I just got an email from a reader who is having problems with our RSS feed in Google Reader. Anyone else having issues? Our feeds are http://feeds.feedburner.com/crunchgear and http://feeds.feedburner.com/crunchgear/HOT. She says that all of the stories come at once and when I tried Google reader with the feed it was missing a few more recent stories.

  • That’s true… I had just assumed it was intentional that the RSS feed wasn’t updated till a certain number of new stories were made.

  • I’ve had the same issue. Stories come in larger bunches once or twice a day instead of on a regular basis like with other readers.

  • feh! ok. i just emailed feedburner.

  • Are you guys having problems in Google Reader? What is everyone using?

  • I have said problem in Google Reader….

  • Hrm… I just added a ping to google reader. Please let me know if its improving.

  • Google Reader checks every once in a while for new posts in feeds instead of checking immediately when you want to look at the feed. This is so it can cache them for later on Google’s own servers, so you can still read it even if the story gets removed from the feed before you get around to checking them. It’s normal for it to lag behind by a few posts sometimes.

  • I use Google Reader and it’s typical to get 10-15 crunch gear posts all at once. I always thought something was fishy when the last 10 posts all were published exactly 47 minutes ago. This same problem occurs with every blog that I read with GR. I wish that it would update dynamically or that they would add a “refresh” button that actually checks the feeds (rather than Google’s cache) like other feed readers.

  • All the ones in my reader lag behind by a few posts some of the time (def not all the time). Must be the way google crawls the blogs.

  • I have been having this problem for months now, but just lived with it.

  • thanks for the input, everyone. I’m HOPING that adding a ping to google reader will improve things, but I wonder if there’s something else we can do. I’ll keep researching.

  • I’m using Thunderbird for RSS and it seems to be working fine.

  • For the past 4 days or so, crunchgear isn’t showing up in the Google RSS reader. The number of unread posts is shown, but clicking on the feed to display the posts seems to hang the Google RSS reader.

This problem is only showing up with crunchgear and is not exhibited by any of the 22 other feeds in my Google Reader.
