I really have to see Palm’s Foleo before I begin ragging on it, but this new not-a-laptop just wasn’t doing it for me. The video above gives us a better idea of what’s up here, but come on, Palm. Amaze us this year.

Ed’s key phrase is that “sometimes you want simplified computing.” I don’t want to have a device that is useful only some of the time. It’s like a corkscrew. This goes against the smartphone always-carry meme.
As far as seeing thousands of applications being developed very quickly, this seems somewhat of a stretch.

The big thing that makes it stupid to my mind is that you have to have a Palm smartphone to use it. Why didn’t they make it work with any Bluetooth phone? Talk about restricting your potential market…
(I was hoping for Palm’s answer to the Nokia N800.)

Naturally, this is not an ideal product for those of us who have bought a laptop in the last couple years. But for those who will be first time customers of a laptop in the near future, they should consider this. Price and function of the Foleo will appeal to a LOT of people who do not have laptops, but always wanted one. I think Palm is smart by tapping into a market with very little competition (at the moment): a device somewhere inbetween a PDA and a laptop at a reasonable price.
