.o the ModBook.

    http://www.axiotron.com/index.php?id=modbook

  • I think the design is quite good, but the keyboard would need some work
Panasonic’s Toughbook line already has the detachable keyboards & touch screens for XP Tablet, it just looks like it was built for the military (anyone surprised?)

As far as heat, so long as the back is alumnium, you can heat-pipe to it, and use the chassis as a heat sync.

The flat keyboard would not work for me, and would need to have some depth. The other choice is the laser keyboard, which projects a full keyboard onto the surface infront of you, and transmits your “keypresses”, but I hear that it really hurts to use long-term.

The stand design needs a bit more work too, but nothing that is impossible. Just double the length so it will fold up neatly, and still fold out to provide a full triangular base to support the screen on rough/mobile surfaces.

Check out the IBM Thinkpad Tablet for a simple, working latch design.

Personally, I love my XP x64 and XP Tablet, but I have friends who would really like a Mac-let.
