An excited tipster dropped us a line today about AT&T’s network roll-out and, interestingly enough, a 3G iPhone rumor. Clearly this is grain of salt territory, but he’s saying that AT&T employees are being told that a 3G version of the iPhone is coming out soon — perhaps even as soon as Q4 2007 aka the Holidays. Popular opinion slated a 3G version for Q1 2008 or later.
He’s also saying that AT&T has done very little to their overall network to support the potentially increased traffic, which could be a bummer for those who don’t want to view the watered down Internet. Take it or leave it, folks.

don’t believe it. #1- AT&T employees are the last to know anything about the iphone, #2- why would Apple invest time to develop two phones at the same time (Europe will be released then and Europe doesn’t play the 3G game). This supports the reason why Gen1 iphone is sans 3G because EDGE technology plays double with a US and later European release. #3- Does Apple have the power to develop a Gen2 iphone, European iphone and Leopard at the same time. They delayed Leopard because of one version of the iphone. #4- Apple doesn’t outdate their products for atleast a year, i.e. macbooks. I don’t think a 3G/gen2 iphone will come out until next summer, atleast.
Also, if Apple did make one and release it in the 4th quarter, that would totally jeopardise the European, Asian and rest of the world sales
well this thing about 3g phones being released at the end of the year is true. Apple will release two versions of the phone one with edge and one 3g.
Interesting comment from drole.homme, the whole world pretty much plays 3G these days except the United States, which is why there has to be a 3G iPhone being planned, I can’t even sign up on a 2G or 2.5G plan here in Australia anymore, it’s all 3G. Also one of the reasons I’m still cold on the iPhone: surfing on the 2G network is like dial-up, it might work great but you can’t improve on crappy speeds.
Is it just me or does every faked device have Zero 7 or Massive Attack on it?
No chance. Not one. As a former Apple employee, I can tell you that if the 3G iPhone is released on New Year’s Day, Apple employees will be informed on January 2. Apple has never told a retail employee anything in advance, not even the assistant managers, and often not even the managers.
There is no chance that any AT&T employee has any advanced information about the iPhone, no matter what he or she says and no matter what he or she has been told. Don’t believe it.
Wecome news indeed.
Maybe they can put a little pizzazz in their doggie iPHONE and include NFC in this later version.
While the world is focused upon the iPHONE, the competition is testing their NFC applications. (NFC is why Microsoft will launch Surface).
Just this week, the first multi-city trial of NFC phones “wireless wallets” was begun with Cellular South by the Apple competition known as KYOCERA.
They are planning a major rollout before the phone from apple is even described. In addition, the KYOCERA technology is generic from a company called SIRIT, so other competitors are also getting ahead of the iPHONE. BENQ just announced plans to work with SIRIT on a new NFC phone this week.
Sorry, but even SJ can’t fake how far behind he is in phones. They should stick with teens and iPODs.
drole.homme:
Sweden plays the 3G game and i think the whole scandinavia does to.
I would love too see a 3G iPhone because GSM sucks so hard i can’t stand it.
what the freakin h.E.Ll
A retail employee? Sorry Phlipper but I don’t consider you’re opinion worthy of any value. Obvsiously an Apply Retail employee isn’t going to know any more about Apple’s plans than the average Apple customer walking down the street.
Don’t flatter yourself because you worked at the local Apple “store.”
Well, even Russia has 3G networks! And I want 3G iPhone, because it is quite embarrassing to surf on EDGE here as I do with my IPhone now.
they are going to make a 3g but not release it until 2008 and it will come in 2 colors
