Apple’s iPhone To Support 3rd Party Apps After All

Back in the day, His Steveness mentioned that the iPhone wouldn’t have support for third-party apps. He said it was an issue of security and usability, but since the apps aped OS X’s built-in Widgets, which actively encourages third-party development, it seems like BS.
At the D Conference earlier today, Steve changed his tune, saying later in the year Apple would probably open up the iphone to third party developers. This is fantastic news, as it takes the iPhone from being a pretty Blackberry with an iPod inside to another level, that of a true smartphone.
Only now, after hearing the news, do I totally want an iPhone. Gimmit.

If this actually is true this is very nice and will help Apple and the iPhone grow. I knew it would happen someday. It is just the iPhone is Apple’s new toy and they don’t want to share (who would anyway?). I’m glad Apple is deciding to let other companies in on the fun. As for Word/Office? Hrmm… Microsoft is probably going to make Apple (and the consumer) pay for that one, simply because Microsoft can… and they are mean (I’d say worse but swaring is not appropriate here).

The devil is in the details. I had a Tapwave Zodiac; that was theoretically open to third parties too, but your binaries had to be signed by Tapwave at great expense to use the hardware. If Apple put similar hurdles in place I’m not interested; a lot of the best Mac software is free or shareware.

Nice photo. Looks exactly like the one I created for my 3rd party app post in January. http://dazilgroup.com/blog/?p=1004
