Opie & Anthony Fans Cancel XM and Destroy Their Radios in Response to Suspension

xmpests.jpg

XM Satellite Radio is finding out first hand that Opie & Anthony have quite a few dedicated fans, fans who are now canceling the service en masse in response to the duo’s recent 30-day suspension. XM suspended the pair in response to so-called outrage stemming from a segment that aired on the program last week. (Well, really because, supposedly, there was an agreement in place that they wouldn’t discuss or even hint to the incident while on-air. XM apparently felt they did.) In fact, I was jogging around my idillic neighborhood when I heard the show and segment in question. Annnnndddd….

First, what happened. Last week, the boys invited a homeless guy, Charlie, who is not a recurring character on the show as some other outlets have reported, up to the studio to riff, to talk crazy homeless talk. They’ve had a bunch of homeless guys on their show over the years, asking them questions of what’s it’s like to be homeless in New York, why wouldn’t they rather be homeless in Miami (New York’s winters are awful for everyday Joes, I can’t imagine what’s it’s like for the homeless), what are the rules of the streets, etc. Or, in simple English, they put them on the air because it makes for good radio. Charlie said many things that day, like how only brand new, rookie police officers bother him when they find him doing homeless stuff (yes, that’s the technical term) and how Secretary of State Rice looks like she could use a man, implying that she’s uptight and so forth. The audio for that can be found here (NSFW, blah blah). You can decide whether or not Opie & Anthony or Charlie are openly advocating for the woman to be sexually assaulted. I’m going to take a wild guess and say they weren’t.

xmpests2.jpg

Now, the show’s fans are upset (to the point where some of them are destroying their XM units) for several reasons. First and foremost, XM is a subscription service. Fans pay their hard-earned $12.95 each month to hear adult language and humor because that’s what they like. Turn around and retroactively censor what they say and XM won’t be seeing their money anymore since that’s not what they’re paying for. Hell, they’ve even formed a Political Action Committee in response to all these recent radio firings. Some people subscribe to HBO to see Tony Soprano murder people, others subscribe to XM to hear Opie & Anthony make inappropriate jokes. Both are creative outlets and not “real,” so to speak. It is, in fact, a comedy show, so for people to scrutinize it like it’s Meet the Press seems a little silly. And besides, if XM is going to start objecting to “deplorable” language, when are they going to remove the explicit language-heavy comedy channel, or the stations that feature all that hip hop with its fine and morally sound depictions of women and society? You might as well just rock an iPod all day long. At least that doesn’t carry a monthly fee.

What should or shouldn’t be on radio aside, XM now has to deal with untold numbers of pests, as the fans of the show are called, canceling the service and destroying radios left and right in protest. Wonder how this affects the merger, a merger that many pests are against? Could it be that XM suspended O&A just to play politics and help the merger go through?

I cancelled my XM subscription and tried to flush my XM unit down the toilet. I still love you boys and little jimmy. Death to censorship and interest groups controlling the marketplace.

Bababooey

This is only going to sell more Sirius radios!

Howard Stern rules!

Finally an article written by someone who (1) did thier research (2) has a brain in thier head and can differentiate between media hype and fact. Well done and thank you. I cancelled my 6 subscriptions yesterday, but haven’t destroyed my radios in case this is resolved.

My six units are being cancelled as I type this. I am listening to the company idiot trying to talk me out of it right now. I am very angry that I must give up Ron and Fez to make this point but some sacrifices must be made.

Bababafaggy,

I was provided a free sirius unit two years ago when I became an NFL employee. It’s still unactivated and in the box. There will be few sales from O&A fans because we only listen to shows that are funny. Hoo Hoo.

Are you Stern fans ignoring the “Don’t Feed the Artie” signs? My, oh, my he’s a hefty one!

Thanks for posting this. It is absolutely deplorable that XM has suspended O&A….this is America and free speech does not have boundries…it is not freedom of speech until I don’t like what was said….or until someone hurts my precious feelings…. Hopefully the big wigs at XM get the message. The only way to really voice our dissatisfaction is to hit them where it hurts, in the susbscription $.

i cancled my radio too…. the only reason i had xm is to listen to o and a…. time to go HD

Fred

HD radio sucks ass, the whole point of paying for radio is so you don’t have to listen to commercials for 20 minutes of the hour.

I too have canceled my subs to XM. It was XMs’ advertisement of “no censorship”, that gave me the initiative to purchase the XM service. I have informed the FCC of XM’s documented false advertisement, as well as the tactics XM are using to keep unhappy subscribers by: placing paying customers on hold for 30 plus minutes, haggling with customers with bribes for free months services and flat out hanging up on them. XM may not be regulated by the government, but they have to obey it.

I really think they are listening to Stern too. Didn’t I hear sometime about a clown ( bubba ) on with Stern doing or saying something wrong about the president? I’m sure these special interest groups ( liberal and conservative ) will be getting back to him and Stern soon.

Bagofchisels (Who am I?)

Nice writing, I am glad to see that there is such an uproar about this. I hope that the boys are put back on soon. To the stern zombies that read this no I will not buy a sirus radio, I will just get an Ipod.

Curb

I am going to cancel in the morning, but I too will be saving my XM just incase they do work this out. *Please tell me its not 100% done

JJ (Who am I?)

I may listen to Stern and have Sirius but I still love the boys and hate all this bullshit that’s happening to them. I gave up on XM a long time ago because their music sucked really bad. It’s a shame because O&A were great when they were on all morning on XM, then it became watered down when they went to FM.

What I can’t believe is how everyone never really wrote or said anything about how shitty XM has treated the boys the whole time they were on XM. They were always treated like second-class citizens and never given the proper support to grow and become a real national show. No promotional support, no booking or guest support, ect. , ect. Why do you think O&A thought going to FreeFM would be so great? Thet wanted a change from the shit treatment they were getting at XM.

Fuck XM, rumor news on whackbag is that XM really fired them already.

Will CBS fire them to? Probably. It’s fucked up.

I wish the boys luck and I’ll be there when they bounce back.

I’ve been an XM subscriber since 2002 and last night I spent over an hour on the phone cancelling my service. Additionally since this only happened because of the merger (they’ve said and one much worst things than these) I called and cancelled my Sirius subscription as well.

Connor Peterson (Who am I?)

It really killed me to do it, but I canceled my XM and threw it in the bay. First Imus, then JV & Elvis, then O&A. Don’t worry, Stern is next, you short-sighted morons.

a year and a half on the air, and no improvement for CBS.

its easy to see why they got suspended.
so why should XM believe them to be a valuable asset?
bottom line: they aren’t.
at least, not enough to jeopardize the merger, which XM sorely needs.

I can’t believe that the guy I agree with the most is a Stern fan. Just canceled my 3 subs. Excuse me while flush my XM down the toilet, buy a SIRIUS, and fuck my mother.

Although it is a huge stretch of the imagination, crazy things have been done - by O&A. I do doubt that they would go to this elaborate of extremes to get a “fake suspension” and/or some press, while they rebuilt the studio. Think the “faith healer” or “turkey shoot” bits caused riots, just imagine what this would do. Again, I highly doubt this is the case, but would not be completely shocked if it were in one fashion or another.

Goodbye XM. I listened to at least 9 hours of 202 every single day, then 3 of Sports Nation, and 1 of the Glenn Beck show on CNNHN. The one that made me consider not giving up my sub is the Ron and Fez show, the rest I can live without. I signed on in 03 for NASCAR, I stayed for O&A.

Now I’m leaving for O&A+ lil’ Jimmy.

Back to Winnipeg (Who am I?)

I got an XM trial service with my Hummer back in February. A couple of weeks ago, it expired, and I decided to go onto my brother’s account.

Needless to say, that was a bad idea, because now he’s canceling because of this stupid O&A thing (along with my radio and someone else’s).

Canceling radios won’t get the message across. THEY WON’T CARE.

Back to crappy Winnipeg FM radio, with it’s 20 minutes of commercials on my 20 minute work-drive.

PS: The reason I was piggy-backing on my bro’s was because he was on the US XM system, and the Canadian XM system doesn’t have the same programming (translation: it sucks)

Otter (Who am I?)

I too cancelled my xm service today!! I think the management of xm radio has made a terrible mistake, they betrayed their subscribers trust by “protecting” us WHAT A BUNCH OF HOR$E$HIT. EVERY FAN OF O&A SHOULD CANCEL TODAY!!!!

By the way - so far at least 2 advertisers have cancelled their XM ads because O&A are not on. adameve.com and nashvillecoffee.com both have pulled their ads and more advertisers are considering it.

Joe

I am a huge O&A fan, but I must say that this isnt a matter of free speach. XM puts them on the air and has the right to decide if they want to keep them or if they don’t. What this is a matter of is the consumers requests being ignored. We disagree with XM’s politics but the truth is they have every right. I did not cancel my service, I called in and made them give me free service until the boys are put back on the air. Dont be stupid, canceling service would hurt them but so would getting service for free. Don’t smash your radios, they will be back and you will want to hear them. And please stop trying to make this into a freedom of speach issue, this is a company exercizing its rights, obviously wrongly, but it is their right as its your right to cancel or get your sub free.

Don Rickles (Who am I?)

They were suspended because of the merger, not because of poor management at XM, or any other reason. If it was a free speech issue it’d be one thing, but it’s politics and getting the merger approved.

The “new” company will be paying Stern’s boring show so much money that O&A would be superfluous anyhow.

rob enderle (Who am I?)

Excuse my not giving a f*** either way but didnt some guy further above mention he was cancelling his SIX radios.
Does that mean that this person is paying 6 monthly fees?
I presume that with satellite radio if you want it in the car and in the house that counts as two separate services?
Do they offer discounts for multiple radios?

Seriously, I have to ask because I want to know what kind of lunatic pays for 6 separate satellite radios.

Great article. Couldn’t agree more. It’s amazing how much these people are hyperventilating over something that was taken completely out of context. Time to start pushing back.

Ok, before I go into the jokes, first I need to clear something up:

@ernie: “.this is America and free speech does not have boundries”

Err, actually, yes, it does. Quite a few boundaries, in fact. There’s the oft-quoted ‘Shouting fire in a crowded theatre’ limit. Basically, it means that the Gov’t has the right to tell you to STFUNEWB if what you are saying can cause a public danger, such as people getting trampled to death. Then there is the law known as slander/libel. You can’t slander/libel someone freely. There are gov’t laws against that. And, coming at this from a different angle, O&A’s constitutionally guaranteed free speech was not trampled in any way whatsoever. The constitutions guarantees that the *government* can not limit what you are allowed to say (within reason, as already pointed out). XM is not the gov’t and is allowed to do whatever they want and they are not blocking anyones free speech.

Now, that said, I had to throw in the obvious joke:
“XM Satellite Radio is finding out first hand that Opie & Anthony have quite a few dedicated fans, fans who are now canceling the service en masse in response to the duo’s recent 30-day suspension. “? All five of them? But crap, isn’t that like half of satellite radio’s subscription base anyways? =)

All true O&A fans as well as the pests agree with me when i say that the suspension is fucked up. Well, my point is this. Destroying your radios wont get the message across. XM has your $$$ for the radios units sold already, so what happens when they come back on the radio in a month? Now you’ve gotta but a whole new unit. Its fucked up but come on use your heads people. WE MISS O&A FOR SURE.! So much for uncensored radio and freedom of speech.

Scott Goodwin (Who am I?)

Rob: re the guy canceling six radios–not uncommon to have more than one sub. I got my first one three years ago, then added another sub for my wife’s car; got one for my dad for Christmas in 2005 and another for my grandmother in Christmas 2006. XM has a family plan for all those additional units (about $6/mo).

I’m not destroying my two units, but am canceling them. Can’t cancel the two gift ones–wouldn’t be fair to them (grandmother doesn’t even know who O&A are; she just likes the Standards).

Paul R. Nelson (Who am I?)

I canceled my two XM units but will reactivate them irregardless of the outcome. There are rumors circulating that they are already fired, but only the XM Board knows for certain and I don’t think Dougout Doug or Zag has spies on the board.

My suspicion is O&A want people to consider this a firing so fans cancel and show XM their fans are behind them. I think O&A may have fed this “We’re Fired” story to Zag and Doug and then the boards to encourage people to cancel.

XM says they want them back in 30 days. I don’t recall CBS saying this about JV & Elvis or Imus.

Howard Stern is a whining, run crying to Mel because O&A are talking about me, pussy piece of shit. I hope some special interest group goes after him next.

The merger was in all fairness not likely even before this happened.

Politicsguy

I think they used O&A as toys. Since the merger with Sirius they have been looking for an excuse to let the boys go. I am a big of Stern and O&A. Howard says things more than them. WHY PAYING SUCH AMOUNT EVERY MONTH THEN?. It sucks that no more free speech blahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I am gone now. fuck em.

no image
Voice of Reason (Who am I?)

This isn’t a Stern vs. O&A issue, so I don’t know why everyone is attacking Howard, he’s not the one who suspended the guys. The simple fact is that Howard makes a lot of money, O&A make a lot of money, and Howard is a bigger name that brings in more subscriptions than O&A. When (if) the merger goes through, it doesn’t really make much sense to keep both parties, and since Howard is the bigger name with (likely) more listeners, and since Sirius (although it’s supposed to be a merger of equals) really has the upper hand in the merger, they’re going to keep Howard.

Hell, they got in trouble for doing a bit that they OBVIOUSLY ripped off of Howard anyway. Half of their show is Howard’s recycled material.

no image
What? (Who am I?)

Voice of reason, what bit did they rip off? And how many listeners does Stern have compared to O&A… oh that’s right you listen to everything he says. Keep drinking the Kool Aid and thinking everyone steals from Howard. You sound brainwashed and can’t see past your own bias.
