Sometimes we talk about gadgets with the candor of rich European royalty. We can’t afford all the gadgets we want, and likely neither can you. Thankfully, manufacturers like to address the low-end as much as the high-end. And while the cheapest Macs might be going the way of Dakota Fanning’s likability, cheap PCs are here to stay, for good or bad.

Forbes has concocted a list in handy slide-show format of the 5 cheapest PCs you can buy right now, including one as low as $85. These computers redefine bare bones, and they’re not for most people. Indeed, these boxen are suitable for specific low-intensity tasks, like email kiosks, or even in-car data servers.

Or maybe you’re not just poor, you’re cheap, too. In any case, we can’t really recommend any of them, but maybe you’ll see something you like? Short of industrial uses, we can’t think of a reason to skimp this much.

  • Dakota Fanning’s likability? Fuck you. Computers have nothing to do with the young talented actress (not to mention highly successful AND likable, and who at the age of 13 has banked more money than you’ll ever make in your miserable little life). Trashing Dakota is ridiculous and uncalled for in an article like this. Do everyone a favor and try hiring someone who can actually write an intelligent article.

  • Thanks, otto. Beat me to it.

  • I am sure there will be many consumers who will purchase these boxes if they don’t know about computers. Hopefully a helpful sales representative will be helpful and redirect them to a more expensive and useful model.

  • @ otto & defan: I’m sorry, but knocking on Paris or Lindsay Lohan is too easy these days, so I figured I’d switch it up some.

Successful, sure. Talented, oh yes. But every time I see her, I like her a little less. So I stand by what I said re: Dakota Fanning. Sorry guys.

And your original comment came pretty quickly on the heels of this article. What is it you’re so hot about with me dissing poor little miss Fanning? Do you have a Google news alert that clues you in every time her name hits the web? If so, you’re surely a dirty old perv. Not that there’s anything wrong with it, but, ya know, ew.

  • Wow. She is an actress. Unless you know her personally or are somehow related to her, you can’t really tell whether there is anything to like about her in the first place. Matt writes about technology which is exactly what he did, had crunchgear been a blog about celebrity gossip maybe you would be right in flaming him. However, it might have been a good idea to stay relevant to the actual post.

Also, I would have used a better analogy, if I may:

“And while the cheapest Macs might be going the way of Hermione Granger’s innocence…”

  • That was directed at otto and defan. Matt was simply expressing his opinion. It was literally 3 words and had nothing to do with the rest of the article.

  • @ ilya: quote: “And while the cheapest Macs might be going the way of Hermione Granger’s innocence…”

    ftw!
