One Million Zunes (Somehow) Sold

Talk about a shock over the weekend. Microsoft somehow managed to sell one million Zunes. Robbie Bach, Microsoft’s president of Entertainment and Devices, said that Microsoft had met its goal and that more Zune things will come later this year. I can understand maybe a smaller company getting excited over selling a million devices, but Apple in Q4 of last year alone sold 14 million iPods. Yeah, 14 million people bought iPods. Now those Zunes seem pretty dinky in comparison, eh?
Does Microsoft even have time to make a new Zune and launch it? Does it even have a remote chance of becoming successful? I highly doubt it at this point.

Come on dude!!! Don’t write stupid things just to provoke reaction. One million Zune is just in one 30GB category and only in USA where as the iPod number is across the range and all over world. But I find it hard to believe that Crunchgear does not know this. It would have been good if you had put things in perspective.

Somebody is missing either an eye, a leg or their first born child… let’s hope them offloading these Zunes at the local dump taught them a lesson to INNOVATE! I look forward to a real competitor to iPod in the near future - they are about the only company with the resources and money to do so.

To hear what Microsoft is actually thinking/doing with the Zune rather than just making snarky, uninformed speculations, head over to http://www.twit.tv/ww17 and listen to David Caulton of the Zune team being interviewed by Paul Thurrott and Leo LaPorte.

That was about as fluffy and link-baity a post as can be written. I’m not a zune fan, but I applaud anyone that can sell a million of anything into a market that’s totally saturated with a super-dominant competitor.

I think 1,000,000 Zunes is a great start for an average product. I think there is plenty of opportunity for creating new things in this sector. I am placing my bets on the Zune in the long run. I think MS will create something very interesting. Check out the Ad-Supported Music Central blog:

Be a lemming, buy a iPod.
I’ve seen little old ladies using them now. Apple users like to think they are different, they don’t follow the popular trends, don’t fit into the normal mold… they don’t compromise their integrity or their product to sell to the masses…
iPods are like pop music now, sickly sweet, bubblegum… everyone has one and they are no longer unique… those white headphones mark you as a lemming.

I’m also curious to see some more details on that 1MM number. While it’s certain possible that 1,000,000 people have purchased Zunes, given the high profile that MS gave to the “million zune march” Microsoft *had* to make this number.
That opens up possibilities like “one million Zunes have been sold into retail,” which could include all units sitting in store inventories (i.e. not yet actually sold to a customer) and units currently in transit to retail stores. That’s a game that Microsoft has played before when actual consumer-purchased units don’t match the number they’d like to report.
Again, it’s entirely possible that there are a million Zunes in consumers’ hands, but I’d like to see a bit more information before accepting that as gospel.

“SHIPPED” is not the same as sold except for a guy who hanging onto his job - though after the holidays when MS is third in the console business, he’ll be Zune gone.
MS has a habit of having/edict of counting SHIPPED as the same as SOLD (Xbox & “sales” numbers are really “shipped” numbers)

Wow, talk about linkbait.
This was one of the worst articles I have ever seen on this site. I can’t believe you guys would crack idiotic jokes to garner a few extra hits. Seriously.

I simply dont believe that M$ has sold a million zunes.
I have never even seen one!
No facts, no announcements, no back-up info - M$ are a bunch of cheating, lying crooks, and the Zune really is CRAP, so, no sorry. This isnt a factual thing.
A million sitting in warehouses? Maybe……

Do anyone know the figure of the first generation iPod sold in the US for the first time? this would’ve been a better comparison to use with the Zune’s current figure, and despite the difference in half a decade, it’s better than comparing the iPod figure from last years.
I actually did have a zune, it’s nowt special, it does the jobs well, won’t have to worried about the screen getting scratched anymore.
