Who hates Microsoft Office? Google Docs not getting the job done for you? Well, Mac users are in luck because OpenOffice has released an alpha version for OS X that runs outside of X11. OMFG!!! Keep in mind that this is an “alpha” version, so a handful of functions are missing such as printing, PDF export and copy/paste. Be warned:

THIS SOFTWARE MAY CRASH AND MAY DESTROY YOUR DATA DO NOT USE THIS SOFTWARE FOR REAL WORK IN A PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT

Really doom-and-gloomy for office apps. Who amongst you is brave enough to use OpenOffice for OS X?!

  • That warning is quite funny.. and who in their right mind would use it in actual office work?… and not when Office 2008 for mac is around the corner, have you seen it? i have and even i admit is even better than win version.. and that is something when you are refering to office 2007.. it makes openoffice feel ancient and inadequate.

  • Its about time open office does this but I agree with Avatar, Office 2008 for mac looks fantastic, I am sure to purchase it when its out.

  • I have been using NeoOffice for a while now, it is a stable branch of Open Office that is built using Aqua.

With regards to Microsoft Office, it sucks. I’m never paying for Microsoft crap again. I also don’t recommend people download it off bittorrent either, because when there are quality free replacements for these programs today available on the web why should you take the risk. Even if you do it at home you are hurting the situation by perpetuating Microsoft’s dominance of the market. It is time to move away from Microsoft!

  • Yeah, Neooffice is quite good not sure why one would use open office vs. neooffice on a mac…

MS office is fine, accept or Enturague which is some seriously fucked up outlook mutation that is just horrible in every possible way. No clue what happened there but everyone who tried to use it has nothing but pain (even simple drag and drop doesn’t work right in it).

Main issue with all these combos is power point stuff never works well in anything but it’s native application.

  • Yep I also agree with Griffon, Entourage 2004 is cr*p they need outlook for mac

  • I have been using “Open Office” for well over a year now, never looked back and sure as hell don’t miss M$. Firefox + OO + Thunderbird = M$ free :-)

  • I love open office too, but MS finally made something good when they got OneNote 2007 ironed out. I never thought I’d ever have something good to say about a MS product, but it is truly outstanding. And unfortunately, you really only get the most out of it when its working with the rest of office. I guess it would work ok as a stand-alone, but I haven’t seen anything in the OpenSource community that even come close to what OneNote can do.

  • I have been using neooffice (http://www.neooffice.org/) for a while and it works really great and is more bug free than ms office.

Its going to take openoffice years before they have a mac version stable enough to be used in real life

  • arg neooffice? why have i been using openoffice this whole time?

    thx guys!

  • I know I’m late joining this discussion, but we just picked up iWork ‘08 last week, and if you haven’t given it a go yet, I highly recommend doing so. It costs only $79, compared to Office ‘08 whopping $399 (and possibly $499) price tag. And I can honestly say that once I got past the whole “why doesn’t the GUI behave like Office” thing, I doubt you will ever want to go back to Microsoft’s increasingly bloated office suite. iWork ‘08 is a joy to use, even when we were porting our 50-page film-production spreadsheet to Numbers. And the integration between Pages, Keynote, Numbers and just about any other Apple program you have installed was so fluid that it made Office ‘07 look stale. And for those folks who tried to convince us that iWork was underpowered for our needs, we have yet to come a cross a single office task or calculation that iWork ‘08 can’t do with ease. It takes some relearning, yes. But after a few hours, I doubt you’ll miss Office. But thats just my opinion.
