You are all a bunch of PC idiots! You have grown up with Microsoft "computer type" for so long, you do not know what actual fonts are suppose to look like. Safari on a Windows box does suck, most things on a Windows box suck.

However, Safari at lest gives you a crude hint at what real font rendering (i.e. Mac OS X) is suppose to look like. But, you are all mostly not-artistic and not typography types, or you would already know better!

Re-educate yourselves children by reading this blog:

The problem for Windows users, as I see it, is not necessarily that the rendering in Safari is better or worse, just that it is different. It is hard on the eyes to go back and forth between Safari for Windows and other applications where the rendering is completely different. Apple should give users an option to use Windows font rendering so that users like myself could have consistent text appearance throughout all programs I use. I like Safari for Windows but will not use it as a primary browser unless such an option were to become available.

i think alan and joe need to understand that i agree with most of the folks to say the font rendering is almost exactly the same and is not very important to the average user. by typing in all caps, I was trying to comment on the panic caused by a few folks to whom font rendering is very, very important.

Having a heart attack over a browser rendering helvetica that actually looks like helvetica is a bit much. They are both very legible font renderings, the apple version simply doesn't step in and rework the text the way the windows software does.
If the IE web engine would just render things without having to control them, then alot of our css coding problems and workarounds would go away. But hey, maybe that's outside the scope of this post. Certainly outside the scope of Mr. "WTF IS UP" getting their panties in a bunch over accurate fonts.

Omg...would everyone just calm down. Its font-rendering, not abortion!

The one thing no one realizes is that Apple and Microsoft have competed on two different playing fields. The Windows environment is prolific for developers who sit and stare at code all day while OS X caters to creative professionals of whom require solid screen-to-print accuracy in their print projects. Obviously as time progresses the line begins to blur as each environment is sharing similar strengths in both realms.

Personally I prefer readibility. Who gives a flying hell if a font looks like shit blown up? Considering its mostly creative professionals who often work with type, its pointless to even sit here pissing and moaing about it. So I say use what you prefer. No particular font-rendering engine is better than the other as they served different audiences during their inital development.

Lets see, we are getting a condemnation about fonts from a guy who types in all Caps???

Then he shows one font, from one size, to prove his point that he could only find one size that the font looked worse when blown up? when it actually looks better at the true size?... just to prove the point that he doesn't know about differences between anti-aliasing systems that also care about how a tiny font is printed on the screen and on paper... great...

And then another comment from some other Windows user about having to restart after installing Software that adds plugins to an Operating system???

And then another comment about Firefox having a vast majority of the mac users, when the opposite is true?????

I'm starting to figure out why Windows users are satisfied with the poor copies of everyone else's work for everything they use. They simply live in a enclosed false self perpetuating world.

it is not a surprise that IE7 has the best rendering, it got the best rendering engine, one that was developed by MS, and just for anyone to make a test, grab your laptop and read feeds or your favorite websites while in the sun with firefox, and then change to IE7, you will note how good it actually is.

I agree with Mark. Safari pretty much blows as a browser on either OS. The interface is so plain that it actually can inhibit usability. The functionality that is being advertising on the download page is almost entirely been integrated into the other browser offerings for years. Firefox/Flock/Opera are all much better in usability, design and functionality. Although, the WebKit rendering engine is one of the best. Adobe's Apollo (AIR) also uses WebKit. I believe some of the Linux browsers use it as well.

One other thing...this is a regular knock on Windows by Apple/fans so I was very surprised when it happened yesterday on my Mac. I installed Safari 3 Beta and a dialog opened that required a full system restart to complete. Wha??

As to font rendering, as much as I hate to say this...on Windows, IE7 has the best font rendering...even over Firefox. I guess they got one thing right. Now I need to go wash out my mouth with soap.

But it's an Apple product, if you think there is something the wrong with it then the problem is you.

You should report to the Apple "Peoples re-education center" immediatly.
