WiFi Equipped SD Cards
by Vince Veneziani on June 12, 2007

A company called Eye-Fi is looking to bring WiFi-embedded SD cards to your digital camera. Rather than spending a ton of money on a WiFi-enabled digital camera, you’ll be able to purchase an SD card that can go in almost any digital camera and will allow a WiFi connection from multiple devices.

With capacities of up to 2GB, Eye-Fi certainly has a chance of creating a new device the market will jump on. I personally would love to have one of my Casio Exilim cameras WiFi-enabled. Expect to pay $100 for a 2GB model, which is a pretty pricey for an SD card. But remember, you’re getting the joy of WiFi!

  • Brilliant, wish I had thought of it. I can see a laundry list of other products that could follow.

What about security, can anyone within range shuffle through your pictures?

What if the SD card is plugged into something other than a camera, say just a battery. Is it now a portable WiFi accesable “drive” for general purpose use.

  • I’m curious as to how it’s going to work. How do I configure it for various wireless networks? How do I let it know when to upload pictures, and when not to?

  • I’m a professional photographer and having the ability to transmit my images directly to my laptop as I shoot is awesome, but the downside of Eye-Fi is that it can only transfer JPEG images and no self respecting pro shoots anything but RAW images.

This could be a huge product if the Eye-Fi folks would realize the pro to semi pro market is where they would make their money, but until they allow the Wi-Fi transfer of RAW images, it’s just going to be a novelty.
