Rumors: No Santa Rosa Macbooks But OLED On the Way

According to my source who works with Apple, no Santa Rosa-related Macbooks or anything for that matter will be coming in the next few weeks or even months. Sorry. Not happening. Untrue.

However, the OLED Macbook rumors seem to be true and our source says we can expect to see them within the next month. Extremely exciting news, I know. But hey, the iPhone is about a month away, so start getting excited again for that.

Editor’s Note: Our source says OLED. Organic LEDs. Not LED, not DHL, not DEL. O L E D.
Editor’s Note #2: VV says his source told him OLED.

  • Rumours about OLED displays in Apple products are so old that my grandfather heard some of them in during World War 1.

If there will be an OLED in a macbook, it will be a minor subdisplay, not the main display. I don’t think any of the OLED manufacturers are at a level where they could reliably mass manufacture sufficiently large screens.

  • Tom-
Maybe you should give this a whirl.

  • OLED? There are no rumors about OLED technology in Macbooks. Just LED Backlit LCDs.

  • Thanks Peter, LED-based macbooks make a lot more sense.

In the next 12-18 months however I would expect ( based on nothing more than an educated guess) that we may see OLED-based ipods. As a technology, OLED is highly compatible with everything Apple stands for as a business…with substantial reductions in energy usage, more attractive appearance, unlimited viewing angles, etc.

  • Tom is right. No way an iBook can have an OLED main display anytime soon. The largest OLED display that has been manufactured in mass quantity so far is 4″. An 11″ OLED TV is soon to start making its entrance later this year, but at a reportedly 1,000sets/month. Wait for another 5 years before you see any laptop with an OLED main display (if the production technology ever reaches that stage of development)

I also believe OLED would be perfect for iPod, but at this time, no one can supply such huge demand.

  • I think you meant LED. Come on, do a little research will ya?

  • Nothing for months? How about the iPhone?!!!

  • Can you not read? Instead of second guessing the editor maybe try reading what he said again:

“Editor’s Note: Our source says OLED. Organic LEDs. Not LED”

It certainly wouldn’t be the first time Apple’s surprised everyone tech wise.
