Universities like Columbia and UCLA have recently come under fire from the RIAA and House committees, and are being pressured into upping the consequences for illegally downloading music. Nineteen universities across America were forced to take a six-page survey, which contained questions such as, “Does your institution expel violating students?”.

In the past 4 months the RIAA has engaged in more than 1,600 lawsuits against individual students demanding $3,000 from each for copyright infringement.

This is a step up from suing 10-year-old girls, the handicapped and the deceased. The recording industry is willing to compromise somewhat and give students discounted subscription services, however, this will not give them access to a broad range of music.
