I thought Microsoft had made it abundantly clear that it was backing HD DVD, but talk has surfaced in recent days of the company embracing Blu-ray, especially if it feels HD DVD isn’t catching on. No sir, that couldn’t be further from the truth:

We’re fully committed to HD-DVD and have absolutely no plans to support other optical formats…. Current reports indicating that Microsoft has a back-up plan which includes Blu-ray support are incorrect

Well there you go. In no uncertain terms, Microsoft will not be supporting Blu-ray. Not no way, not no how.

  • GAH! Just let the format war end please! I admit I found it fun at first to choose a side and debate why one technology was better than the other (which Blu-ray is btw ;P ) but now I’m just burned out… by the time one of the format wins, HD programming via downloadable content will already be the most viable solution.

  • M$ never supported the DVD in XP so I don’t se any problem with this. Except the Xbox 360.

  • My bet is that they will very soon – from Bill Gates saying who needs over 512kb ram in a computer to them saying they will sell over 1M Zunes by June – betting against what they say is the surest bet.

  • No plans to support other optical formats?!? So DVD and CD are no longer to be supported my MS? Great! That’s why I use Ubuntu, it will support whatever the market demands it too.
